Introduction Beep 4 Teacher’s Resource Book offers information and tips to help you get the most out of the complete selection of teacher’s materials. It also contains additional photocopiable resources to help encourage and support the children’s learning. There are eight different sections, with graded areas to ensure that all levels of the class advance. Weaker students will gain from the extra support and stronger students will have further resources to stimulate their learning.

Language

Using the sections Beep optional worksheets can be photocopied according to the needs of individual children or the class as a whole.

Newcomers

There are suggestions on when each activity should be done in the Teacher’s Book to assure that the content and vocabulary have been covered in the lesson. There are eight sections. • • • • • • • •

Language worksheets, at three levels Newcomers worksheets Phonics worksheets Communicative activities Reader worksheets Reading and Writing worksheets Tests DVD worksheets

Tips • Get enough photocopies of the worksheets in advance with a couple of spare copies just in case. • Keep a copy for yourself to mark on any comments about how the children found the activity. • Reinforcement worksheets are useful for children struggling with the level of the Student’s Book. They can be given as a homework activity. • Extension worksheets can be used for fast finishers, for a more advanced study of the level, or given as a homework activity.

The Language section includes three worksheets for each unit: Reinforcement, for children below the level of the class, Consolidation, for children at the level of the class, and Extension, for children above the level of the class. The worksheets are similar, but the level of difficulty varies. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at the end of the book.

The Newcomers section provides topic based worksheets that are designed to be used by children joining the class at different times of the year. They provide basic vocabulary activities that will help the integration of children who are new to the class. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at the end of the book. Phonics The Phonics section provides one worksheet per unit. These are designed to be used after lesson 7, alongside the Tongue Twister and Beep poster. As they work through the Phonics worksheets, the phonemes and graphemes are repeated throughout, allowing the children to become familiar with them. Phonics is a very useful tool to focus on pronunciation and spelling difficulties. An early exposure to the sounds of English should prevent greater difficulties with understanding and pronunciation at a later stage. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at the end of the book. Communicative activities This section encourages the participation of all the students. The fun activities and games give plenty of opportunities for speaking and interaction among the children, including those who are more reluctant to speak.

Reader The Reader worksheets are designed to be used with Beep 5 Reader. The Reader worksheets fully exploit the section, making the most out of the children’s enjoyment of the story. Answers are provided at the end of the book. Reading and writing The Reading and writing section consists of worksheets based on the activity types found in the Young Learner Exams, but using the vocabulary found in every unit of the Student’s Book. Answer keys for all the worksheets are provided at the end of the book. Tests The Test section includes a Diagnostic test to be carried out at the beginning of the year, a two page test per unit and a four page, End of year test. The tests include a variety of activities so that all children, whatever their particular strength or weakness, have an equal opportunity to do well in the tests. Lesson plans for testing are provided in the Evaluation lesson at the end of each unit in the Teacher’s Book. There is one listening activity included in each test, this is recorded on the Class audio and the script is provided in the Teacher’s Book. Answer keys for all the tests are provided at the end of the book.

language in a meaningful context. The story also helps students to develop their understanding of narrative elements; such as sequencing, visual literacy, and plot and character development. The worksheets which you can find in a photocopiable format in this Teacher’s Resource Book are also available onscreen in the DVD. The Real Kids section consists of three video extracts thematically linked to the material covered in each term in the Student’s book. The extracts are taken from authentic situations and feature native English speakers. They can be watched with or without subtitles. This type of communication, in which other cultural and social elements come into play, is an effective way to stimulate interest in learning. Both worksheets and transcripts for this area are provided. Note: Both the Animated story and the Real Kids section can be played with subtitles for reading practice. Depending on the level and confidence of your class you may like to play short excerpts from the DVDs, once witho ut the subtitles (this is especially challenging for the stronger students), then with subtitles for better understanding and finally again without the subtitles. The last time can be particularly satisfying for children as they become familiar with the sounds of English, helped by the visual references of the DVD. Other resources

Flashcards

Beep 5 DVD is an entertaining teaching resource with two main sections.

