BITUMEN EMULSION: For Road Construction and Road Maintenance Application A new approach

Prepared by Eng. Habtamu Sedie

History of Asphalt Emulsion Virtually all roadway requirement can be met with emulsions. Judicious selection and use can yield significant economic and environmental benefits. -Surface treatment -Asphalt recycling -Prime coats -Tack coats -Maintenance patching -Crack filling and others

Factors contributed to interest in the use of Asphalt Emulsion • - Energy saving • - Little or no hydrocarbon emissions • - ability of certain types of emulsions to coat damp aggregate surfaces – fuel saving for heating and drying aggregate • - The ability to use the cold materials at remote sites • Applicability for us in preventive maintenance

Substitution of Emulsion with cut back asphalts • We strongly suggest this to be considered not by making a mandatory action but to allow emulsions as substitution of Cut Back- Asphalt in some construction cases.

Why substitution? - Asphalt emulsion technology has been innovative in meeting the challenges of increased traffic, shrinking budget and environmental concerns. (for developed world) -For us 1. Import substitution by producing the emulsion in Ethiopia 2. Dollar savings made by decreasing cutback Asphalt import 3. Make road repair system available all

Emulsion for Road Maintenance The menace and inconvenience of potholes on Ethiopian roads will be a thing of the past, following the introduction of a new machine that can fill potholes in ten minutes.

The Technology

Spray Injection Patching It involves four basic steps:

1. Cleaning

2. Emulsion spraying

3. Application of Emulsion and Aggregate Mix

Strassmayr Blow-Patching technology[via torchbrowser.com]_2.mp4

4. Application smaller size aggregate

Benefits Simplicity -the entire repair job can take just one

minute from start to finish – making it up to four times faster than traditional methods -Unlike other methods, spray patching truly is a successful one-man show. -no equipment with which to hassle, translating into time saved from unloading and loading at the site of each new pothole

Material Savings spray patch material is mixed just before it’s sprayed down, the process produces minimal waste. At the end of the day, there’s no concern of wasted mix. Therefore, though the initial material costs remain the same, eliminating any chance of wasted material significantly reduces operating costs
