WHY GUN BLUING?
A Great Beginning …
No other activity or line o work in a gun shop or sporting goods store teaches the mechanics o a gun better than bluing. To reblue a gun, one has to completely dismantle it piece-by-piece and each o the hundreds o varieties o guns that one handles has its own peculiarities. Ater one has handled about so many guns, the whole theory o a gun’s mechanical operation becomes ingrained in one’s mind, never to be lost. Further, continued handling o the more popular guns soon leads the gunsmith to know, almost automatically and without looking, which pieces are worn; which pieces should be replaced. There is also a money making eature - not only is bluing airly proitable but it also gives the dealer or gunsmith an opportunity to become better acquainted with his shooting customers. Nothing pleases a gunnut more than to have his avorite gun made like new by a gunsmith, and as a result he is inclined to look up to the man who worked such miracles - or bluing does seem to be magic to the uninitiated. So! As sights and scopes, slings and gun cases are needed, the sportsman not only buys rom the man who did up his gun, he brings along his riends. The original cost o setting up a bluing shop is not great, nor is it necessary to buy a lot o unnecessary supplies. Bluing tanks, burners, some bluing salts and cleaner, polish and some wheels and you’re in business. From then on, buy as you need - don’t buy unless you do need. So ar as bluing salts are concerned - we make no claim that ours are so much superior to anyone else’s. We do claim, and have have Bureau o Standards reports to prove it, that a lot o salts claimed to be as good as ours are not . . . But let us not kid anybody - there are a lot o salts on the market as good as ours - about. HOT CHEMICAL BLUING COMPOUND For Rebluing Stainless Steels, Cast Iron & Winchester 94’s Over #2,700,000 In the past, it was almost impossible for the general gun- smithing or bluing shop to blue stainless steel guns successfully. Now, with Oxynate No. 84, we have a superior new formulation for stainless bluing that has met and passed all of our demands and requirements. It has worked on all the popular guns (S&W’s, Rugers, and virtually every type of stainless we could find), and even does a mighty good job on Cast Irons. It is predictable, repeatable, reliable and easy to operate. Blue an action or frame with a stainless barrel in No. 84 first, then go into the No. 7 tank to blue the action or frame. The whole process is explained in the instructions.

Unhooks Gunsmiths FromThe Gas-Pipe Leash Compact, portable bluing system lets the pistolsmith, kniemaker and small parts abricator choose the most convenient place to do the bluing. Roll the system out to blue, then roll it out o the way when you’re done. There’s no need to dig out and set up tanks, stands, chemicals and burners, or dedicate a room speciically or bluing. The Roll-Around System comes complete with the mobile bluing cart, tanks, burners, the necessary chemicals and Brownells clear, concise bluing instructions to walk you through the process. The only other things you need are an ordinary gas grill propane tank, a garden hose or the lowing water rinse and a drain or runo area. The rugged, welded steel cart moves easily on heavy-duty, locking casters and carries three, 20" x 6" x 6" mild steel tanks. The bottom shel has an opening to hold the propane tank and extra room to store supplies, or locate the ourth tank or water displacing oil – saely away rom the heat source. Braided, stainless steel, lex lines run to a “Y” and a single, 16" long line provides easy, one-connection hookup to your propane tank. Optional 96" long lex line provides extra length or direct connection to 100-lb. propane tanks, by simply swapping out the regulator supplied with the standard gas line. conventional pipe burners. Heat-up is smooth; no hot spots or lumpy salts to break up, because the solution is heated so gently. Parkerizing sludge on the tank bottom is virtually eliminated. You’ll need a heater and control unit or each tank. We have two heaters: a high output 6kw or Bluing and Boiling Water Rinse tanks, and a 4kw or Parkerizing, 909, and B.O.N. tanks. Both include an 8" long “pigtail” which your electrician can wire into the Control Unit. The Low Temp Control Unit covers a range rom 30° F. to 220° F. Our Oxynate No. 7 hot salts bluing is the type most commonly used by irearms manuacturers and oered by more ully equipped gunsmith shops than any other. The advantages are: speed o the operation; uniormity o color; the relative simplicity o the process and a very consistent, durable inish on a variety o dierent types o steels: one that closely matches the original inish on many o the irearms produced commercially within the last ity years or so. This is very important, or you can provide your customers a inish they are amiliar with and ind desirable. Also, hot salts bluing is what most olks expect rom a proessional gunsmith. And, since it is not normally done by a hobbyist or tinkerer, it is the popularly accepted mark o the proessional gunsmith. To do the inest possible job o bluing with Oxynate No.7, you’ll need to set up a separate room to keep the steam and humidity generated, away rom tools or guns. You’ll also need tanks, stands, burners, saety gear and an adequate source o natural gas, propane or electricity.

NITRE BLUE BLUING
Bluing can also be done by controlled heating o the part and Brownells NitreBlue is an example o this type o bluing. It is a very old process that was used r equently during the 19th century. The salts liquey when heated to approximately 275° F. to 300° F. The normal “bluing” temperature is around 600° F. NitreBlue™ Bluing requires very little equipment: the salts, a container to heat them in, and a heat source. By varying the amount o time you submerge your workpiece and the temperature o the liqueied salts, you can obtain colors ranging rom the straw ound on Luger triggers to the very bright blue ound on older Colt revolvers. Because o the high temperatures involved, NitreBlue Bluing should be used on small, non-critical components such as butt plates, grip caps and sights, to avoid changing any heat-treating on action parts. OXPHO-BLUE, DICROPAN- T4, & 44/40
Cold blues, like our Oxpho Blue, Dicropan T4 and 44/40, are ideal or the hobbyist or or the shop that does only a bit o metal inish touch-up rom time to time. No special equipment is required other than a solvent to remove all traces o grease or oil and a swab or cleaning patch to apply the cold blue. Dicropan IM will provide a very attractive blue/black color and an extremely durable, abrasion resistant inish. It is completely sae to use on sot soldered, double barrel shotguns. Originally developed or the occasional bluer who is not equipped to completely polish a gun prior to bluing, Oxpho Blue - because o its ease o application and remarkably superior results - has become a avorite o the proessional gunsmith as well. With Oxpho-Blue, all you need do in most cases, is dampen a piece o cotton lannel and give the area a good rubbing. The chemical goes through the oil on the gun, removes thin rust and blues the steel underneath. No ater-rust. It has developed, however, that in the hands o a careul cratsman, not only is the Oxpho-Blue inish beautiul, but it is also more durable and weather resistant than any other known chemical inish! 4. “Wetting” characteristics o the solution, giving it the ability to penetrate oil, dirt, etc., on the surace o the gun; blue the metal underneath; remove rust and dirt; leave the gun blued and ready or oiling. 5. BASIC EQUIPMENT First, you need something to turn the wheels.
