News We are happy to present a new catalogue of Motordetal. It became better, easier, more practical. The catalogue covers all our products, including well-known and brand-new ones. Before you open it, we would like to share some stories about our accomplishments for the last year with you.
Developments and accomplishments
IMPORT SUBSTITUTION Programme Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko visited the Motordetal plant during her business trip. This visit became the next step to participate in a new investment project under the Import Substitution Programme in Russia. Valentina Matviyenko believes that Motordetal is one of the "top" companies with excellent prospects, which must be supported at the federal level.
New
EQUIPMENT The piston and piston ring production area has been equipped with new state-of-the-art machines: Takisawa, Goetze, Ergo, Kolbenschmidt. For this reason we have increased the production volume and what is more important - we have reached a new quality level.
ERGO - 4 Casting machine For further development, the production capacity increase and a new level achievement we have implemented a new robotized casting machine - ERGO-4. Its primary goal is manufacturing of H4M pistons for Renault-Nissan Alliance.
Construction of
NEW PRODUCTION AREA As a part of the Import Substitution Programme we have started a construction of a new production area for the cylinder liner production. Taking into account new capacities, the liner production volume will be increased up to 7 440 000 finished parts per year.

RENAULT - NISSAN Engines In 2014 we became a supplier of pistons used in K4M engines (1,6 16 valves) and HR15DE/H4M for Renault-Nissan Alliance. The engines are installed in such cars as Renault Logan, Renault Laguna, Renault Duster, Nissan Tiida, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Juke, etc.
YAMZ OEM A long and fruitful cooperation with Yaroslavl Motor Plant (YAMZ) took a new step forward. In 2014 YAMZ stopped in-house production of automotive components and Motordetal became the only supplier of kit-sets for YAMZ.

ROLLS-ROYCE In June 2015 Motordetal became the best supplier of RollsRoyce Power Systems AG (MTU), having won the "A" Supplier award yet again.
ISO TS 16949 Certificates The Motordetal company has passed the DQS audit. The audit has confirmed that the company meets all requirements under ISO/TS 16949, specifying the highest quality system management requirements for automotive plants. The audit included sample testing, product approval process check, measuring system analysis, laboratory requirements check, etc.

Developments and accomplishments
Kit-sets for
YAMZ 5340 engine A successful cooperation with Yaroslavl Motor Plant has led to development - start of kit-set production for YAMZ 5340 engine, which is used as a powertrain in trucks, dumpers, tractor units with axle configuration of 4x2, 4x4, 6x2, 6x4.
Improvement of
ALLOYS Motordetal pays particular attention to improvement of the alloys. More than 17 types of alloys are used in the production. AlSi21Cu3Ni1 is one of the examples. Due to a higher percentage of copper and nickel it differs in increased strength and thermal conductivity. A low thermal expansion coefficient allows the clearance reduction between the piston and the cylinder.
ncMDChrome® Coating The research centre of the plant has developed and implemented a new innovation coating for the piston ring production - Nanochrome (ncMDChrome). This new coating extends service life of the piston rings by 20%, compared to a standard chrome plating.
NANOFRIKS New antifriction coating For the piston service life extension we have implemented a new antifriction coating, called NanofriKS, successfully used by VW, BMW, DAF and others. NANOFRIKS have replaced Molykote and Molydaq coatings that we used before. The new coating allowed us to reduce friction and wear by more than 50%, compared to standard industrial coatings.

PHOSPHATING Process In summer 2014 we phosphated a piston for the first time. A phosphate film consisting of minute crystals and chemically bounded to the metal allowed us to reduce a coefficient of friction (-30%), improve oil-adsorption (3-4 times more), corrosionresistance (more than 10 times) and thermal resistance (stability up to +500°С) of the piston surface.
ANODIZING Process The anodizing process is used in "Black edition" piston production. The top compression ring groove is anodized. As a result we managed to increase hardness 3 times and double the material wear-resistance. It allowed us to extend the piston service life.
BLACK EDITION Kit set In summer 2014 a new kit set for Russian cars "Black edition" appeared in stores. The main advantage of using the kit set is the engine service life extention by 50% due to the piston phosphating and top compression ring groove anodizing.
New
PACKAGE For development and brand support of the company as one of the leaders of the automotive production, we have designed and implemented a new two-colour brand package of Motordetal. By tradition, the main colours are blue and white.