Flashcards are an excellent classroom tool to help introduce, reinforce and review vocabulary. Beep comes with a pack of 63 full colour flashcards illustrating key vocabulary. Instructions for using the flashcards are given in the teaching notes for each lesson.

Pedro’s project is an animated short story containing the key vocabulary and structures from Beep 5. Throughout the Beep series, stories have been a main focus. The appealing characters and plot in Pedro’s project, which make use of humour and dramatic tension, reinforce the positive experience of learning English. The story acts as a vehicle for revisiting core unit language and provides an opportunity to encounter the

Each picture flashcard has a corresponding word card which can be used to help develop children’s reading skills, to assist in writing activities and to use in matching activities.

The Beep flashcards can also be used in a variety of games which are explained in the Teacher’s Book. Children learn best when they enjoy what they are doing and games provide a way to engage children’s interest and enthusiasm. Games offer valuable opportunities to use the language for real purposes and provide enjoyable occasions for repeating and reinforcing the language, supporting retention and recall. Games which incorporate active methodology, using physical response are ideal for assimilating language.

Use the cards to: • Tell the story before, during or after listening. • Ask children to predict what might happen in the story. • Practise questions and answers. • Introduce and practise vocabulary. • Practise temporal sequencing of a story. • Describe a scene. • Develop reading and literacy skills.

Posters

All the Beep digital components include a complete User’s guide, accessible from the main menu screen. They run on Windows, Linux and MAC operating systems and are compatible with all interactive whiteboard (IWB) software. Open the readme.txt file in each CD for minimum requirements and instructions. The Beep i-solutions pack includes two CD-ROMs: • Beep i-book • Activity Generator

There are a total of eight double-sided posters for permanent use in the classroom. The double-sided posters include the key vocabulary of each unit in large, colourful illustrations and a tongue twister which allows you and the children to focus on pronunciation and phonics. There are more general reviews and activities on eight of the poster faces, which complete the set. The Teacher’s Book gives full instructions of when and how to use the posters. Tips • Put two nails or drawing pins on the wall or in the wood of the blackboard and hang up the poster using two bulldog clips to avoid damage and the mess of Blu-Tack or adhesive tape. The poster is easily displayed and reversed. • Hang the posters at the height of the children so that they can easily see them and participate in the activities. Story cards Storytelling is very much part of the primary curriculum and Beep provides an entertaining story in each unit. Beep resources include a pack of 64 full colour story cards – 8 per story. On one side, the story cards have an enlarged version of the illustrations for each story in the Student’s Book and the text for that part of the story on the reverse.

i-solutions pack

How to use the i-solutions pack 1) Beep i-book The Beep Teacher’s i-book is the digital version of the Beep course, which integrates all the teaching materials into one single format. This fully interactive resource provides teachers with alternative and innovative ways to approach the Beep course content. It can be used in two different ways: as an interactive guide to prepare lessons, and in class with an interactive whiteboard (IWB). The Beep Teacher’s i-book contains the Student’s Book, the Activity Book, the Teacher’s Book, the Teacher’s Resource Book, the Grammar Booklet and the Beep Reader as well as i-flashcards, i-posters, i-story cards plus extra interactive activities which provide thorough practice of the course content. Audio material and teacher’s notes for all the teaching materials are also included. How to use the Beep Teacher’s i-book on an interactive whiteboard (IWB) The Beep Teacher’s i-book is very user-friendly. Using the i-book in class is a wonderful way to

focus the children’s attention on the specific content you wish to work with, since what they see on the IWB is also in their books.

• Children can listen and read at the same time using the controls in the transcript window.

Follow these simple steps to work with the course materials in class: 1. Click on the book you want to use. 2. Click on the unit. 3. Click on the task to enlarge it in a new window. Access all the resources you may need to complete the task, such as answer keys, audio, audio transcripts, previous information from other tasks, etc., using the links at the top of the window. You can make these windows bigger or smaller by clicking on the bottom right-hand corner and dragging. 4. To close the window and return to a full-page view, click on CLOSE on the top right-hand corner. 5. Use the bottom menu to open other books. 6. You can minimize the i-book to work with other digital resources you may have in your computer.

