Newton Newman

 A 10-year-old fourth grader at Appleton Elementary  Short, skinny, freckled  Lives in the shadow of elder brother, Chris, whom he loves dearly  Quiet, unassuming, ignored by others  Creative, telented artist  Selfless, loving, responsible, hard-working, diciplined, independent, positive, inteligent, observant, has integrity  Fear of hights (acrophobia)  Patient but loses his temper occasionally; asserts himself when he is dressed as Captain Nobody.

Cecil Butterworth  Newt's classmate and one of Newt's two best friends  Shorter and skinnier than Newt, has a loud voice  Also ignored by the other kids at school  Outspoken, impulsive, innovative and always bursting with ideas, witty, singleminded, determined, positive; encourages and motivates his friends.

Juanita Josephina Gonzales (JJ)  Newt's classmate and one of Newt's two best friends  Is 'invisible' to the other kids at school but she does not let it bother her  Tallest girl in the fouth grade  Positive, creative, careful, sharp, intelligent, thoughtful, sensitive, observent, outspoken  A voracious reader, has amazing vocalbolary and grammer

Chris Newman  Newt's older brother in Fillmore High School  A rugby star  Tall, athletic, agile  Brotherly, loving, kind, shares a close bond with Newt  Disciplined, determined, performs well under pressure, has a sense of humour

Minor Characters Dad A busy housing contractor, always on the phone Generous - hosts pregame tailgate berbecues Give a lot of attention to Chris but neglects Newt Tries to make up for his neglect of Newt when he is informed of Newt's unusual behavior  Calm in a crisis    

Mom  A housing egent, always talking on her cell phone  Absent-minded - depends on Newt to remember things like where she left her keys and make breakfast each day  A negligent mother; does not take time to talk with Newt  Emotional about Chris's condition but tried to hide it

Minor Characters Mrs Young  Newt's teacher  Diplomatic, wise - tells the principal that Newt's parents are distracted by Chris's injury  Kind, compassionate, perceptive - realises what Newt is going through when he comes to school in his Halloween outfit  Controls her class well Mr Toomey  Principal of Appleton Elementasy School  Strict but open to reason  Watchful - when Ricky Ratner tries to intimidate Newt, Mr Toomey is watching  Is not good at remembering names

Minor Characters Mrs Marcus  School Nurse  Kind and soft-hearted - cares about Newt ans shows concern about Reggie, 'that poor, tortured boy' (p.146) Raggie Ratner A student at Merrimac High Heavily built defence player of rival football team Arch-enemy of Chris Newman on the feild Is actially a reasonable human being who is genuinely concerned about Chris, as Newt discover on the roof of the water tower  Harassed by Chris's teammates  Appleton residents mistakenly think he is planning to jump  Concerned about his image    

Minor Characters Ricky Ratner  Reggie's cousin at Fillmore Elemtary  A large, hulking seventh grader  Intimidates and threatens Newt to tell Chris's friends to leave Reggie alone

Darryl Peeps  One of the players in the football team of Fillmore High  Either didn't realise he was actually the one who knocked Chris out or was too afraid to come forward
