What you need to know

Introduction to the Cambridge Primary Series Cambridge Primary is our exciting new series for the Cambridge Primary curriculum frameworks from Cambridge International Examinations. Joining our other marketleading titles, our Primary series starts the learner’s journey and completes the suite of titles available for a lifetime of learning: from Cambridge Primary to Cambridge Checkpoint, Cambridge O level and Cambridge IGCSE to Cambridge International AS and A level. Cambridge Primary is made up of Primary English (for First Language learners), Global English* (for English as a Second Language learners), Primary Mathematics and Primary Science, and is an innovative set of resources designed to support teachers and help learners to succeed in Primary education. Cambridge Primary English, Mathematics and Science are designed to fulfil the requirements of the Cambridge Primary curriculum, developed by Cambridge International Examinations.*

*Cambridge Global English titles have not gone through

the Cambridge Endorsement as they follow the curriculum frameworks developed by English Language Assessment.

Focusing on academic achievement, this series is an ideal resource for any international or bilingual school. Cambridge Global English, Primary Mathematics and Primary Science are all written with English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in mind and focus on developing language, knowledge and skills across English, Maths and Science. The series offers the full advantage of being developed alongside Cambridge International Examinations*, whilst still being compatible with other curricula. Cambridge Primary is suitable for any primary school looking for an innovative and flexible suite of materials. Designed to set the foundations for future learning, Cambridge Primary sets clear goals for learners and teachers, and provides carefully structured questions, tasks and end-of-unit tests to help build students’ confidence and help teachers monitor progress.

*Cambridge Global English titles have not gone through the Cambridge

International Examinations endorsement process process as they follow the curriculum frameworks developed by English Language Assessment.

What is Cambridge Primary Maths?

{ Cambridge Primary Maths is an innovative combination of curriculum and resources that supports teachers and learners through best-practice international maths teaching and a problem-solving approach. This package brings together the world-class Cambridge Primary curriculum from Cambridge International Examinations, high-quality publishing from Cambridge University Press and expertise in engaging on-line enrichment materials for the mathematics curriculum from the NRICH project based at the University of Cambridge. It offers teachers an on-line tool that maps resources and materials to specific areas of the curriculum. The resources include engaging on-line activities, Cambridge Primary textbooks and e-books, and examples of Cambridge Primary Maths in action.

What is Cambridge Primary Mathematics Stages 1–6? Cambridge Primary Mathematics Stages 1-6 from Cambridge University Press provide the ‘resource’ element of Cambridge Primary Maths, through learner books, games books and teacher resources. Our textbooks provide best-in-class support for this problem solving approach, based on pedagogical best practice found in successful schools across the world. Our resources help learners develop to become independent, confident thinkers who are able to express themselves clearly. Our resources encourage leaners to take an investigatory approach and help learners develop the skills and language to find answers, solve problems and apply their newly found knowledge, through engaging activities and games. Designed with English as Second Language learners in mind, our resources use accessible language and colourful illustrations throughout to develop young learner’s numeracy skills across the 5 key content areas: Number, Geometry, Measure, Handling data and Problem solving.

Cambridge Primary Mathematics Stages 1 - 6: Accessible language is used throughout to best communicate mathematical concepts to English as Second Language learners. Incorporate colourful illustrations, designed to help visual learning and those with lower literacy. Fun activities, questions, investigations and games develop young learners’ numeracy and support learning through discovery. Promote classroom discussion to help young learners’ mathematical communication skills. Contain defined learning objectives to help track progress along with an objective mapping grid to help plan teaching. Support teachers with hints and tips and provides further guidance and advice to get the most out of the learner and games books. Provide additional activities to help teachers adapt lessons to different levels of academic ability. Are fully compatible with Cambridge Global English, Cambridge Primary English, and Cambridge Primary Science or can be used as a stand-alone resource. Provide an excellent foundation for Cambridge Checkpoint Mathematics stages 7– supporting the Cambridge Secondary 1 Curriculum.

Cambridge Primary Maths – NRICH Online resources NRICH is a mathematics project publishing free mathematics enrichment resources for pupils of all ages based in both the University of Cambridge’s Faculty of Education and the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. The Cambridge Primary Maths website maps NRICH resources and links to the primary curriculum and Cambridge Primary textbooks and e-books and offers further guidance and examples of Cambridge Primary Maths in action. Number Hundreds, tens and ones Let’s investigate

A set of place value cards has been used to make nine three-digit numbers. Here are seven of the numbers.

Use a set of place value cards to help you.

Which place value cards are missing? How many different three-digit numbers can you make with the missing place value cards?

Does it matter which digit cards are the missing ones? Will you always be able to make that many numbers? Why? Use a set of place value cards to make nine three-digit numbers. Show a friend seven of the numbers and challenge them to tell you the other two numbers. If the numbers are incorrect, but your friend has identified the correct cards, give them another try to guess your numbers.

FAQs The Cambridge University Press Primary series seems to be written to a high level. Why is this? This is because the series follows the globally recognised Cambridge International Curriculum. Although it may initially appear challenging, the skills-led, enquiry-based approach means that teachers will be able to help their pupils to attain the appropriate international standards of achievement. Is there enough material to last for a whole school year? Is it too much material for the school year? The course is very flexible; it may be used alongside or in support of other curricula, and the thematic/ unit approach allows schools to adapt it to their needs. At what level is each stage? As Cambridge Primary Science and Mathematics are also ‘language controlled’, they correspond to levels A1 to A2. Although the language levels do not comprise the content, they do reflect the language skills needed to access the content.