Images and pictures in the i-book All the images and pictures in the i-book can be enlarged. This is a fantastic feature of the Beep Teacher’s i-book and you can use it to maximize opportunities for developing children’s oral skills.

Direct links to other books, sections or pages Throughout the i-book there are various coloured links which lead to corresponding sections in other components of the course. Pink: these links take you to the Student’s Book. Purple: these links take you to the Activity Book. Green: these links take you to the Teacher’s Book. Orange: these links take you to the Teacher’s Resource Book. Red: these links take you to the i-posters, i-flashcards, i-story cards and i-activities for the unit. Listening activities in the i-book Not only can you hear the listening activities, you can also see them! • Tasks with a CD symbol are recorded. To listen to the audio, click on the task. A new window will open. • Use the buttons at the top of the window to play, stop, pause, rewind or fast forward the track. • The transcript button opens a new window containing the text version of the audio.

i-flashcards, i-story cards and i-posters Use the i-flashcards, i-story cards and i-posters to present content and revise key concepts throughout the unit. Alternate or combine the use of conventional flashcards, story cards and posters with the interactive ones to make your teaching more varied and to maintain the children’s attention. The interactive tools for the children are placed at a lower level on the screen to facilitate their participation with the IWB. The interactive tools for the teacher are located at the top of the screen to help you guide and control the children’s work. Encourage class interaction and develop children’s ICT skills by allowing them to use the interactive stylus to follow your instructions. i-flashcards The access to the i-flashcards for the unit is located in the corresponding Student’s Book pages. The i-flashcards can be used to practise all four language skills in a very user-friendly way. You can decide which functions to use depending on your specific needs: • Show a picture and ask the children to name it or ask them to use the interactive stylus to identify one of the pictures. All the pictures are placed at the bottom of the screen to make them easily accessible. • Click on the text button to show the written form and promote reading skills. • Click on the audio button to hear the word and practise the correct pronunciation. • Give the children the interactive stylus and ask them to write or copy the word.

i-story cards Click on the story on the Student’s Book page to access the i-story and use the numbers at the top of the window to move from one vignette to another. Click on CLOSE on the top right-hand corner to return to a full-page view.

How to manage your teaching sessions The Richmond i-books now offer the possibility of saving all your teaching sessions. This allows you to customize your i-book for each of your classes, session by session if needed, in order to meet every class’ needs individually.

The i-story cards provide an alternative way to present the story to the whole class. You can decide whether you want to show it with or without the text. Use it without audio or without text for you, or the children, to retell the story in your own words.

You can create one or several sessions, as many as you need, export and import sessions in order to use them on different computers or edit sessions you have already created at any time! Once a session is created, you are ready to work with the i-book and customize it using the Richmond i-tools . You can insert notes, hyperlinks, or external files as well as add handwritten notes. All the information added to the i-book session will be automatically saved to your computer. You don’t need to quit the i-book to refer to different teaching sessions. Click on on the left hand side of the bottom menu to access the session registration window at any time. Access to the session registration window is only available from the main bottom menu. Once you are working with a book, this is the location to access the Richmond i-tools.

i-posters The i-posters are located on the Student’s Book pages where they can be used to present content or revise key concepts throughout the unit. The i-posters offer two interactive activities to present and to reinforce the key vocabulary from the unit in a different way. This flexible resource also permits a wide range of extra interactive activities to evaluate or to expand the course content using the IWB tools. i-activities The interactive activities from the Beep CD-ROM have been included in the Teacher’s i-book. The access to these activities is located on the Student’s pages, where they can be used to present, revise or reinforce key concepts from the unit. For more information about these interactive activities and the way to make the most of them using the IWB, please read the Beep CD-ROM section. The interactive board games in the review units can be used to revise the term core content with the whole class. Roll the interactive dice and move the counter to the corresponding square. Ask the children to answer the question. Alternatively, you can form groups and ask each group to answer taking turns. The use of the clock tool from the IWB specific tools is also a good way to make the revision more challenging for the children and it also allows them to stop and think before they answer.