Developments and accomplishments
RENAULT - NISSAN Pistons After we started to supply the pistons to Renault-Nissan Alliance, we released similar products to aftermarket. Now the pistons for K4M (1,6l 16v) and HR16DE/H4M engines are available. The engines are installed in Renault cars such as Renault Logan, Renault Sandero, Renault Duster, Renault Fluence, etc., Nissan cars such as Nissan Note, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Juke, etc., Landa Largus and Lada Vesta.
CYLINDER LINER Casting For foreign engine repair we produce a cylinder liner casting with 24 different sizes. The casting serves for the cylinder block recovery when the finished or semi-finished cylinder liner is missing.

VOLKSWAGEN AND FORD ENGINES On the 15th of June 2015 we released new piston kit sets for Volkswagen engines (CFNB, CFNA, CLSA, starting from 2010 production year) and some Ford engines (HWDA, HWDB, HXDA, HXDB) to aftermarket.
Cylinder liners for
FOREIGN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES At the beginning of 2014 the company management decided to start sales of the cylinder liners for foreign commercial vehicles in Russia. It should be noted that such products are exported for more than 15 years.

Production of kit sets for
VAZ-21126 and VAZ-11194 ENGINES In response to the growing demand for spare parts of popular Russian VAZ cars (Priora and Kalina), the company management decided to start production of kit sets for VAZ21126 and VAZ-11194 engines.
New kit sets for
YAMZ At the beginning of 2015 Motordetal manufactured new kit sets for YAMZ-8401, -850, -847, TMZ-8437.10, 8486.10 engines and their modifications installed in the special purpose vehicles. The main benefits are phosphating of the surface and the cooling gallery in the piston.
The second oversize for
ZMZ and UMZ engines In response to the growing demand of small and mediumsized enterprises, we have started sales of the second oversize for ZMZ and UMZ engines, installed in the engines of commercial vehicles. Due to increase of the diameter for 1 mm, the owners of the vehicles do not need boring and linering of the cylinder block.
New applicability of kit sets for
KAMAZ ENGINES For product quality improvement we upgraded a manufacturing process of the cylinder linders for KAMAZ engines and changed the surface treatment process. Since June cylinder liners 740.30-1002021,740.51-1002021, 740.13-1002021 are produced using phosphating.

1. Pistons
The pistons of the Motordetal company are manufactured with a diameter range from 76 mm to 150 mm for engines used in Russian and foreign passenger cars and commercial vehicles, tractors and combines, buses and special purpose equipment.
The pistons are produced with state-of-the-art equipment: Takisawa, GFS, Otto Harrandt, etc., which provides dimensional stability and geometric accuracy of the parts. Each product passes through a multilevel quality control: from alloy composition to geometric parameters. The Motordetal pistons have earned their favorable reputation and have been selected by many carmakers and customers.

This piston weighs less than the other pistons and for this reason it is more preferable when choosing the piston shape.
The special insert ensures dimensional and geometric stability of the piston when heating (allows the clearance reduction between the piston and the cylinder which leads to the engine noise minimization).

Initially it was intended for high-forced diesel engines. Nowadays it is used also in supercharged gasoline engines. The piston design ensures the most effective piston crown cooling.

1.4. The Motordetal piston production • All the pistons are produced using the mold casting method which ensures the material structure of high quality. Impurities are removed and mechanical properties of metal are distributed uniformly across the entire part. • For the piston production we use aluminium alloys with various alloying elements. It is necessary to ensure the required properties of each piston type.

For continuous and failure-free production of the Motordetal pistons we use multicomponent aluminium-silicon alloys (silumins): AlSi18, AlSi13Cu5MgNi2, AlSi21Cu3Ni1, AlSi12CuMgNi (AL30), AlSi13Cu3MgNi2 - 5 alloys, mixed with chromium, magnesium, copper, nickel and other elements. It should be noted that many manufacturers use AlSi8, AlSi9, etc., (the number in the name of the alloy means a percentage of silicon) silumins as a basic alloy. The Motordetal pistons are manufactured with the alloys of high quality. The basic alloy is AlSi12CuMgNi (Al30), containing 12% of silicon. The table of the alloys used for production at Motordetal

