Centrifuge 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH – 1 Safety precautions Please read carefully before opening the device! The centrifuge must not be operated in a hazardous or flammable environment and must not be used to centrifuge explosive or highly reactive substances.

When handling toxic or radioactive liquids or pathogenic bacteria from Risk Group II (see World Health Organization: "Laboratory Biosafety Manual"), we recommend the use of aerosol-tight capsules.

• •

The centrifuge must be thoroughly cleaned when liquids have been spilled in the rotor or rotor chamber.

• •

The rotor must be loaded symmetrically. Opposing tubes should be of the same type and should be filled equally.

• •

Please only use original accessories recommended by Eppendorf.

Eppendorf does not honor any warranty or accept any responsibility for damage resulting from the use of parts from other manufacturers or improper repair work.

• • •

All servicing is performed at the technician’s own risk!

The service manual is only suitable for repair and maintenance work if you use the latest version and if an appropriate training course has been attended at Eppendorf.

The rotor and rotor lid must always be securely fastened. Do not begin centrifugation before the rotor has been securely fastened!

Before plugging in the centrifuge, compare your power supply with the electrical requirements listed on the identification plate.

Using spare parts and accessories which Eppendorf has not recommended can reduce the precision, accuracy and life of the device.

Disconnect the power supply before opening the device! In order to carry out maintenance or repairs on Eppendorf products, it is necessary to attend an Eppendorf training course on the device.

Centrifuge 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH – 3 Error lists / Troubleshooting Error list Note:

R = Response of centrifuge when the error is reported.

Display: Cause and response of centrifuge. The consecutive number (cause of error) provides for more detailed localization of the error. It can be read from service program 8 (5702) or service program 9 (5702 R / 5702 RH).

Reset After power-off the display shows "OFF". The time before the display is cleared depends on the operational status (centrifuge accelerating, braking or stopped). All operational states can only be reset if the "OFF" display is cleared between power-off and power-on ! Only then does the controller perform a reset.

Error list Note:

The error display shows Er 3, 4, etc. Er 3-0, 3-1 only appears when the "speed" dial is held down for six seconds and then turned clockwise/counterclockwise.

5702: Disassemble the base plate with the motor or remove the rear wall of the centrifuge.

5702 R (up to serial no. 3120): Alignment is possible from the underside of the device, remove both of the screws for the microswitch, see Chapter 4, Disassembly / Assembly.

Aligning microswitch: The microswitch with its platen must always be positioned against the motor. The microswitch should be adjusted in such a way that the microswitch switches in the case of a motor imbalance of 2 – 3 mm. Adjust with the two visible screws on the underside of the device. Carry out an imbalance inspection, see Ch. 10.

5702 R (as of serial no. 3121):

5702 RH:

Align microswitch: The microswitch can be adjusted with an adjustment screw in the base plate, which is accessible from the left side of the device. Remove the collection tray and unscrew the clamping screw (1). Adjust the microswitch with the adjustment screw (2) in such a way that the microswitch is activated in the case of an imbalance of 2 – 3 mm. The actuator of the microswitch with its platen must always be positioned against the motor. Screw the clamping screw (1) tight. Insert collection tray and carry out an imbalance test, see Chapter 10 "Setting imbalance" or SE 12, Chapter 3, checking without accessing cooling unit.

Centrifuge 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH – 11 Descriptions General layout The centrifuge 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH comprises the following main electronic assemblies:

Control PCB with LCD and control elements, central control unit, frequency converter interface, lid latch control, imbalance recognition Temperature control (only with 5702 R / 5702 RH)

Converter assembly with integrated rotational speed recording and actuation of a 3-phase asynchronous motor and electronic brake regulation with external braking resistor (only with 5702 R)

3-phase asynchronous motor with integrated Hall sensor for rotational speed recording and motor-temperature switch

Functional description of assemblies Voltage supply

11 Descriptions

The voltage is supplied via a mains input module with integrated mains power fuses [230 V version: 2x 2.5 A time-lag (phase and zero)]. [100/120 V version: 2x 5.0 A time-lag (phase and zero)]. A two-pole mains power switch is used for power isolation.

