When this engine, which contains a 3-ring piston, is used in place of a two ring engine application, dynamic vibration may occur. This may require a new crankshaft damper and/or flywheel with the correct bob weight. The additional cost of these parts is not eligible under warranty. See Service Magazine June 19, 1989 (SEBD197100019) for more information.

0R1154 may be converted for use in V700, V800, V900 CH, V925, V925 LH, and V1100 CTH Lift Trucks. 0R1154 is factory-set for 250 hp and 2600 rpm to 0T6002 Engine Performance Specification. 0R1154 must be readjusted to 0T5467 Engine Performance Specification for V700-V900 CH Lift Trucks and 0T4617 Engine Performance Specification for V925-V1100 CTH Lift trucks. For complete engine performance specifications, refer to “Vehicle Fuel Setting And Related Information”, microfiche Form SBFY1109. When adjusting the fuel setting, refer to Special Instruction, SMHS7013. NOTE: Whenever an engine is reset to new specifications, always install a 4W5140 Information Plate. Place the new plate on top of the original Information Plate, with the new information stamped on the new plate.

0R3231 replaces 0R0779 and contains 17.5:1 compression ratio pistons which reduce white smoke generated during cold start conditions. No single parts manual can be used to identify all the components in the new engine arrangement. However, all of the engine components except the required 7W3846 Piston Body Assembly and 7W3710 Fuel Nozzle can be obtained by using the parts manual for the 9N5149 Engine Arrangement. See Service Magazine February 25, 1991 for more details.

Some 0R0715 and 0R2545 Remanufactured Short Blocks may require a new fuel injection pump housing when used in 3406 engines built before 1975. The 0R0715 and 0R2545 Remanufactured Short Blocks may be built with either a 7N1200 or 8N9265 block casting. If the 8N9265 casting is used, the short block will not work with a 4N0812 Fuel Injection Pump Housing Assembly. This is because the oil drain seal ring used with this housing will not properly seal the oil drain hole in the block. If this situation occurs, the fuel injection pump housing can be changed or a remanufactured short block with the 7N1200 block casting may be located. See Service Magazine August 31, 1992 (SEPD0124) for more information. Using the 0R715 in early 3406A applications will require some additional parts to ensure proper operation. Please refer to S.M. Article dated September 27, 1993 for details.

TRUCK: 3406 DIRECT INJECTION How to use this chart: The “Cat Arrangement” column lists the new arrangements that were originally manufactured by Caterpillar. Some have precombustion chambers, and some are direct injection. All of the Remanufactured Engines offered are direct injection and can be used in place of both PC and DI engines. If only a Remanufactured Short Block is required, an 0R0715 block must be used in a PC engine or an 0R2545 block must be used in a DI engine. The dot indicates that special instructions are provided to assist in the installation. Although conversions from a non-aftercooled (DIT) to an aftercooled (DITA) engine configuration and vice versa are usually possible, special instructions on doing this are not currently available.
The following cross-reference charts serve as a guide to determine the remanufactured engine for each new engine application. The offering for 3406 engines is somewhat limited, and customers should take into account the configuration of the engine being replaced. Chassis design may restrict the installation of a DITA engine in place of a DIT or PCT. In these instances, the customer should use a remanufactured long block or short block and components.
Remanufactured 3406 Truck Engines do not include the Brakesaver even though some Brakesaver Engine arrangements are referenced. Additional parts and labor may be required to adapt the remanufactured engine to Brakesaver applications.
DIRECT INJECTION 3406 Engines
The offering for 3406B Jacket Water Aftercooled (JWAC) engines is fairly complete; most 3406B arrangements are listed in the cross-reference.

Customers can upgrade from a 3406 to a 3406B for a slight upgrade charge. Special instructions for upgrading are not available so chassis and engine configuration should be reviewed before attempting an upgrade. A general rule to remember is that the 3406B Engines built to a Freightliner, Kenworth, Peterbilt Arrangement are installed in a vertical position and have a middle mount turbocharger, while the Ford Arrangements are installed in a slant position and have a low mount turbocharger.
Identifying and Ordering Replacement Parts for Remanufactured Engines, Long Blocks, and Short Blocks Replacement parts for a remanufactured engine may be ordered by using the corresponding new engine arrangement. The corresponding new engine arrangement is stamped on either the engine block or valve cover identification plate. The parts needed can be found in the appropriate parts book or by a consist breakdown using TMI. The reference serial number of the reman engine will indicate the vintage of the engine to determine changes related to serial number breaks. The notes in SELD0083 will further define what improvements may be built into the engine that were not in the new engine originally. New parts are directly interchangeable unless the block has been line bored or the crankshaft machined

INSTALLATION TIPS FOR NON-STANDARD ENGINES The following are comments on installing reman engines in applications for which the reference engine was not originally designed. Installation under these circumstances can be greatly aided by comparing the consist of the reman engine with the consist of the engine being replaced. Reman engines are configured from a production engine that was designed to be installed in a particular OEM chassis. Reman engines may be installed in chassis other than what they were originally configured for if certain engine groups affecting chassis interface are modified or exchanged between the engines. The engine groups needing possible modification or exchange may include flywheel housing, exhaust manifolds, water lines, oil lines, fuel lines, air inlet, exhaust location, and oil sump location. Refer to engine spec sheets to determine if the engine being installed will cause chassis modifications due to increased height or width. Using a reman engine to replace an engine with different aspiration, mechanical control versus electronic control, or a different engine model can be accomplished in some cases. The following table contains possible exchanges with comments regarding written guidelines, parts compatibility, changes to chassis interfaces, and other considerations. The table is not intended to completely describe all the concerns that may be encountered in an installation.

Requires change to a throttle pedal with electronic control and installation of a check engine light for display of faults detected by the ECM. Assure that aftercooler and radiator capacity is adequate. Driveline compatibility is a consideration if rating changes are involved.

The following concerns should be addressed with any conversion: 1. Radiator and aftercoolers will need to be properly sized and located to assure correct engine performance. Old radiators should be cleaned. 2. The driveline must be compatible with the conversion engine rating and performance characteristics. 3. Air piping, exhaust piping, oil lines, water lines, fan drive and accessory drives may need to be modified. Some components may not be able to be exchanged between engines and must be purchased separately. 4. Fuel supply and return line size is a concern when converting from mechanical to unit injected engines due to the larger volume of fuel circulated by the unit injected engines. It is the responsibility of the engine installer to determine additional costs in parts and labor that may be incurred with any of the engine installations shown. Caterpillar Reman is not responsible for additional costs for parts or labor.