The basic alloy. AlSi12CuMgNi (AL30) has a composition of such optimum properties as wearresistance, high temperature strength, high thermal conductivity.
AlSi13Cu3MgNi2
The alloy has similar properties as AlSi12CuMgNi (AL30) but differs in a high percentage of copper and nickel. The piston made of this kind of alloys is stronger, more heat-resistant, burn-throughresistant and thermal conductive.
AlSi13Cu5MgNi2
This alloy is the strongest among the alloys of this type. The alloy has simillar properties as AlSi12CuMgNi (AL30), but differs in a higher percentage of copper. Due to this the pistons made of this alloy are super strong.
AlSi18
The basic hypereutectic alloy. It is heat-resistant and has high hardness. Due to its wear-resistance it is optimal for production of truck and tractor diesel engines. It has a low thermal expansion coefficient.
AlSi21Cu3Ni1
This alloy has all properties of AlSi18 alloy. Due to a higher percentage of copper and nickel it differs in increased strength and thermal conductivity. A low thermal expansion coefficient allows the clearance reduction between the piston and the cylinder.
Eutectic alloy – an alloy where main (aluminium) and alloying (silicon) elements are in balance.
Hypereutectic alloy – an alloy where the alloying elements are overbalanced compared to the eutectic alloy
The piston castings are heat-treated for stress relief (the piston material becomes more ductile and elastic). The pistons are machined on automated lines ensuring stability of properties and parameters (outer surface form, combustion chamber, etc.) of each piston in the mass production. After special machining the surfaces of the Motordetal pistons get a microrelief. It minimizes friction losses between the piston and the cylinder (and as a result it extends service life and reduces fuel consumption). On the surfaces of the Motordetal pistons we apply an innovative antifriction coating, called NANOFRIKS. It allows reducing friction losses and helps when lubrication is poor: during the engine starting and reduction of the engine oil viscosity. Nanofriks extends service life of the piston and as a result of the engine too. The pistons are phosphated and for this reason the surface becomes more harder, wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant. The crown and the upper compression ring groove of the pistons used in the modern passenger car engines are anodized. Anodizing makes the piston material stronger, harder, more heat-resistant and increases wear-resistance of the piston ring groove. Furthermore due to the optimal piston ring operation the service life of the piston extends.

2. Piston rings
The piston rings of the Motordetal company are produced with the equipment of GOETZE, a german company, which is one of the leaders in the global machinery industry.
All the Motordetal piston rings have a protective coating: • NcMDChrome (Nanochrome), containing carbon nanoparticles. It is applied to the working surface of the piston ring. It reduces friction losses and extends service life of the piston rings by 20%.• • Chrome-ceramic coating (CKS) - increases wear-resistance, gas impermeability and ensures optimal compression. • Phosphating - is applied to the piston ring end surface. It increases wear- and corrosion-resistance.

2.3. The Motordetal piston ring production The piston rings, depending on their application (top compression piston ring, second compression piston ring or oil control piston ring), are made of gray or ductile cast iron. Each piston ring is manufactured from an individual casting. For reduction of the scuffing potential and lapping time the face profile of the top compression piston ring is barrel-shaped.

3. Cylinder liners
The cylinder liners of the Motordetal company are made of special gray, ductile and alloyed cast iron.
Due to state-of-the-art equipment and technologies the products have high corrosion resistance, geometric accuracy, optimal oil absorption of the surface and strength.

3.1.Cylinder liner types Dry cylinder liners
Finished (honed)
The working surface is honed. The liner does not require additional machining and is ready for use right after installation in the cylinder block. The liner is inserted into the cylinder block and removed from it with little effort. The fit type is a transition fit (with minimum clearance). The liner can be removed and reinstalled with suitable tools and the cylinder block does not need to be removed from the vehicle.
The semi-finished liner - requires additional machining, using special equipment after installation in the cylinder block. The liner is inserted into the cylinder block with significant effort - the fit type is a pressfit. The liner can be removed and reinstalled industrially only after the cylinder block is removed from the vehicle and completely disassembled.
Cylinder liner casting
It serves for the cylinder block recovery when the finished or semi-finished liner is missing. It allows the cylinder block linering of all engines of passenger cars, light and medium commercial vehicles. After machining the casting becomes a dry liner.

3.1. Cylinder liner types
Wet cylinder liners
Wet cylinder liner The liner is ready for installation and use. It is inserted into the cylinder block with little effort. Special equipment is not needed to replace the cylinder liner. When necessary it is possible to remove and install the liner if the engine is not removed from the vehicle.
Note: If worn or damaged, the liner counterbore can be machined in the cylinder block and a repair liner with an oversized flange can be installed. For some engines repair liners are produced with different oversized flanges. They are machined in the cylinder block when it is removed from the vehicle.
Wet cylinder liner with fire ring It is a liner with a fire ring (gome removal ring) in the top end recess. The fire ring serves for scraping of carbon deposits from the piston top land when the piston passes through the top dead centre. This improves the engine ecological parameters.
Cylinder for air-cooled engines
It is a finished cylinder. It is possible to remove and install it if the engine is not removed from the vehicle.

