CRAFT MUSEUM PURPOSE

THE CRAFT MUSEUM WAS SET UP WITH THE VIEW OF PRESERVING THE ARTISTIC AND CULTURAL HERITAGE OF INDIA. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE WAS TO COLLECT THE FINEST WORK OF INDIAN CRAFTSMEN SHIP WHICH WOULD SERVE AS SOURCE MATERIAL REVIVAL PF THE CRAFTS. THE MUSEUM HAS COLLECTION OF MORE THAN 25000 ITEMS OF FOLK AND TRIBAL ARTS WHICH SERVES AS A REFERENCE MATERIAL FOR CRAFTSMEN WHO ARE INCREASINGLY FORGETTING THEIR OWN TRADITION IN TERMS OF MATERIAL ,TECHNIQUES, DESIGNS ETC. THE MUSEUM CREATES AN AMBIENCE WHERE THE CRAFTSMEN FEEL FREE TO CONFINE TO HIS TRADITIONS .IT HELPS TO CREATE AMONG THE VISITORS A NEW AWARENESS OF INDIANS ANCIENT CULTURAL HERITAGE. EVERY MONTH THE MUSEUM INVITES ABOUT 50 TRADITIONAL ARTISTS AND CRAFT PERSONS FROM ALL OVER INDIA TO COME AND STAY IN THE MUSEUM. THUS PROVIDING THEM WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO DEMONSTRATE THEIR SKILLS, TO MARKET THEIR PRODUCT AND TO ESTABLISH LINKS WITH THEIR OWN

THE MUSEUM COMPLEX THE MUSEUM IS LOW LINED BUILDING . IT IS ORGANIZED ALONG A CENTRAL PATHWAY ,LEADING FROM ONE COURT TO THE OTHER. WALKING ALONG THE PEDESTRIAN SPINE ONE CATCHES GLIMPSES OF THE EXHIBITS THAT LIE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE COURTYARDS. THERE ARE MORE THAN 25000 ITEAMS OF FOLK AND TRIBAL CRAFT THE COURTYARD HAVE DOMES PIGEON HOUSES ADORNED WITH ARCHES LATTICE WORK PANELS ,TERRA COTTA SHRINES FOR FULSI PLANTS, MASSIVE TEMPLE CHARIOTS AND VERMILLION COVERED ANIONIC WAY SIDE OF SHRINES. ONE ENTERS THE REALM OF MARBLE AND BROCADE SHERE GOLD AND SILVER IN LAID PRECIOUS WARES, IVORY ,GEMS SURROUND ONE IN AN EXPERIENCE OF COURTLY GRANDEUR. THE WALK THROUGH THE MUSEUM IS A JOURNEY MADE SIMULTANEOUSLY THROUGH THE POTS OF AHMENDABAD STREETS OF JAISALMER .

WORKSHOPS THE CRAFT MUSEUM CONDUCTS CREATIVE WORKSHOPS IN WHICH THE STUDENTS ARE ATTACHED TO A PARTICULAR CRAFTSMEN FROM WHOM HE LEARNS THE BASIC TECHNIQUES OF THE CRAFT. THE MUD PLASTER HUTS WITH THATCHED ROOFS ACT AS WORKSHOPS FOR THE CRAFT PERSONS AND THE BRICK PAVED FLOORS AND STEPPED PLATFORM ACT AS OPEN AIR STUDIES FOR THE CHILDREN . THE MUSEUM CREATES AN IDEAL ENVIRONMENT FOR INTERACTIVE AND CREATIVELY .

THE TEMPLE COURTS OF MADURAI AND THE VILLAGE OF BANI AS IT WERE A STRATIGRAPHY OF AN ANCIENT ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE ,DISPLAYING ALL THE OBJECTS OF AN ENTIRE CIVILIZATION FROZEN ATA SINGLE LEVEL OF TIME AND SPACE.

CONCEPT THE CRAFT MUSEUM FOLLOWS THE CONCEPT OF ANCIENT TEMPLE WHICH WERE STRUCTURED AROUND OPEN TO SKY COURTYARDS CONCEPT IS OF GREAT RELEVANCE TO THE ARCHITECTURE IN AN WARM CLIMATE. THE CRAFT MUSEUM IS ORGANIZED AROUND A CENTRAL PATHWAY ,REVEALING A SEQUENCE OF OPEN SPACES ALONG THE PEDESTRIAN SPINE .OFF THESES COURTS ARE EXHIBITS OF THE VARIOUS VILLAGE CRAFTS. THE EXHIBITS CAN BE VIEWED INDIVIDUALLY OR SEEN AS UNFOLDING OF EVENTS ALONG THE WAY .THIS SEQUENCE ENDS VIA ROOF GARDENS WHICH FORMS

vThe Scales and proportions of the building are based on those of the traditional Indian village.

vCOURTYARD WITH TULSI SHRINE AND CHAMPA TREE. ,

THE VILLAGE COMPLEX THE VILLAGE COMPLEX IS A REMNANT OF A TEMPORARY EXHIBITION, ON THE THEME OF RURAL INDIA . IT COMPRISES OF 15 STRUCTURES REPRESENTING THE VILLAGE DWELLINGS AND COURTYARDS OF ASSAM , ORRISA ,BENGAL ,BIHAR ,RAJASTHAN. THE VILLAGE MATERIALS USED ARE AUTHENTIC AND ARE BUILT BY THE VILLAGERS THEM SELVES .IN EVERY TIME ITEMS OF DAY TO DAY LIFE ARE EXHIBITED IN ORDER TO GIVE A GLIMPSE OF THE WIDER CULTURAL CONTEXT.

CRAFTED MUSEUM HAS SERVED THE PURPOSE OF PROVIDING A STRONG STRUCTURE FOR SAFE PRESERVATION AND DISPLAY OF RARE OBJECTS BOT IT DOESN'T LET BUILDING SO IMPOSING THAT WOULD BELITTLE THE HUMBLER OBJECTS COLLECTED FROM VILLAGE HOMES. THE SCALE ,THE SPACES ,PROPORTIONS ,USE OF MATERIALS ALL REMINDS THE VISITOR OF A TYPICAL VILLAGE ENVIRONMENT.

DISPLAY OF THE MUSEUM ‘S COLLECTION IS AT DIFFERENT LEVELS,BREAKING THE MONOTONY OF THE DISPLAY AREA.

THE INTERNAL SPACES ARE SO LINKED WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH EXTERNAL SPACES THAT A PERSON NEVER GETS A FEELING OF AN ENCLOSED STRUCTURE .

THE WORD ‘HAAT’ IS WORD FOR WEEKLY MARKET IN RURAL, SEMIURBAN AND SOMETIMES EVEN IN URBAN AREAS IN INDIA. THE TRADITIONAL HAAT OFFERS A DELIGHTFUL AMALGAM OF CRAFTS,FOOD AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES .
