National foreword This British Standard has been prepared by Technical Committee PSE/15 and is the English language version of EN ISO 6708:1995 — Pipework components — Definition and selection of DN (nominal size), published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). It is identical with ISO 6708:1995, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations.

3 DN Series

This International Standard gives the definition of DN (nominal size) when applied to components of a pipework system, as specified in those standards which use the DN designation system.

The preferred DN values are as follows: DN 10

DN 250

DN 1 500

DN 15

DN 300

an alphanumeric designation of size for components of a pipework system, which is used for reference purposes. It comprises the letters DN followed by a dimensionless whole number which is indirectly related to the physical size, in millimetres, of the bore or outside diameter of the end connections

NOTE1 Other methods of size designation are also used, e.g. products having threaded, compression, solder or welded end connections or products designated by NPS (nominal pipe size), OD (outside diameter), ID (inside diameter), but these are not defined in this International Standard.

NOTE 2 The number following the letters DN does not represent a measurable value and should not be used for calculation purposes except where specified in the relevant standard. NOTE 3 In those standards which use the DN designation system, any relationship between DN and component dimensions should be given, e.g. DN/OD or DN/ID.