The Richmond i-tools This new feature allows the teacher to enhance the i-book with their own materials. You can personalize the i-book by inserting notes, hyperlinks and external files. It is also possible to write or paint on the i-book and in the zoom windows. By using the Richmond i-tools you can easily add your own material for the classroom, or stress the important points of a unit or activity. Drawing, colouring and matching activities can be made much more fun by using the write, colour and erase tools. The Richmond i-tools are located on the bottom lefthand corner and allow two levels of personalization: • On the main pages of the i-book by adding reminders, general points or materials for your class. • On the zoom pages by including materials or explanations to enrich a particular vocabulary, grammar or culture point.

The Activity Generator provides all the graphic resources, texts and illustrations from the Teacher’s Resource Book to be rearranged and edited by the teachers to generate their own materials based on the course content. Beep CD-ROM The Beep CD-ROM is a fantastic interactive resource for both children and teachers which provides thorough practice of the Student’s Book content. It contains eight units with interactive activities covering all the main language taught in the Student’s Book. The Beep CD-ROM can be used in class with an IWB to exploit the course contents while also helping children understand the concept of working together as a team to achieve a common objective. Alternatively, it can be used on an individual level by children working alone either in the Multimedia Lab or at home, reinforcing their language learning outside the classroom.

screen. Most activities also include a final screen with animations to review the key concepts presented in each exercise. One of the activities in each unit is based on the CLIL section from the Student’s Book. The children expand their interdisciplinary knowledge through extra listening and reading comprehension activities. Each unit contains a digital version of the Beep story and a listening or reading comprehension activity. The digital story is an excellent tool to attract the children’s attention. The story runs automatically to facilitate its projection. Play and pause facilities are included. The possibility of moving to different vignettes is also available. Children can see the results for all the interactive activities they have worked with. The progress reports can also be printed and given to the teacher. The CD-ROM contains a screen to listen to all the songs from the course. Beep Student’s CD Tip to use Student’s audio material in class The Student’s CD contains audio material for CD players. The songs from the Student’s Book are organized in a block so that they can be used as background music as the children work.

The YLE and Trinity test The Cambridge Young Learner Exams are designed for children aged from seven to twelve years old. Normally, they are tested in their own school environment or an exam centre, and the exams all follow the same format. There are three levels: Starters, Movers and Flyers. In terms of grammar and lexis, the Flyers level is on par with the KET exams. The difference is that, unlike the exams for older students, children cannot fail the YLE. Every participant is given a diploma with badges in Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The badges are coloured in depending on the success of the candidate. Exams follow a very set format. The children never write on the exam papers, rather they answer on an answer sheet, usually with one word answers. They are tested in groups, except for the Speaking session, where the test is given individually. Tips • When doing the practice exams it is best to recreate similar circumstances as when the children will do the exam themselves. Allow them the same amount of time and have them practise exam techniques. • The ESOL web site has an abundance of exam tips as well as practice activities and information about the exams.

The Trinity Examinations in Spoken English are one-to-one oral examinations with a native English speaking Trinity examiner, which test a student’s speaking and listening skills. The exams provide an official recognition of a student’s level of spoken English and are accepted by universities and employers worldwide. Candidates must be aged seven or over. The examinations are divided into a series of 12 oral exams which test the student’s general conversation and ability to discuss prepared topics. The exam grades range from absolute beginner level to near native fluency. Apart from being a recognised metre of a student’s skills in English, the examination also works as a motivational tool encouraging children to practise and try to communicate in English. Tips • In each English lesson, ask general questions such as What day is it today? What’s the weather like today? Is it spring or summer? How old are you? • Encourage full answers whenever asking questions. T: What day is it today? SS: Tuesday. T: It’s Tuesday. • When asking questions, if a child does not know the answer, encourage them to say: I don’t know, I can’t remember or I’m sorry, I don’t know the word in English, rather than remaining silent or saying “err”. • Make question practice fun. Do it in the form of a team quiz and award points. • Practise for the exam in regular, short sessions so candidates become more confident with the style of question and can answer more rapidly and naturally. • When choosing a grade for candidates, consider the child’s personality as well as their level of English. A shy child with a good level of English, may not do as well as a more outgoing child who speaks more spontaneously. • Encourage the children to ask questions too. From Level 2 onwards they are expected to ask the examiner questions.

