Selection criteria : To understand activities performed and facilities provided in the centre to train students / artisans. To study the connectivity of different spaces and their relation with the surrounding.

Centre is situated on the bank of the river ‘Mahi’.

Site surrounding

As one enters in the site, It gives access to two separate areas that of the ‘Art centre’ site plan of uttarayan art centre on upper level and Contoured site ‘Cafeteria and artisans cottages’. Art centre has Studios for painting, sculputre making,pottery,classroom, seminar hall,Office area with conference hall. Workshops of wood,ceramic,stone,Metal are kept away from centre as it create noise and disturbance to the students in the centre. Cottages are located near the river front capturing view of the river. No. of cottages : 4 , Dormitories : 2 Capacity of dormitory : 10 persons Cafeteria has sitting area , kitchen, Utility area. In front of cafeteria there is a small book library with outdoor reading plaza. Vehicular access and pedestrian are connected by a wide stairways overviewing the whole campus and it act as linking bridge between residential area (cottages and Site plan showing contours and pathway cafeteria) and training area (art centre).

“ Returning to the theme of domestic architecture ”. Plan

Domestic architecture : Badoda the ‘Culutural Capital’ of Gujrat has its own style of architecture i.e. indo saracenic style and brick architecture.

Circulation within the campus :

central courtyard . This courtyard act as social space i.e. gathering space or as interaction space face towards the river, lined with trees. Use of contours such that level difference segregate the activities and creates social gathering spaces. These courtyard also act as break out space. Section showing levels

Studios : Since it’s a working space for artists, studios are carefully angled towards the best source of light. Double heighted studios with skylights for natural lighting and wind extractors for achieving proper ventilation. Verandah also act as display area.

UTTARAYAN ART S P U features: R. Architectural Workshops: A slight historical reference i.e. use of some elements of style of Badoda i.e.Indo saracenic architecture and brick architecture. Indo saracenic architecture: a fusion of western spatial organisation indian materials and decorativemotifs inspired by gothic,hindu,islamic,buddhist and ottman architecture.

Planform: Rectangular plan form with orientation such that workshops are well lighted and heat gain is reduced.

Example of indo saracenic architecture in Badoda.

Elements used are wooden balconies ,arcades, brackets, door , use of jalis, courtyard planning , painted chattai window frames etc. Reuse of wooden balconies which removed from old havelis being demolised in that region.

Workshop kept away from centre as to reduce disturbance. Its nearer to entrance of the site so that it will be easy to carry and transport the Plan : metal,form stone crafts. square plan form dinning area, As it requires morewith space kitchen for and utility area. preparation of craft thus it has open to sky utility area compounded with front yard ( outdoor brick jali allowing air movement but no workshop) visual connection. Dinning area facing towards river to enjoy the natural surrounding. Dinning area has a small library with arrangement outdoor reading plaza.

Other spaces: Jalis and courtyards provide cool air and light to the interior. Playful geometrical patterns are used to enliven the jali. Sophisticated use of brick. Ceramic tiles add decorative detail. Bricks specially cut and of a particular dimension create a dynamic pattern. Jali also helps to act as ventilator in toilet without visual disturbance.

Material used

: Use of local red brick from Ghodra. Brick with its linearity,texture and colour expresses the right aesthetic quality.

Amphitheatre: Location : In backyard of art centre . Capacity :65 person material : timber flooring of stage services : electrical points for lighting and sound system. Use of natural contour. Ottala : located at the end of art centre which act as outdoor classroom. ottala is built without harming the natural vegetation.

Located near art centre. Service block has electric control room , generator room and water purification plant. Sanitation: septic tanks are provide for each toilet block.
