“What is the role of the doctor as a professional in today’s world?”

An Essay by Christine Beatrix Yson Manalo

Change, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is defined as the act or process through which something becomes different. Many influential people regard change as being the only constant thing in this evermetamorphosing world and, in many ways, it is true. Hues of black and gray have shifted their course through the centuries, painting the world with more colors and dazzling lights. Our race  begins to t o evolve, greedily fulfilling their unsatiated and ever-changing e ver-changing desires as they scour the earth and peer at every corner the light is able to shine upon. We found it difficult to look for information by leafing through every single reference material, so we made it so that we ca n have all that with just the tap of a finger. We find it hard to keep long d istance relationships relationships with friends we wish to keep close, therefore the social media has been given purpose, not only to keep connections with ones we already had but, a lso to make new ones with people whom w hom we have not crossed paths with before. The human race’s fight for survival is never -ending. -ending. To continue to fight, change is inevitable. But for every war to prepare for, one must always employ a healer. This, my friend, is the role of the professional doctor in this tremendously brutal society. If we take a close look at the scope of the medical field then and now, it is obvious to see how people’s ideas and innovations affect how ever ything ything works. We used to blame everything on the supernatural and the unknown, unknow n, kill thousands of innocent lives all because somebody from a higher ground pointed a finger. It only took a few people to convince people that they were just  pinning the blame on something entirely irrelevant.

Take a few more creative people and you create the microscope and discover the blood groups. You take a group of people to cut up a few limbs and you will soon discover the wonders of anatomical pathology and surgical procedures. It only took an accident to discover antibiotics. With a few more innovations, automated body fluid analyzers, imaging techniques, sero -diagnostic test kits, prosthetic limbs, and other kinds of technology have been invented in order to keep up with the demands of the increasing number of patients and to improve their quality of life. The  plague, once incurable, can now be cured. Even with all this however, the fight still continues. Not all information explained in all those textbooks can be fully encoded and literated into words for scholars to be able to understand. Sometimes, the reverse may occur, with the illustrations being only a gist of what reality has to give. Doctors have yet to get the mechanism that t hese diseases take. 『  How are these two factors related to this condition? Is it possible that this could have caused this kind of reaction in our body? Is it possible that a cure could be made based on this principle? Are there possibly more of these things? Where did they come  from?

Rosenbaum has once said that “There is no such thing as an infallible doctor.” They, too, are humans. They can answer only so much questions at a time. With each new cure, there is a new disease arising. The problems arising back then were thought to be caused by inappropriate or immoral behavior and can now be concluded to be caused by a microscopic organism taking over our bodies. Microorganisms, however, can bec ome resistant to our every advance, genetically morphing into stronger and far more potent weapons of mass epidemics. Nowadays, we are not only dealing with physiologic conditions but, as well as mental and emotional diseases, making

them out to be just as harsh as being possessed by a demon w ho has somehow in some way, slipped into you and imprisoned you from the inside out. There is no such thing as a doctor who knows everything. It is the reason why they are called “medical practitioners.”  To answer the mind boggling questions that the world has yet to understand about the human body, theyresearch. They look around and observe, they make hypothetical guesses, and test out that knowledge before they give their final conclusion. The capabilities of research are boundless but we can advance only so far without having to put so many at risk. It is literally no joke when the life of the human race is in their hands. It is  because they know this that they meticulously try their earnest to accurately and properly treat you to the best of their abilities. The role of the doctor until now has always been t he same: to prevent disease and prolong life. They provide the correct diagnosis and treatment in order for a patient to be able to fully recover and continue to contribute to the community to their fullest potential. If no one else were to do it, then who ever will? Who else would be brave enough to take on the responsibility that is the human body and soul? In this ever-changing society, this oh so dazzling world can only continue to live and forever travel towards their future with these sorcerers and conjurers crafting the bridge leading to it.