The Paralympic Games are the Olympic Games for athletes with a physical disability. They are elite sports events. About four thousand athletes from over one hundred countries compete. They are held in the same host cities as the Olympic Games: London, Sochi, and Rio, for example. The emphasis is on achievement, not on the athletes’ disabilities.

MY PET IGUANA My name is Peter and this is my pet iguana, Rosalita. Rosalita looks like a big lizard. Iguanas come from South America and Central America, I got mine in the pet shop. Iguanas are one of the most popular pet reptiles. Rosalita is a green iguana. Green iguanas are small when they are born. They weigh about 12 grams; but when they are adults, they can weigh up to 8 kilograms! Rosalita lives in an aquarium. I always give Rosalita her food at night. She eats broccoli, green beans and other vegetables. In the morning, I give her fresh water. I love my iguana. I think Rosalita is a fantastic pet! 1 What is Peter’s pet’s name? 2 Where are iguanas from? 3 How much do baby iguanas weigh? 4 How much can an adult iguana weigh? 5 Where does Rosalita live? 6 What does Rosalita eat?

HOW DO PEANUTS GROW? It is very easy to grow peanuts. You don’t need special seeds. Take some fresh peanuts and put them in water for one day. Then plant the peanuts in soil about 6 cm deep. Water them well. Don’t water them again for about ten days. Then water them once a week. The plants have flowers after 30 to 40 days. The peanuts grow underground. The peanuts are big after about 110 days. Pull the plants up carefully. If the peanuts have red skins, they are ready. Then you need to dry them for a week in a sunny area. 1 How long do you put peanuts in water before planting them? 2 After planting, how many days do you wait before you water the peanuts again? 3 Then, how often do peanut plants need water?

WE LOVE BOOKS Reading is a good way to learn about the world. Very young children like books with simple stories and lots of pictures. Fairy tales, like Snow White or Cinderella, are very popular. When children begin to read, they usually like simple books with easy words like The Cat in the Hat or Matilda. Older children like books about other children, for example the Harry Potter series or James and the Giant Peach. Some children really like information books such as books about dinosaurs or space. There are many kinds of books: comic books, joke books, novels and information books. Reading is fun! 1 What books do very young children like?

TWO VERY DIFFERENT COUNTRIES Ireland is a country in Europe. It is an island. It is separated from Great Britain by the Irish Sea. The Atlantic Ocean is to the west. The capital city is Dublin. The highest mountain in Ireland is Carrauntoohil, which is 1,038 metres high. The longest river is the River Shannon. It is 386 kilometres long. Ireland has a mild climate and it rains a lot. It is a very green country. Mexico is a country in North America. The Gulf of Mexico is to the east, and the United States is to the north. The capital is Mexico City. The highest mountain is Pico de Orizaba, which is 5,636 metres high. The longest river is the Rio Grande. It is 3,058 kilometres long. I was at the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London last year with my parents. It was fantastic. You can see Holmes and Watson’s office and take a photo there. TURTLE ISLAND, BALI Turtle Island is in the south of Bali, Indonesia. It is a very small island covered in white sand. The Turtle Conservation and Education Centre (TCEC) is here. To get to Turtle Island, you travel from the mainland in a glass bottomed boat. When you look down, you can see all the exotic underwater life. At the Turtle Conservation and Education Centre, there are tiny houses, called hatcheries, where the turtle eggs are buried in the sand. When the baby turtles are born, they are put into pools. The baby turtles are released into the sea two weeks later, and visitors to the island can go and watch this process.

Interesting Jellyfish Facts When we are at the beach we don’t like to see jellyfish because they can give you a very nasty sting. But jellyfish are very interesting creatures. They haven’t got a brain, a heart or bones. Some jellyfish have ways of detecting obstacles but do not have real eyes. A jellyfish’s body is 95% water. They eat plankton and small fish. They use the stingers on their tentacles to kill their prey. 1 Jellyfish can sting you.

Bat Facts Bats are mammals. They are the only mammals that can fly.

