Giovanni Antonio Bertoli (sic Bertali) (March 1605
-
L7 Aprrl, 1669)
was an ltalian composer and violinist of the Baroque era. <

the age of 59 in I 664.
He was born in Yerona and received early music education there from Stefano Bernardi. Probably from 1.624, he was employed as court musician in Vienna by Emperor Ferdinand IL In 1649, Bertoli succeeded Giovanni Valentini as court l@pellmeister. He died in Vienna in 1669 and was succeeded in his post by Giovanni Felice Sances.
Bertoli's compositions are in the manner of other northern ltalian composers of the time and include opera\ oratorios, a large namber of liturgrcal works, and chamber music. His operas are notable for establishing the tradition of ltalian opera seria rn Vienna. Approximately half of his output is now lost; copies survive made by Bertoli's contemporaryT Pavel Josef Vejvanovsky and some are currently in possession of Vienna's Hofbibliothek, the llbrary of the Kremsmiinster Abbey, and the KromdiiZ archive. However, the most important source for Bertoli's work is the Viennese Distinta Specificatione catalogue, which lists several composers of the Habsburg court and proides titles and scoring for more than 2OOO compositions.
Bertoli wrote nine sonatas for bassoon and continuo, which were published by Allessandro Vincenti in Venice in 7645. Titled Compositioni Musicali di Gio. Antonio Bertoli fatte per nnare col fagotto solo, the entire publicationcanbe found in the Blbhoteca G. B. Martini in Bologna.
From the publisher ln preparing this edition of Bertoli's Sonata No. 7 (Sonata settima) several sources were studied, both
prrnt and aaral, beginning with a copy of the ortginal manuscript, which shed light on the lack of any dynamics or articulations. However, perhaps the most definitive resource was the 1969 Boston sonatas
by Joseph This TMP University lJrbinato"clean", are discussed all nrnethe performer in which artistic allowing to add tasteful in detail.and hasdissertation edition not been edited but remains arttcalattons and dynamics at his or her discretion.
In some
cases Bertoli was
very free with meter andbasically did not rndicate meter changes within the
structure of the sonata. Most of these have been rctained. Where the bassoonist may question the length of aparttcular measare or rest, keyboard cues have been providedfor clarificatron.
A few obvious misprints have been corrected without comment, and editorial accidentals are shown above the music, which are based for the most on the scholarly research done by Mr. Urbinato and others.
An optional basso part (cello or other bass instrument) is included with the edition but rt is not shown in the keyboard score. This may be used atthe option of the performer.
