Description

Scene I – Beowulf awakens [Inside the kingdom, late at night, the entire kingdom is sleeping peacefully; feeling secured now that Beowulf has defeated Grendel for good.] [A woman walks in a room and finds a lot of dead bodies sprawled on the floor. The woman shrieks in horror and it awakens Beowulf from his sleep.] Scene II – Beowulf is asked to defeat Grendel’s Mother [People gather inside the kingdom, panicking and scared because they realized that the curse is not yet over. They approach the king and bombard him with questions.] PERSON 1: Has Grendel grown a new arm and killed all of these people? PERSON 2: Who could have possible done all these murders if Grendel is already dead? PERSON 3: Was it Grendel’s brother, sister, or maybe it was just his arm! KING: (frustrated) SILENCE! The demon responsible for these deaths is not Grendel’s brother, nor sister, nor his arm. (pause) It was his mother. [People around gasp and start whispering.] KING: (approaches Beowulf) Beowulf, ever so grateful are we that you have banished Grendel from our land. Now, if I could ask of you to yet again save our skins from Grendel’s mother. BEOWULF: You only asked me to come here to defeat the demon Grendel. Why is his mother suddenly killing off your people as well? KING: Because we took away her son. BEOWULF: And if we kill the mother, what makes us sure that the rest of their family won’t take revenge as well? Like the father, where is Grendel’s father? KING: The mother is the last one of those demons. And the father… (looks guilty) the father can do no harm to man. BEOWULF: It is settled, then. I’ll defeat this mother and put an end to the curse once and for all. [People cheer and praise Beowulf.]

SCENE III – Beowulf makes a deal with Grendel’s Mother [Beowulf enters the lair; there are many skulls and bones and gold, the ground is covered in water, it is dark. Beowulf holds a torch on one hand and a sword in the other. The golden horn given to him by the king hangs around his waist. Beowulf looks around the lair, searching for the mother.] GRENDEL’S MOTHER: I see you have come to visit. BEOWULF: (spins around, prepared to fight) Show yourself! [Grendel’s mother slowly emerges and lightens up the dark lair. She is covered in gold. It distracts Beowulf.] [Beowulf is in awe because Grendel’s mother is illegally hot. He is distracted and looks like he forgot what he came in that lair to do.] GRENDEL’S MOTHER: (in a dark, sexy voice) Are you the one they call Beowulf? [Beowulf gives a small nod; jaw still dropped.] GRENDEL’S MOTHER: (walks around Beowulf in circles) A man like you is great and powerful. Your story will live on for years while everything else fades away and turns to dust. [Beowulf still has his sword raised up high; Grendel’s mother lowers it down and brings herself closer to Beowulf.] GRENDEL’S MOTHER: It has been a looong time since a man has visited me. Beowulf, you took a son away from me, hence give me a son. Be with me. [She spots the golden horn hanging around Beowulf’s waist. She slowly takes it from him.] GRENDEL’S MOTHER: If you stay with me, I will give you riches. You shall be the greatest king that ever lived. You will remain almighty and powerful… as long as this horn remains with me inside this lair. [Beowulf surrenders to Grendel’s mother]

SCENE IV – Beowulf returns to the kingdom

SCENE V – Beowulf becomes king

[Inside the kingdom, people wait anxiously for whether or not Beowulf would return. People keep pacing around, fumbling awkwardly, etc.]

[King walks away from his conversation with Beowulf. He walks back to the people and calls for their attention.]

[Beowulf walks in panting heavily, looking exhausted.]

[Everyone listens to the king attentively.]

[People suddenly burst into cheers and gather around Beowulf and repeatedly shout, “Beowulf lives!”] PERSON 4: Beowulf! Beowulf! How did you defeat Grendel’s mother, the water witch? BEOWULF: (tells the story animatedly/ a lot of actions and gestures) So I was walking around the lair and Grendel’s mother suddenly lunges in front of me. She grabs me by the throat and throws me to the wall. I thought I was going to pass out. I got up and picked up my sword and stabbed it squarely in her chest and then tore her head off.

KING: As you all may know, I have no heir. I have no sons. Therefore, I shall henceforth leave my kingdom, my riches, my people, my crown, my queen, my everything, with Beowulf. [Some people applaud; some people begin to protest and disagree.] KING: I HAVE SPOKEN! [King takes off his crown and throws it in the air before walking out. Someone catches the crown. King grabs a knife/ sword and stabs himself.] [Queen shrieks “NOOO!” and everyone is in shock.]

[People gasp and gawk in amazement.] [King and queen walk in.]

[The entire kingdom then realizes that Beowulf is now their new king. The person holding the crown crowns Beowulf.]

KING: Beowulf, may I have a word with you? [Beowulf separates from the people and approaches the king, trying too hard to look confident and innocent.]

PEOPLE: (taking a step back and then getting down on their knees; faces still in shock) All hail King Beowulf. All hail King Beowulf. SCENE VI – Beowulf’s horn is found

KING: Did you kill her? BEOWULF: (sounding defensive) What d’you mean? Would you like to hear the entire story? I was just telling the people how— KING: (slowly and firmly) Did you kill her? BEOWULF: (long awkward pause) If I had escaped her, that could only mean I had defeated her… KING: (sighs; shrugs shoulders; does not entirely believe Beowulf) She’s not my curse anymore. By the way, where is the golden horn? BEOWULF: (panics and comes up with something quickly) Uh, I must have dropped it while finishing off Grendel’s Mother. KING: (doubtful) Hmm… Well, as I said, she is not my curse anymore.

[The people at the kingdom are having a party. Suddenly a slave enters holding the golden horn.] [Beowulf spots him and demands answers from him.] BEOWULF: (picks up the horn) Where did you get this? SLAVE: (terrified) Outside the kingdom. I’m sorry Your Majesty, I was going to return it, I swear. BEOWULF: Is that all? No demon? No witch? SLAVE: (slowly shakes head) END