3.3. The Motordetal cylinder liner production All the cylinder liners for liquid-cooled engines are manufactured by centrifugal casting. For this reason the material structure of higher quality is ensured and heavy impurities are removed. Mechanical properties of the metal are distributed uniformly across the entire part. For increase of the mechanical properties the liners are heat treated. For wear and corrosion resistance the cylinder liner surface is phosphated. The cylinder liners are produced using different types of special gray cast iron with alloying elements: Mn (manganese), Ni (nickel), Cu (copper), Si (silicon), Cr (chromium), Mo (molybdenum), etc. Due to them required physical and mechanical properties are ensured.

The plateau honing is smooth plateaus alternated with valleys. The plateaus provide compression and the valleys retain oil. The plateau honing allows quick running in of the engine cylinders and piston rings. As a result it prolongs the engine life and ensures its stability.

Piston pins
The pison pins are made of special alloying steel. The piston pin surface is hardened and quenched, and for this reason the piston pins have high strength, hardness and ideal geometry accuracy after machining. During the whole service life the piston pins preserve stability of their mechanical and physical properties.
The modern European equipment allowed us to improve the accuracy of the piston pin machining and change its fit in the piston. Before that we had to ensure a press fit from 0 to 0,01 mm between the cold piston and piston pin, but now the clearance is from 0,003 to 0,015 mm. The fit does not require the piston heating for the piston pin installation. Fixed piston pin

The fixed piston pin is anchored to the connecting rod small end with a screw and bolts and pressed. This type of piston pins can rotate only in the piston bosses.

The floating piston pin is free to rotate both in the connecting rod and in the piston bosses. Generally it is secured against axial movement by circlips. The floating pin ensures a uniform load of the parts and prevents one-sided wear.

Cylinder liner - Piston rings
Benefits
Friction reduction is ensured with the optimal combination of a shape, roughness, oilabsorption of the piston ring working surface and required contact between the piston rings and cylinder over the whole circumference. Friction losses are also reduced with plateau honing. The plateau honing allows a quicker alignment of the engine cylinders and piston rings.As a result it prolongs the engine life and ensures its stability. Some more important influencing factors are phosphating (oil-absorption improvement) for the cylinder liners and Nanochrome (NcMDChrome, reducing friction with carbon nanoparticles which serve for additional lubrication being small-sized) for the piston rings.
Cylinder liner - Piston skirt For the piston skirt surface protection the Motordetal company was the first among Russian manufacturers to apply an antifriction coating, called Nanofriks. The tests have shown that the new coating reduces friction not only for the engine break-in period, but first 40-50 thousand kilometers. Furthermore each piston skirt has a microrelief, improving oil-absorption and ensuring a better oil distribution.
Piston pin - Piston boss The piston pin connects the piston and connecting-rod and is the most highly-stressed part in the engine. Being compact-sized, under shock loading and with lack of lubrication it transmits a force from the piston to the connecting rod. Due to its optimal clearance and combination of the working surface roughnesses we managed to reduce friction losses, keeping high strength and hardness of the part surfaces.
Piston ring groove Piston ring The top compression ring operates under the highest thermal and mechanical loading. It is the effect of aggressive chemicals of abrasive and corrosion nature. The piston temperature in the top compression ring groove can be 280°C or more and it causes reduction of the alloy hardness and wear-resistance. Wear resistance is improved with the optimal clearance between the piston ring and ring groove walls and if necessary a keystone shape of the piston ring.

6. Installation 6.1. Cylinder liner installation When packing, a protective coating is applied to all the Motordetal cylinder parts. The coating dissolves in the engine oil and does not need to be removed from the surface before installation in the engine.

1 Before installation the cylinder block shall be thoroughly cleaned. The cylinder liner counterbore and sealing rings installation places shall be free from mechanical damage and corrosion.
3 Due to this the durability of the parts reduces and the parts are damaged. Furthermore it is necessary to check the liner protrusion above the cylinder block which shall be from 0,03 to 0,10 mm (the exact sizes are in accordance with your engine's Repair Manual).
For easier installation of the liners to the cylinder block the assembly paste or liquid engine oil are applied to the sealing rings. No other lubricant for the liner walls and flange seat is allowed.
If the protrusion is insufficient, there are two solutions to the problem:
2 First of all the liner is installed without sealing rings for checking if it can be inserted without jamming. The liner shall be inserted and rotate easily by hand. Otherwise it results in deformation of the liner, leading to the working surface geometry changes and deterioration of the piston and piston rings service condition.
1. The liner flange counterbore machining in the cylinder block and installation of the flange shims; 2. Installation of a liner with oversized flange height.
4 After the liner is installed, the inner surface geometry needs to be checked. The geometry insufficiency shows the increased constrictions in the area of the sealing rings.

