So what is a port anyway? Just like an airport is a place for planes to land, load, and unload travelers, the Port of Long Beach is a place where ships come to dock, and pick up or drop off their cargo: things like sneakers, clothes, electronics, cars, fruits and vegetables, computers, toys, and televisions. When cargo comes into the United States, it’s called an “import” and when something made here gets shipped to another country, it’s called an “export.” Cargo is transported using large metal boxes called “containers.” These containers are moved on or off ships using giant cranes. The cranes also move containers onto trains and trucks that will transport their cargo across the United States. Let’s learn some more about the people and things that make up the Port of Long Beach...

Maze Craze See if you can make it through the color maze! Jump from one container to the next following this pattern: Red, Orange,

then repeat! You can move up, down, left or right, but not diagonal!
Starboard Solution On a ship, things have different names than they do on land. A kitchen is called a galley, the floor is called the deck, and walls are bulkheads. Another difference is instead of saying left and right, they say port and starboard. When you are facing the same way as a ship is heading, port is on the left, and starboard is on the right. All ships have a green light on their starboard side, and a red light on their port side. This makes it easy for a captain to tell what direction another ship is heading from far away, or when it’s dark out.

Port pilots help ship captains navigate their ships through the port. It’s tricky sailing even for experienced captains, so they need port pilots to help. Team Green!
The Port of Long Beach is one of the greenest ports around! The port does its part by making good choices about what’s best for the earth and for all the critters that you’ve seen in this book who make the port harbor their home. You can help out too by choosing which of these statements is a good environmental choice. Positive choices get awarded green flags (just like how the Port of Long Beach gives green flags to ships that reduce their air pollution) so color the box next to the good choice green.
1. Contribute to the protection of the Bolsa Chica wetlands
2. Use air monitoring stations to check on the air quality
3. Make sure all trucks leave their engines running at the port
4. Discipline ships that blow out too much smoke
5. Throw trash into the ocean, where an animal might eat it
6. Offer a reward to ships that switch to cleaner fuels