PCB Control The power to the PCB is supplied by the mains power supply unit on the converter board via connector X1. The stabilized 5 V voltage supplies the logic assemblies. The power to the lid motor control is provided by a 15 V voltage supply. The 5 V voltage is monitored by IC4, which triggers a RESET signal for the processor if the voltage falls below the permissible minimum. The functions of this assembly are: –

Input and output of all device running parameters

Monitoring of all device running parameters

Communication with the converter

Lid latch The lid is locked by catches moved by a geared motor. If the current consumption increases above a permissible level, such as in the event of a blockage, the motor is shut down. The acknowledge signals of a microswitch and a Reed contact are used to evaluate the lock/unlocked status of the lid. The Reed contact is triggered if the lid is properly closed. The microswitch trips if the catches are correctly engaged. The switches are connected via X2 to the Control PCB.

Centrifuge 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH – 11 Descriptions Converter communication Data is exchanged between the converter board and Control PCB, based on the RS232 interface. An agreed data protocol is applied to transmit the rotational speed, acceleration and braking ramps, start/stop functions and others.

Display The operating parameters are displayed by way of a custom LCD panel. Current running parameters are stored in an EEPROM. Communication over a bus system is based on a standardized data protocol. The current running parameters are retained when the centrifuge is switched off.

Converter assembly This assembly forms the central core of the centrifuge, because it accommodates the drive of the 3-phase asynchronous motor and the voltage supply to all assemblies. This PCB comprises the following main assemblies: - Mains power input unit with PFC - Switched power supply unit for voltage supply to the control assemblies - Power supply unit for the motor drive - Processor control with interface to the Control PCB

11 Descriptions

Rotational speed recording and regulation assembly An assembly with a Hall-IC, mounted on the underside of the motor, is used to record the rotational speed. For this, a permanent magnet is attached to the motor shaft which generates an alternating magnetic field at the Hall sensor when rotation occurs. The resultant pulse sequence is used to record and regulate the rotational speed in the converter assembly.

Imbalance recognition assembly The imbalance recognition function is implemented mechanically by means of a normally closed momentary contact switch. The switch is mounted on the ground plate of the centrifuge. In case of an imbalance, the momentary contact switch opens and a high signal is connected to the processor (P3.7). At the same time the LH edge of the monoflop (IC8) is evaluated and converted into a pulse (t > 10ms) which is likewise connected to the processor (P1.2).

Temperature control (only with 5702 R / 5702 RH) The temperature is measured in the rotor chamber (chamber temperature) and on the condenser (condenser temperature). The measuring is done by two NTC resistors. Their resistance in series is measured as variable voltage and is converted by the ADC of the microcontroller. The NTC resistors are connected to the Control PCB via X3.

Chamber temperature The NTC resistor is mounted in a molded sleeve at the bottom of the rotor chamber.

Condenser temperature Another NTC resistor is mounted on a pipe of the condenser. The temperature measured is used to optimize the cooling, to monitor the temperature of the condenser as well as to control the speed of the condenser fan.

Controlling the condenser fan (only with 5702 R / 5702 RH) The condenser fan is driven by a phase-angle control. This allows adjustment of the speed according to the condenser temperature.

Centrifuge 5702 / 5702 R / 5702 RH – 11 Descriptions Heating function (only 5702 RH) Two heating cables are irremovably mounted around the rotor chamber. The power for the function is supplied by the PCB converter module. With 120 volt devices, both of the heating cables are operated parallel. With 230 volt devices they are operated in series. The resistance of each of the heating cables id approx. 160 Ohm and is measurable with an external measuring device. A temperature sensor has also been integrated for the software control system and is not exchangeable. Another non-exchangeable temperature monitor is mounted on the rotor chamber for safety purposes. The temperature sensor of the rotor chamber and the condenser sensor of the cooling unit continue to be exchangeable for the Centrifuge 5702 RH.
