Introduction
1.1 Positioning The rapid development in the field of mobile communications technology brings about sharp growth in the number of mobile phone users, which increasingly pose high requirements in the network quality of operators. In urban areas, network quality in places such as office buildings, business centers, and hotels has caught much attention. However, the size and weight of the BTS normally cause difficulty in acquiring a suitable site for operators during network deployment. Customer-oriented and innovative, Huawei unveils the industry-leading BTS3900E GSM (hereafter referred to as BTS3900E). Characterized by its small size, large capacity, and low power consumption and only one functional module, the BTS3900E, is an integrated BTS with outstanding performance, which provides an excellent indoor coverage solution for operators. Generally, indoor coverage is accompanied with difficult site selection and high requirements on network performance. The highly integrated BTS3900E is designed with only one functional module. Small and lightweight, the BTS3900E is easy to install and endowed with high capacity and extraordinary performance, rendering it an effective solution for operators. Beyond that, the BTS3900E complies with the International Protection standard IP65. The strong outdoor environment adaptability enables the BTS3900E to fulfill outdoor installation requirements, and to achieve good performance even for coverage in urban hotspots and rural outlying areas. The BTS3900E supports up to six carriers. Capacity can be expanded through the addition of modules. Each synchronous site supports up to 18 carriers. Figure 1-1 shows the BTS3900E.

1.2 Benefits Compact Structure and Quick Network Construction The BTS3900E has a highly integrated design, requiring less cable connections and facilitates installation and maintenance. In compliance with the IP65 protection degree, the BTS3900E features strong environment adaptability and has no need for an equipment room. The BTS3900E can share the Distributed Antenna System (DAS) on the existing network to maximize the investment protection for operators during network upgrade. Meanwhile, the compact and lightweight BTS3900E has a small number of spare parts, thus greatly reducing the cost of transportation and maintenance. The various installation options such as wall-mounted, tower-mounted, support-mounted, and pole-mounted are possible with the BTS3900E. These options can well address the operators' requirements for quick and flexible site deployment, significantly accelerating network construction.
Expanded Capacity and Enhanced Coverage The BTS3900E supports up to six carriers. The capacity of the BTS3900E can be expanded to 18 carriers through the addition of modules. In contrast to conventional indoor coverage solutions, the BTS3900E substantially expands the capacity of the coverage, enhances the traffic absorbing capability, and increases operators' revenues. Since it can be installed close to the antenna system, BTS3900E has a high transmission power at the Top of Cabinet. Combined with the flexibility in site deployment, the BTS3900E remarkably improves network coverage. Drawing on such prominent advantages in coverage and capacity, the BTS3900E can assist operators in enhancing network quality and user experience. Thanks to the advanced Multi-Carrier Power Amplifier (MCPA) technology, the BTS3900E can smoothly and quickly change from the coverage mode to the capacity mode, flexibly responding to network requirements at different phases.

Low Power Consumption and Energy Saving The BTS3900E, another green BTS launched by Huawei, is conducive to the construction of eco-friendly networks for operators. The low power consumption design and natural heat dissipation mode allow the BTS3900E to work in energy saving mode. Apart from lowered power consumption, the application scope of the BTS3900E is greatly expanded, and green energy such as the solar and wind energy can be fully utilized.
Smooth Evolution and CAPEX Saving Data services have been facing a fast rise in applications in indoor coverage and urban hotspots area. The BTS3900E supports the PS service of the GPRS and EDGE and smooth evolution to the EDGE+, thus providing data services of higher rates. The investment of operators can be protected by reusing the hardware equipment during evolution.

Architecture
2.1 Overview With a highly integrated structure, the BTS3900E incorporates all the following functions of conventional BTSs in one functional module: l

The BTS3900E has two types of functional modules: AC module and DC module, where the former supports 110 and 220 V AC power inputs and the latter supports – 48 V DC power input.

The functional module of the BTS3900E consists of the following units: l
AC/DC converter The AC/DC converter is located in the BTS3900E AC module. The AC/DC converter converts the 110 or 220 V AC input power to operating DC voltage and distributes power to other units in the module.

