The Written Language Written language refers to a language that is written down and used for recording events, ideas and feelings (Wollacott M, 2023). In a teaching context, the written language allows students to reference and analyze what they have written so that they can develop their skills in both the spoken and written language.

Characteristics of the Written Language

3

Permanence When a student sets their mind to think writing is permanent.

Permanence When students write something they already set in their mind that they must finish in one session (Ligsanan L, 2018). It is important to highlight the advantages of written language to students and how it can serve as a guide for them to write their thoughts and that they can edit their writing, therefore their thoughts later down the line. 5

Processing Time When a students only think about the deadline not the content

Processing Time This part is very important. Often, students are stuck focusing on finishing their work by the end of the class and aren’t paying attention to what they’re writing. If we don’t pay attention to this, students won’t be able to use critical thinking and really understand what it is they are writing. A focus on pushing them towards reflecting on what they are writing is crucial. Characteristics of the Written Language

7

Distance Knowing your Audience

Distance This means the gap of knowledge between the students and the content they are writing/reading. It is important to analyze and adjust the content that they are writing towards things that is on their intellectual level while letting them develop into more complex words, contexts, phrases and sentences. Orthography Structure in Writing

Orthography Learning to write effectively is key for learning and participation in social communities. In English, transcription skills (handwriting and spelling) constrain written production at the early stages of learning to write (Llaurado A, 2020). In its most basic form, orthography is what allows our students to be able to communicate their thoughts and put it in to writing. As teachers we must help them develop the skills of proper form and of how to utilize these writing techniques to communicate effectively. Characteristics of the Written Language

Complexity Structure in our Sentences

Complexity Written language is grammatically more complex than spoken language. It has more subordinate clauses, more "that/to" complement clauses, more long sequences of prepositional phrases, more attributive adjectives and more passives than spoken language (Llaurado A, 2020). This means that students are expected to be more formal with their writing, to be encouraged to use more complex sentences and to remove any redundancies in their writing, and to add grammatical variety in their sentence structure. Vocabulary Adding Richness to Our Writing

Vocabulary Vocabulary refers to the words we use to communicate effectively. It plays an important part in learning to read. Students must use the words they hear orally to make sense of the words they see in print and vice versa. This allows students to enrich their vocabulary by learning new meanings of words as well as how they can use those words in different contexts. Characteristics of the Written Language

15

Formality Academic Consistency

Formality Writing in a formal style is important when composing formal documents (e.g., a Formal Report). This style of writing may require additional effort for students because it is different from the communication they tend to use on a day-to-day basis. Formality in writing allows us as teachers to give students a structure in which they can write their thoughts and to be able to convey them in a standardized form. Summary In conclusion, the different characteristics of the written English language allow us to have a basis on what we should be focusing and how to adjust it depending on the needs of our students. That way we can steer them on the right path as they develop their skills in their English writing and in turn, develop more of their spoken English.