The counterbore of the liner in the cylinder block shall be thoroughly cleaned, its geometry shall be in accordance with the technical requirements.
If the counerbore size does not ensure the required clearance, the cylinder block shall be machined and a liner with a bigger diameter shall be used.

For honed dry liners installation the clearance fit shall be 0,01 - 0,05 mm (the exact sizes are in accordance with your engine's Repair Manual)
For the dry semi-finished liners a press fit of ~0,05 mm is needed.
When installing, the liner protrusion at the block surface from 0,02 to 0,05 mm shall be ensured (the exact sizes are in accordance with your engine's Repair Manual).

In all cases the cylinders after the liner installation shall be measured to check if they are in accordance with the technical requirements! If the machining of the cylinder block contact surface is necessary, it shall be carried out in the following way: - for the finished dry liners: BEFORE the cylinder liner installation. In this case the protrusion of the upper cylinder liner face after press fitting will be defined with the cylinder liner design. - for the semi-finished dry liners: AFTER the cylinder liner installation. In this case after machining the upper cylinder liner face will be flush with the cylinder block surface.

The counterbore of the cylinder liner in the cylinder block shall be thoroughly cleaned, its geometry shall be in accordance with the technical requirements.
After pre-installing of the cylinder head the distance between the piston in top dead centre and the cylinder head shall be checked. If it is necessary, the distance shall be adjusted with a gasket of appropriate thickness inserted between the cylinder block and the cylinder.
6.2. Piston installation Piston check before installation in the cylinder block

You will find information about the piston diameter, piston clearance and direction of installation on the piston crown.
The piston diameter added to the piston clearance gives the cylinder diameter. For pistons with the anifriction coating 0,015 - 0,02 mm need to be deducted from the measurement to get the actual piston size. If the piston has measuring windows without the antifriction coating, please use them for measuring.
Piston and connecting rod assembly Before assembling the connecting rod needs to be checked for distortion (bending and twisting). A check of the clearance between the piston pin and the small end bushing is also necessary.

6.3. Piston pin installation methods Floating piston pin: rotates in the piston bosses and the connecting rod bushing. The clearance between the piston pin and the piston boss of the floating piston pin is from 0,003 mm. It is now possible due to the highprecision equipment. The piston pin shall be easily pushed into the boss holes by hand. The piston preheating is not needed.
Press-fit piston pin: Before assembling the small end bore of the connecting rod needs to be checked. The bore diameter shall ensure a press fit of 0,020,04 mm between the piston pin and the small end. If the size is insufficient, the connecting rod requires replacement. After the connecting rod is heated to 270-320° C, the oiled cold pin is inserted by hand with a device with a stop pin. Please note that the press-fit piston pin has a bigger clearance between the piston pin and the piston bosses than the floating piston pin.

The piston rings are installed with a special device, preventing them from deformations caused by the excessive spreading.
The piston rings are installed according to the marking (TOP, numerical code) which shall point to the piston crown.
Before installation of the piston rings in the piston the piston ring gap shall be controlled.
7. Boring and honing The cylinder working surface is honed. Small spiral-shaped valleys appear on the surface. The valleys serve for oil retaining on the cylinder walls. Furthermore honing minimizes friction due to area reduction of the friction surfaces in the couple "piston ring - cylinder wall". The wet and dry finished liners are honed industrially and their additional machining is not required. For installation of a repair piston with a bigger diameter in the cylinder block, where the cylinder liner is missing or for the dry semi-finished cylinder liner installation, the cylinders are bored and honed in a car service centre where the engine is repaired.

Parameters 1. For getting the required surface after the cylinder boring, 0,1 mm is added to the diameter when honing for finish-machining. 0,1 - 0,015 mm of the material are finish-honed (last 0,02-0,03 mm of the diameter for the size). 2. A honing angle shall be from 40° to 80° (60±20°). Please note that if the angle is smaller, the oil consumption reduces, but the cylinder and piston rings are worn more intensively and vice versa. 8. Starting a new engine for the first time

After starting an engine for the first time do not leave the engine idling without load for a long time.
The parts run in faster and more effective at medium-speed of the engine under light load.
3 Initial running-in of the parts is the first 200 kilometers. It is a period when the engine oil washes out dirt and debris, so the oil change is needed before the first 300 kilometers.