DC/DC converter The DC/DC converter is located in the BTS3900E DC module. The DC/DC converter converts the –48 V DC input power to operating DC voltage and distributes power to other units in the module.

Transmission interface unit
l
The transmission interface unit provides the E1/T1 transmission port, FE transmission port, and ports for combined cabinets. The E1/T1 transmission port supports two E1s/T1s. The FE electrical port implements FE transmission. The two ports for combined cabinets connect to extension modules. Alarm interface unit The alarm interface unit provides inputs of environment monitoring signals: four dry contact alarms and one RS485 signal.

Main control unit The main control unit manages the entire BTS3900E in a centralized manner in terms of OM and signaling processing. Also, the main control unit provides the system clock.

Baseband unit The baseband unit performs functions such as signaling processing, channel coding and decoding, and modulation and demodulation.

RF unit The RF unit employs the MCPA technology to achieve the processing capability of one to six carriers.

Application Scenarios
3.1 General The increasingly difficult site lease has made site acquisition into a bottleneck for network construction. To address this issue, operators are pressing for a BTS with low site requirements. With only one module required to be installed, the BTS3900E features easy installation and low environment requirements, which reduces difficulty in site acquisition. The BTS3900E has a wide variety of installation options, such as installation on a pole, wall, tower (not for the AC module), or stand. Figure3-1 shows the typical installation options of the BTS3900E. Figure 3-1 Typical installation options

If the module is mounted on a tower or a pole, the vertical height of the module must be less than or equal to 15 m.
3.2 Application of the BTS3900E The BTS3900E provides an ideal solution to urban indoor coverage, coverage in hotspot areas, application of filling coverage holes in hotspot areas, as well as coverage in rural outlying areas.
Indoor Coverage Along with the development of cities, the indoor mobile application has become widespread. For indoor coverage scenarios, however, operators are facing great challenges from the perspective of site selection and construction speed. If macro BTSs are used to serve indoor coverage, operators are frequently confronted with high lease cost of equipment rooms, and the noises generated by macro BTSs make site acquisition even more difficult. Therefore, operators are pressing for a BTS that places the equipment room in dispensable and generates low noises. In indoor coverage scenarios, the BTS may be installed in locations such as the light-current shaft, or storeroom. Such locations present complicated environment, confined installation space, and highly difficult installation, which requires the BTS compact, light, and possessed with strong environment adaptability. Attributing to its compact structure and marvelous performance, the BTS3900E aids operators in constructing an indoor network with high capacity and good coverage. Such network, without doubt, brings more benefits for operators. As a signal source, the BTS3900E, combined with the DAS, can be widely applied in indoor coverage scenarios that require high capacity and quality, such as hotels, office buildings, supermarkets, and business centers. Figure 3-2 shows one of the application scenarios.

Hotspot Coverage In urban hotspot areas, high capacity of a BTS is always contradictory to the easy installation of the BTS. The compact and light BTS3900E with high capacity, however, allows easy site selection, simple engineering, and easy installation, thus contributing to fast network deployment at lower costs for operators. The BTS3900E can be used to absorb traffic or fill coverage holes in hotspot areas. Figure 3-3 shows the application in the hotspot coverage scenario.

Rural Coverage The BTS with low power consumption and strong environment adaptability can well fulfill applications in rural areas, network deployment of which is always complicated by deficient transmission resources and instable power supply. In addition to significant reduction in power consumption, the BTS3900E saves much energy and takes advantage of green energy, such as luminous energy, wind energy, and methane that are abundant in rural areas. The BTS3900E complies with IP65 and is strongly adaptive to temperature and outdoor environment. The BTS3900E works at –40℃ to +45℃ in the presence of solar radiation and at –40℃ to +50℃ in the absence of solar radiation. Furthermore, the BTS3900E supports wide AC power voltage range from 90 V to 290 V to satisfy requirements of areas with unstable power supply voltage. With only one module, the BTS3900E features simple structure and easy installation. Therefore, requirements for installation techniques and tools are low, and engineers after receiving simple training are qualified to install the BTS3900E. The BTS3900E can have significant achievements in rural areas where demand on wide coverage is not high. Figure 3-4 shows the rural coverage scenario.
