Network Flexibility

In a playing field where “the pipe” is almost never big enough, carrier-grade solutions from Celtro are designed to keep mobile operators one step ahead of capacity demands – uncorking existing backhaul bottlenecks, and ensuring that new bottlenecks don’t emerge. Celtro solutions both optimize and aggregate traffic, allowing more traffic to flow more freely over existing infrastructure.

Successfully installed in mobile networks worldwide, solutions from Celtro excel at keeping network overhead in check. Celtro backhaul switching technologies eliminate the need for massive network CapEx – squeezing more capacity from existing infrastructure, while actually lowering management costs.

Advanced broadband services are today’s revenue generators – and providing these while maintaining profitability is the key to survival in a competitive environment. More data-rich services means higher peak rates – but, with Celtro, not necessarily more backhaul infrastructure. Celtro enables subscribers to enjoy the broadband services they crave, while operators keep margins in the black.

For any backhaul network, over any bearer, Celtro’s all-in-one-box solutions were developed with a thorough understanding of the issues facing provider backhaul networks today – and are equally prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.

The Scenario

Celtro’s Solution

A mobile provider with access to a new Metro Ethernet or IP/MPLS aggregation network was looking to run mixed legacy 2G (TDM) and 3G (ATM) RAN transport over the new fixed line aggregation network.

Leveraging Celtro’s all-in-one-box DynaMate backhaul switch, a three-step solution was proposed. First, 2G and 3G traffic was converged, using Celtro’s unique Optimal Convergence technology. Next, a unified MPLS or Carrier Ethernet traffic flow (LSP/VLAN) was created. Then, appropriate QoS, OAM and TE mechanisms were put in place to assure high availability, reliability and service differentiation.

A mobile operator with a mixed 2G (TDM), 3G (ATM) RAN and a legacy backhaul network (TDM, SDH/PDH, ATM) was looking to migrate the backhaul to a Packet Switched Network (Metro Ethernet/ IP/MPLS).

Choosing Celtro’s all-in-one-box DynaMate backhaul switching solutions enabled the mobile operator to fully leverage existing legacy infrastructure. First, 2G and 3G traffic was converged, using Celtro’s unique Optimal Convergence technology. Next, different traffic streams (TDM and ATM with Ethernet) were emulated into a unified, converged MPLS flow. Finally, ML-PPP was added to allow Ethernet/ MPLS flows over multiple PDH links or Packet over SDH (PoS) for similar results in STM-1 links, using appropriate QoS, OAM and TE mechanisms to assure high availability, reliability and service differentiation.

2G/3G Convergence

The Scenario

Celtro’s Solution

The Scenario

Celtro’s Solution

A UMTS operator with limited network infrastructure needed to rollout high speed HSPA services, while avoiding excessive backhaul expenses.

Celtro DynaMate enables the design of a hybrid backhaul architecture wherein data services are offloaded onto “best effort” data transport solutions based on access (IP DSLAM) and aggregation (Metro Ethernet) networks. Celtro’s solution allows use of multiple and different DSL interfaces (e.g. ADSL2+ combined with SHDSL.Bis) with Celtro’s unique Virtual Bonding TM technology. At the same time, delay-sensitive 2G and 3G/R99 traffic is optimally converged and can be delivered with HSPA data or autonomously over the existing backhaul infrastructure.

A mobile operator with a 2G (TDM) network was rolling out a 3G (ATM) RAN.

Celtro’s DynaMate family of mobile backhaul switching products supports 2G Abis and Ater interfaces and the 3G Iub interface, converging 2G and 3G backhaul traffic over standard ATM or IP/MPLS based networks. This improves network efficiency, enables dynamic sharing of backhaul resources, and paves the way for smooth 3G services rollout – maximizing both flexibility and service delivery, while minimizing costs.

The Challenge Operators rolling out HSPA+ face dramatic increases in backhaul network bandwidth requirements, which generally increase even more post-rollout. The operator was seeking alternative and cost-effective backhaul technologies to help maintain reasonable backhaul CapEx and OpEx.

