Concepts on the Choice of Access Points 1. Main entry (a.k.a. primary access point) • Author (most cases) • Title • Corporate body

Authorship • Personal author – the person chiefly responsible for the creation of the intellectual or artistic content of a work. • Corporate body – an organization or group of persons that is identified by a particular name and that acts, or may act, as an entity. • Examples: associations, institutions, business firms, governments, government agencies, religious bodies

Works for which a single person or corporate body is responsible Works of unknown or uncertain authorship or by unnamed groups Works of shared responsibility (e.g., two or more authors) Collections and works produced under editorial direction Works of mixed responsibility (e.g., author and editor)

Main entry under Title Works that do not fall into the categories of works that require main entry under a person or corporate body are entered under the title (21.1C). 1. The personal authorship is unknown, uncertain, diffuse (i.e., authorship being shared among four or more persons without indication of principal responsibility), or cannot be determined, and the work does not emanate from a corporate body 2. It is a collection or a work produced under editorial direction that has a collective title

It emanates from a corporate body but does not fall into any of the categories listed under rule 21.1B2 (i.e., entry under corporate body) and is not of personal authorship It is accepted as sacred scripture by a religious group

Added entries under Personal Names • Made for the following: • Collaborators (up to three) • If there are four or more collaborators, added entry is made for the first named only

Added entries under Corporate Bodies • Prominently named in the work unless it functions solely as distributor or manufacturer • If four or more corporate bodies are involved in a particular work, an added entry is made under the first named only

Added entries under Titles • It has not been used as a main entry • The title added entry is so similar as to duplicate the main entry heading or a reference to the main entry heading • Any other title (e.g., cover title, caption title, etc.) that differs significantly from the title proper

Added entries under Series • Make an added entry under the heading for a series for each separately catalogued work in the series if it provides a useful collocation, except if: • The items in the series are related to each other only by common physical characteristics • The numbering suggests that the parts have been numbered primarily for stock control or to benefit from lower postage rates

• If in doubt, make a series added entry

Indentions for the preparation of catalog cards • Paragraph indention: • Main entry under personal name • Main entry under corporate body

• Hanging indention: • Main entry under title

Choice of Name • In general, choose the name by which a person is commonly known (22.1A). • If a person is known by more than one name (other than a pseudonym) choose the name by which the person is clearly most commonly known, if there’s one (22.2A1). • If all the works by one person appear under one pseudonym, choose the pseudonym (22.2B1).
