Sew buttons to foundation chain of neck warmer, sewing one button at base of each of first 5 broomstick groups. Weave in the ends. To button neckwarmer, wrap warmer around neck and use eyes of broomstick groups across short edge as buttonholes. SCARF

To make a scarf, change the number of foundation chains and rows worked, as follows: Ch 16, work Rows 1 and 2 as for neckwarmer, then repeat Row 2 until scarf is desired length. Fasten off.

he first question most people have about broomstick lace is, “Is it really made with a broomstick?” The answer is that although you can use a broomstick, it’s not required to produce this lacy fabric, which is also known as “jiffy lace,” “lace loops,” and “peacock’s eye.” A large knitting needle works just as well, and its diameter determines the size of the lace’s eye. Your project will be the same width as the needle’s length, unless you combine strips of lace to make a wider piece. For extra-wide projects, you can use an actual broomstick or knitting needle with a flexible cable. To begin, you’ll need a regular crochet hook, yarn, and a single jumbo knitting needle in size 17 (12.75mm), 19 (15 mm), 35 (19 mm), or 50 (25 mm). Broomstick lace is a two-step process that is similar to Tunisian Crochet (Afghan Stitch): Loops are worked on in one direction (loop pass), and then

worked off in the other direction (return pass), without turning the work.

MEASURING GAUGE

Step 4 Continue this method of Step 1 You can begin with either a

foundation chain or a foundation row of single crochet, but you’ll probably find it’s easier to start with an sc foundation. After you make the foundation, hold the broomstick/ needle against the last stitch, remove the hook from the last loop, enlarge the loop, and insert the stick/needle in its place.

Learn to Crochet Making a Foundation Chain

1

Start by making a slipknot and positioning it near the end of the hook. Wrap the working yarn (the yarn attached to the ball or skein) around the hook as shown. Wrapping the yarn in this way is called a yarn over.

Single Crochet (sc)

1

Insert the hook under both the front and back loops (i.e., under the complete “V”) of the 2nd chain from the hook. Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front (this is called a yarn over) and catch it with the hook. Draw the yarn through the V.

Half Double Crochet (hdc)

1

For this stitch, yarn over, then insert the hook under the “V” of the 3rd chain stitch from the hook. Yarn over again and draw the yarn through the V.

2

Draw the yarn through the loop on the hook by catching it with the hook and pulling toward you.

2

You now have two loops on the hook.  Yarn over and draw the yarn through both loops on the hook.

2

You now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw the hook through all three loops at once.

3

One chain stitch is complete. Lightly tug on the yarn to tighten the loop if it is very loose, or wiggle the hook to loosen the loop if it is tight. Repeat from step 1 to make as many chains as required for your pattern.

3 do not count loop on hook

One single crochet stitch is complete. Continue to repeat steps 1 and 2, inserting the hook into each V across the row.

3

One half double crochet stitch is complete. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until you reach the end of the row. To proceed to the next row, make two chain stitches and turn.

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th do not count slipknot

4

To count the number of chain stitches made, hold the chain so that the “V”s are all lined up. Do not count the loop on the hook or the slipknot you made when beginning the chain. Each V counts as one chain made.

4

When you reach the end of the row, make one chain stitch (this is called a turning chain), then turn the piece from right to left. To begin the next row, insert the hook under the V of the first stitch (skipping the one chain stitch you just made) and repeat the steps.

Double Crochet (dc)

1

Yarn over, then insert the hook under the “V” of the 4th chain stitch from the hook.  Yarn over again and catch the yarn, drawing it through the V.

Treble Crochet (tc)

1

Yarn over two times, then insert the hook under the “V” of the 5th chain stitch from the hook. Yarn over again and catch the yarn with the hook, drawing it through the V.

Slip Stitch (sl st)

Insert the hook under the “V” indicated in the pattern. Yarn over and draw through the  V and through the loop on the hook in one movement. One slip stitch is complete. Note that the slip stitch does not create much height when worked; it is used mainly to anchor stitches, shape pieces, join circles, and for other utilitarian jobs.

Front Post Stitch

2

You now have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw the yarn through the first two loops.

2

You now have four loops on the hook. Yarn over and draw through the first two loops (three loops remain on hook). Yarn over again and draw through the next two loops (two loops remain). Yarn over again and draw through both loops.

Working with hook in front of work, insert hook from right to left around the post (or vertical segment) of the stitch indicated.  Yarn over and complete stitch as usual.

3

You now have two loops remaining on the hook. Yarn over and draw the hook through the two loops.

Back Post Stitch

3

One treble crochet is complete. Continue to repeat steps 1 and 2 until you reach the end of the row. To begin the next row, make four chain stitches and turn.

4

One double crochet stitch is complete. Continue to repeat steps 1 through 3 until you reach the end of the row. To begin the next row, make three chain stitches and turn.