Node B BTS

IP/MPLS

Node B BTS Node B

BTS

The Challenge The operator needed to rollout a 3G network, introducing new data-rich services. However, these new services would dramatically increase end-user bandwidth demands – placing a strain on the backhaul network, and raising both CapEx and OpEx. In order to reduce network costs, the operator was looking to transport both types of traffic on a unified network, over existing infrastructure.

The Scenario

Celtro’s Solution

The Scenario

Celtro’s Solution

A 2G mobile operator wanted to provide data services with WiMAX (802.11e), using the backhaul network to transport these services from BTS to BSC/ASN-GW.

A four-step solution was proposed, leveraging Celtro’s all-in-one-box DynaMate mobile backhaul switch. First, different traffic in each stream was converged and optimized, removing redundant and idle elements in each stream. Then, different traffic streams (TDM with Ethernet) were emulated into a unified, converged MPLS flow. Next, traffic management mechanisms were applied to achieve the desired QoS, using OAM functionality to assure network availability and manageability. Finally, adequate synchronization was added, meeting the requirements of both networks (GSM and WiMAX).

A GSM operator with limited network infrastructure needed to expand service capability to include mobile broadband and other data – intensive services, in order to better compete in a crowded market.

All-in-one-box DynaMate products from Celtro enhance mobile backhaul network performance in 2G networks. The DynaMate family of mobile access switches aggregates and optimizes 2G backhaul traffic - grooming 2G TDM traffic at the 64Kbps level, and optimizing groomed traffic with gains of up to 3:1 for Abis traffic and up to 2:1 for Ater traffic.

The Challenge The provider was seeking to unify transmission over the same backhaul network, converging TDM (2G) and Ethernet (WiMAX) into a unified traffic flow (MPLS) with differentiated QoS (E-LSP) and proper synchronization.

The Challenge Lack of available backhaul infrastructure and the high cost of adding new capacity was holding back the operator’s rollout of new mobile services and network expansion – negatively impacting both revenue growth and subscriber satisfaction.

Advanced HSPA+ Offload Solution Celtro’s revolutionary Virtual Bonding™ technology enables mobile operators, for the first time, to bond different transport links into one single logical pipe – maximizing peak rate delivery, improving service delivery, and enhancing overall user experience. Virtual Bonding makes it possible to bond together different transport links, over different infrastructure technologies, into one logical backhaul pipe that transmits HSPA traffic. With Virtual Bonding, any combination of existing links – ADSL2+ (ATM), VDSL2 (EFM), SHDSL, or traditional E1s - can form a single high-capacity connection. This logical pipe’s peak rate is equal to the accumulated peak rates of the individual links, and the load-balancing function assures high service delivery reliability.

Celtro’s application-aware traffic classification is based on unique application-layer switching technology that enables delivery of voice E1 PW and video services over HSPA. By providing application-aware traffic classification and marking at the network edge, Celtro DynaMate mobile backhaul switches essentially upgrade the entire backhaul network to an application-aware backhaul network, including service delivery that prioritizes traffic based on the user application (voice,Svideo, PA or data).

Celtro’s innovative mobile backhaul switches identify and classify each HSPA user session in the Iu-PS, determining the application and service being used (mobile TV, web-browsing, file download, peer-to-peer, VoIP, etc). The switch then maps the identified applications or sessions to a standard Layer 2 ATM or IP/ MPLS traffic flow with appropriate QoS, enabling application-aware prioritization throughout the backhaul network.

Celtro Backhaul Optimization Solutions

Optimal Convergence Celtro’s innovative DynaMate mobile backhaul switches provide optimal convergence of 2G, 3G, HSPA and WiMAX traffic to maximize backhaul network efficiency and flexibility, improve service delivery and reduce network expenses. Celtro’s unique Optimal Convergence starts with optimization of all traffic types by eliminating idle and redundant parts, leaving only the actual information as a variable bit rate flow. The flows of actual information are then packetized into ATM or IP to match the backhaul aggregation technology. All 2G, 3G, HSPA and WiMAX service flows are statistically multiplexed to maximize statistical gain and dynamically share the backhaul resources based on QoS prioritization.

2G backhaul optimization

Raises network efficiency and capacity through traffic optimization and statistical gain for both 2G and 3G/HSPA
