Transaction Processing (TP) Systems process data generated by day-to-day business operations. TP systems perform a series of tasks whenever a specific transaction occurs. Examples of TP systems include customer order processing, accounts receivable, warranty claim processing. New Century would benefit from TP systems because it’s efficient. The TP systems process a set of transaction-related commands as a group rather than individually. Another benefit of New Century would be to protect integrity. TP systems ensure that if a single element of a transaction fails, the system does not process the rest of the transaction. New Century might use a transaction processing system for appointment processing; it’s most critical day-to-day business operation. Business Support Systems provide job-related information support to users at all levels of a company. These systems can analyze transactional data, generate information needed to manage and control business processes, and provide information that leads to better decision-making. Information systems produce valuable information from computers. New Century Employees need information to perform their jobs and they can rely on information systems for that support. Business Support systems can work hand in hand with a TP system. Example – Merchandise sales to customer, a TP system records the sale, updates the customer’s balance, and makes a deduction from the inventory. Business Support system highlights slow- or fast-moving items, customers with past due balances, and inventory levels that need adjustment. In order for New Century to compete effectively in their market; they must collect production, sales, and shipping data and update the company-wide business support system immediately. New Century might consider a business support system for its patient records that will provide information support for users having to deal with patients. User Productivity Systems are technological systems that increase employee productivity. Examples of User Productivity Systems include e-mail, voice mail, fax, video and Web conferencing, word processing, automated calendars, database management, spreadsheets, desktop publishing, presentation graphics, company intranets, and high-speed Internet access. New Century Company improves productivity by providing their employees with this technology. For a user productivity system, New Century might consider a database management system that will help all employees’ access patient records faster and more accurately.
4. Business-to-business (B2B) describes commerce transactions between businesses, such as between a manufacturer and a wholesaler, or between a wholesaler and a retailer. Electronic commerce between two companies used a data sharing arrangement called electronic data interchange (EDI). New Century’s benefit of using B2B is to improve efficiency and reduce costs. New Century might consider EDI for its claims and payment transactions with insurance companies, vertical system packages for business processes specific to New Century, and horizontal system packages for business processes common to most businesses such as inventory, accounting, and supplies ordering.
