is important because …. It supports the development of the student as a whole person (NSW Department of Education and Communities, n.d.) by educating them on a number of relevant topics including :  Interpersonal Relationships  Growth and Development  Personal Health Choices  Safe Living  How to have Active Lifestyles through Games and Sports, Gymnastics, and Dance. (Board of Studies, 1999)

helps students …  build upon their communicating skills through expressing their needs and opinions, and learning to actively listen in a range of situations;  make decisions about healthy personal and lifestyle choices;  learn to interact positively with others by working collaboratively, receiving and offering encouragement, and developing and maintaining friendships;  move effectively and increase participation in a range of physical activities and;  gather information to solve-problems effectively These essential skills nurture the healthy development of students

 Only a quarter of children aged between 5 and 15 years in NSW do 60 minutes of physical activity each day! (Healthy Kids, 2014a)

 In 2004, the number of students in years K, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 who were overweight or obese had risen from one in 10 in 1985 to one in four in 2004  Obese children have a 25-50% chance of being obese adults  This leads to poorer health outcomes and puts a significant strain on our bodies (Healthy Kids, 2014b)

enables students to develop positive attitudes towards physical activity and lifelong

healthy choices (NSW Department of Education and Communities, n.d.)

This provides many benefits to students including:       

Healthy growth and development Strong bones and muscles healthy weight Improved cardiovascular fitness Improved posture Increased confidence and self-esteem Positive relationships

PDHPE is important for all students as it promotes the physical, social and emotional growth of students and nurtures positive attitudes towards healthy and active lifestyles (NSW Department of Education and Communities, n.d.)
