Hi, Business rules and calc scripts are the same as they both run calculations against essbase, the language is also the same. The added benefit with business rules are that you can use variables and runtime prompts. You can also link planning with business rules and pass information from a web form into a business rules. We can use Business Rule for all applications and it is GUI. The main difference of BR with Calc Script is Run Time prompts. Like above may features are there, Global Varibles, we can provide security to Business Rules etc Thanks & Regards, Sravan Kumar.

Given all of the benefits of using business rules, when/why would one use a calculation script? I'm just getting into learning the development of calculations in Hyperion, and would appreciate any insight on this. Kind Regards.

For my purposes, one-off rules are all done as calc scripts unless I need to prompt. Scripts requiring prompts or run via planning are all rules. With rules you still need to apply security even for one-off rules. Calc scripts don't have that requirement so fewer clicks to get it running. I also find that the calc script editor is superior for error messages and find/replace. One of the earlier comments that calc scripts can only be run on one database is true when executing via eas but not true when executed using a batch script. Dave

When the number of dimension and the dimension members are huge the date size tends to increase . If you write a genralized calc script to be executed for all the scenrios, versions , entities etc it takes a very long time to get executed and it will also include those scenarios or versions that dnt even have data on them , in order to save the time and essbase from uneccassary calculations we use HBR . When we execute the calculation using the HBR we can give the run time prompts for various dimensions , so we can restrict the calculation to be executed on a particular set of dimension members for that particular calculation.
