 Product Description

1.1 Product Overview Overview The ESM is an energy storage unit composed of lithium batteries. It features better charge and discharge performance, longer service life, and less self-discharge loss than ordinary batteries. An ESM consists of electrochemical cells, an energy storage management unit (ESMU), power and signal terminals, and mechanical parts. It can be used as an independent 48 V unit, supports the mixed use of old and new batteries as well as lithium and lead-acid batteries, and can c an collaborate with third-party power systems. 2 Application Description

2.2 Online Expansion In the maintenance mode of the ESM, the system capacity or power can be expanded without disconnecting the battery supply so that the site will not break down in case of a mains power failure during capacity expansion.

2.3 Application in Class B Environments with Direct  Ventilation  V entilation The ESM can be used in class A or B environments with direct ventilation but cannot be used separately in class C or D environments. If the ESM needs to be used in class C or D environments, cabinets with air conditioners and a high IP rating (IP55 or higher) must be deployed. Environments subject to atmospheric corrosion can be classied classied into  into four categories: ●

Class A environ environment ment (controll (controlled ed environmen environment): t): refer refer tto o indoor indoor environmen environments ts where the ambient temperature and humidity are controlled (including rooms where people live) and the relative humidity of air is ccontrolled ontrolled below 65%.

Class Class B envir environm onment ent (unc (uncont ontro rolle lled d env envir ironm onment ent): ): refe referr to ind indoor oor environments where the ambient temperature and humidity are not controlled or outdoor environments (with simple shielding measures) where the humidity can reach 100%.

Class C enviro environment nment (harsh (harsh enviro environment nment): ): refer refer to o outdoo utdoorr land land envir environmen onments ts (with simple shielding measures) near seas or pollution sources. If a site is near a sea, it is 0.5–3.7 km away from the sea. If a site is near a pollution source, it is at most 3.7 km away from salt lakes, 3 km away from heavy pollution sources such as smelteries, coal mines, and thermal power plants, 2 km away from medium pollution sources such as chemical, rubber rubber,, and galvanization industries, or 1 km away from light pollution sources such as packing houses, tanneries, and boiler rooms.

Class envir environmen onment t (sea (sea environmen environment): t): refer ref er tto o outdoo o utdoor r land land envir onments ts (with D simple shielding measures) at most 500 m away from theenvironmen seashore or environments on the sea.

2 Application Description

When the ESM is used in an environment below –20°C, a heater needs to be added in the cabinet, and batteries can be discharged after the battery temperature rises to –17°C or above.

2.5 Storage with Low SOC (≤ 5%) The ESM has application ESMU staticscenarios, power consumption and powerof. In of.  In actual avoid storing anself-discharge ESM with lowloss SOCafter (≤ 5%). If  unavoidable, limit the storage duration to 30 days at 25°C or 15 days at 45°C. Promptly recharge the ESM after the storage. Otherwise, the ESM may be damaged due to overdischarge, which requires replacing the ESM. The following situations may cause storage of ESMs in discharge state: 1.

After the site site power power suppl supply y is discon disconnected nected due to to a mains mains outage outage,, the power power supply is not recovered for a long time because the faults (such as cable faults) cannot be rectied rectied in  in a timely manner.

2.

After installation installation and commissioni commissioning ng are complete, complete, the mains power power is switched of  directly  directly without powering of  the  the ESM. The ESM can enter the low power mode only after being completely c ompletely discharged, and the interval for onsite acceptance check is long.

3.

Other Other reaso reasons ns resu result lt in that that the the ESM canno cannott enter enter the the low powe powerr mode mode normally.

In the the non-maint non-maintenanc enance e modes, modes, hold hold down down the the Manual Manual ON/OF ON/OFF F button button for for at least 15s to enter the maintenance mode.

2.

In the the maintenan maintenance ce mode, mode, hold hold down down the the Manual Manual ON/OFF ON/OFF button button for for at least 15s to exit the maintenance mode.

Before replacing an ESM in an actual maintenance scenario, hold down the Manual ON/OFF button for the ESM to power of. of. After  After the ESM is replaced, hold down the Manual ON/OFF button for at least 15s on the new ESM to exit the maintenance mode.

Removing the Old ESM Step 1 Wear the protective gloves. Step 2 Switch the BAT– BAT– battery circuit breaker on the power sy system stem to OFF or remove the battery fuse. Step 3 Use the Manual ON/OFF button on the ESM to turn of  the  the battery output. Step 4 Disconnect the cables from the old ESM. Insulate each cable and label it immediately after disconnecting it. Step 5 Loosen the screws on the panel and remove the ESM. ----End

Installing the New ESM Step 1 Install the new ESM and tighten the screws. Step 2 Hold down the Manual ON/OFF button for 15s for the ESM to enter the maintenance mode. In this mode, all indicators blink, the ESM board is activated, but the ESM will not be charged or discharged. Step 3 Connect the cables to the new ESM based on the cable labels. Step 4 Switch the BAT– BAT– battery circuit breaker in the power system to ON or reinstall the battery fuse using a fuse extracting unit. Step 5 Hold down the Manual ON/OFF button for 15s for the ESM to exit the maintenance mode. The ESM is automatically activated and connects to the power system. Avoi Avoid d inge ingest stio ion n of ESM ESM comp compon onen ents ts..

Protect Protect the the E ESMs SMs from mechanical mechanical vibration, vibration, collision, collision, punctures punctures,, and and strong strong impact. Otherwise, the ESMs may catch re.

Do not throw ESMs in re re because  because this may cause the ESMs to ignite.

Replaci Replacing ng an ESM with with an an incorr incorrect ect mode modell may caus cause e cross cross ccurr urrent ent and and bias bias current, which will trigger ESM protection. Long-time operation with an incorrect model will result in cell or board faults, which may cause risks such as re.

If the the ESM loop loop is shor short-ci t-circ rcuit uited, ed, E ESM SM prote protectio ction n will will be tri trigge ggere red d and the the ESM cannot be charged or discharged. Long-time frequent short circuiting can result in cell or board faults, which may cause risks such as re.

A Common Criteria

Miso Mi sope perrat atio ions ns

Prot ote ectio ction n Desc Descri ript ptio ion n

Reverse connection

If terminals are connected with reverse polarity, the ESM will not start and will stay in sleep mode. If you hold down the MANUAL ON/OFF button to activate the ESM, it will report a protection alarm and the ALM indicator will be lit.

External short circuit

If the ESM loop is short-circuited, ESM protection will be triggered and the ESM cannot be charged or discharged. Long-time frequent short circuiting can result in cell or board faults, which may cause risks such as re.

Series connection

ESMs cannot be connected in series. If ESMs are connected in series forcibly, ESM protection will be triggered. Operations outside the protection range will result in board or battery damage and battery protection failure, which may cause risks such as re.

Gas Composition The ESM is an enclosed battery system and will not release any gases under normal operations. If the ESM is severely misused, for example, being burned or thunderstruck, the ESM may be damaged, resulting in electrolyte elec trolyte leakage. Because the electrolyte is of organic carbonate nature, it may produce CO 2, CO, and N2 after being burned.