2.45

There are nearly 1,000 species of bats in the world. Bats eat fruit and insects and are a natural form of insect control. Bats generally live in caves or under bridges. They use echolocation to help them fly in the dark. Bats make sounds as they fly through caves. These sounds echo from the cave walls. The bats hear the echo and this helps them to find their way. The biggest bat in the world is called the flying fox (or fruit bat). They have a wingspan of 152 cm. They live on the islands of the Malay Indonesia archipelago.

A great day out This summer I was at the Terra Mitica Theme Park with my mum and dad. Terra Mitica is in Benidorm, Spain. It has five ancient themes from – Egypt, Rome, Greece, Iberia and the Mediterranean Islands. There are a lot of rides and shows. The Syncope is a ride in the Greek area, it’s great. The Magnus Colosus is a rollercoaster in the Roman area. You can see gladiators fight too. There is also a pirate ship on a river. When you want something to eat you can go to a restaurant like Via Apia, which has got pizzas and Italian food. ‘El Pincho’ has got fast food. It is a great day out for all the family. 1 Where is Terra Mitica? © Santillana Educación S.L., 2012 PHOTOCOPIABLE

Tim: Pedro, you are on my team. Narrator: Pedro plays very well, but Luke’s team doesn’t. Luke is angry. Pedro: Ooouf! Tina: Oh no! Pedro: Ohhh... Tim: Pedro? Are you OK? Luke: He’s fine. Let’s play. Narrator: In the morning… Pedro: What do you like? Tim: I like experiments. My mum is a scientist. Pedro: Wow. My mum is a gardener. Pedro: What’s this? Tim: Oh! It’s a competition. Luke always wins. Pedro: Hmmm… Miss Penn: Class, please think about the science project. Pedro: Er… can I do a project about the Amazon? Miss Penn: Of course, that’s a great idea! Luke: That’s silly... Narrator: Everybody is working on the science project. Tim: What’s the Amazon jungle? Pedro: It’s a rainforest. It’s in danger. Tina: What’s the problem? Pedro: They are cutting down all the trees! Tim: What can we do? Narrator: It’s lunch time. Tina: We have to help the Amazon.

Pedro: Well, every day the Amazon jungle is smaller and smaller… Tim: We want to plant a mini Amazon in the school. Tina: And then everyone can see how beautiful the trees are! Luke: That’s silly! Bobby: Good, you can win the competition again! Miss Penn: Where can you plant the trees? Pedro: I don’t know. Amazon trees need to be warm. Miss Penn: Great! What other projects are there? Luke: My project is a secret. Narrator: Pedro and his new friends go to his house. Tina: Wow... these plants are beautiful! Pedro: They are my mum’s plants. They are from the Amazon! Tim: The plants like the kitchen. Pedro: Yes, it’s nice and warm. Tina: Nice and warm? My mum works in the school kitchen, and it’s… All: Nice and warm! Luke: Look, it’s the tree people, ha, ha! Bobby: You can’t win the competition! Pedro: Why not? Luke and Bobby: Oh, what beautiful plants… Narrator: They start their project. Tina: My mum says we can plant here. Pedro: OK, I’ve got some little plants from my mum. Tim: And I’ve got some big pots from my mum. Pedro: What…? Tim: I’m scared. Tim: Aaaah! Tina’s mum: What are you two doing? Bobby: Nothing. Luke: Nothing at all. Tina: Luke and Bobby want to stop our project. Pedro: We need to hide the plants!

DVD script Real Kids DVD term 1 Laura: Hello, I’m Laura and this is Moorlands Farm. The kitchen is the busiest place in the house, especially in the mornings. There are five of us living on the farm: my mum and dad, my brother William, and my little sister, Emily. Moorland’s Farm is 1,100 feet above sea level, on Dartmoor in Devon. I often help Dad on the farm. These lambs were born two months ago. And every morning before I go to school I come out and feed them. That one’s Rory and that one’s Benji. My favourite is Benji because he’s really sweet. Our main produce on the farm is sheep. And because the sheep are spread over a wide area, we need to have sheep dogs to help gather them in. We’ve got four on the farm. There’s Jep, Bell, and Gayle, and Ben who hasn’t been very well but he’s getting better. After breakfast, Dad gets on with his work and me and William set off for school. My school is Princetown Primary in Princetown, which is about three to four miles away. Each morning, I walk from my house, down the lane to the bridge, where the school bus picks up me and William. The bus comes to pick us up at half past eight. We then pick up Sam and Harry who live on the next farm which is about two miles away. We get to school by ten to nine. Sometimes in the winter when there’s lots of snow, the minibus isn’t able to come and get us. Last February I had three days off school! There are 113 children in our school and they come from a 10 mile radius. We don’t travel the furthest but we do live in one of the most isolated areas.

DVD script Real Kids DVD term 2 Grandad: Right. We’re off to the mountains. Boy: I enjoy going to the mountains to ski, but to look at animals... nothing lives there. Grandad: What do you mean nothing lives there? Just have a look: birds of prey, goats, foxes, hares, mouflons, llamas... Now, let’s travel across mountain ranges around the world. Boy: It looks scary there. What’s that? It’s got a tail. Grandad: That looks like a snow leopard. They live high in the mountains and it’s lying in wait for the mountain goats. Boy: I think that one has noticed! Grandad: All the animals in the mountains have thick, shaggy fur to keep warm. Here’s a llama again. Llamas are used to the cold and snow. People use their wavy fur to weave warm jumpers. Boy: Wow! A real avalanche! Grandad: That’s what happens in the mountains. The mountains are dangerous because the weather can change very quickly. What beautiful flowers! Boy: Are there ponds in the mountains, Grandpa? Grandad: No, but there are mountain lakes formed by melting ice flows during the summer. Boy: They look like cows. Grandad: They’re called yaks. Boy: That little one is having a drink of milk. Boy: That little red bird is the same colour as the flowers we saw earlier. Grandad: Up here it’s beautiful, but down in the valley, the clouds are forming. Boy: There’s a newborn llama! That animal isn’t afraid of heights. Grandad: Those are mountain goats. Boy: Really? Grandpa, did you know that I’m a goat too? Grandad: Don’t make things up. Boy: No, my star sign is Capricorn... the goat. Grandad: This is a continental glacier. It flows at a rate of several metres per day. Boy: Per day? You can’t even see it moving. Grandad: Well, it hardly moves at all.

Grandad: Oh, if I were younger, I’d learn how to fly a glider so that I could sail through the air like that bird of prey. Soon it will be dark. All the animals will be going undercover. This mountain goat has to go slowly so it doesn’t slip. Boy: Don’t worry, Grandpa. Look, they can run really fast. Grandad: Well, I don’t mind as long as I don’t have to join them. Boy: It’s amazing how fast they can run on those rocks. Grandad: It looks like there will be a snowstorm during the night. All the animals are crawling into their dens, burrows, or lairs. Anywhere to keep out of the wind. So, it’s best we get somewhere safe too. Boy: Look at that mountain goat. He looks like he’s keeping guard. Grandad: I’ll be on guard, too. Just like he is. If there are any avalanches, or if a bear should come by, I’ll let you know. Come along you little mountain goat, off to bed!

DVD script Real Kids DVD term 3 Narrator: What do you think this well-known coastal land form is? As you can see, the rock has been subject to an immense amount of erosive energy, causing these step-like formations. It was a cave. Let’s look a little closer at the way in which they’re formed. As you can see here, the waves slowly erode material from the bottom of the cliff. This causes a crack, or fissure, to occur as the cliff becomes unstable. Slowly, as more and more material is eroded away from the base of the cliff, the crack opens up into a cave. As you can see here, large amounts of material have to be eroded away to form one of these structures. So it takes a succession of storm events and destructive waves to cause this sort of feature. Although caves can occur in any cliff face, the next feature that we are going to look at only occurs within a headland, a seam of resistant rock that juts out into the sea. Here, a cave forms as we’ve already seen, but as it’s on a headland, it can further develop into an arch as it cuts completely through the rock. From here, the waves continue to erode the arch, and this causes the top to become unstable and eventually, this falls and you end up with a cliff, and then a stack shown here on the right. However, this is not the end of the process, as from here, the erosive energy of the waves are concentrated at the base of the stack and soon this too becomes unstable and the stack will topple to form a stump.
