Have it replaced or repaired by qualified personnel  Employer is responsible safe condition of tools  Employee is responsible for proper use and maintenance of tools

Other Concerns  Housekeeping  First Aid  Electrical Hazards  Machine Guarding  Lighting  Proper Clothing  Training

Housekeeping  Keep work area clean and tidy  Store equipment neat and in proper places  Clean area after job is done

Tools Placed in Appropriate Areas

First Aid

 Know location of First Aid Kits  Know location of Eye Wash Stations  Call EMS if needed

Electrical Hazards  Only qualified Electricians should be used for electrical circuit repairs  Make sure you are using circuit breaker equipped outlets  Use ground fault indicator outlets (GFI) in wet areas  Make sure extension cords are rated for job  Inspect cords for bad spots before power is applied discard if suspect  Make sure cords have grounds

Machine Guarding  Use only approved Manufacturer’s guards  Guards must be in place at all times during use  Use LOTO if equipment needed repairs

Lighting  Make sure you have adequate lighting for the area in which you are working  Add lighting if needed  Adjust lighting to not block vision

Proper Clothing  Wear protective clothing  No loose clothing  Do not wear jewelry or rings  Secure your hair, if it is long  Wear steel toes  Wear safety glasses and face shields  Have proper ventilation

Power Tools Greatest Risk is improper use Four Types of Power Tools:  Electric  Pneumatic  Liquid Filled  Hydraulic

Power Tools: General Precautions Never carry by the cord or hose Never yank the cord or hose to disconnect Keep cords away from heat, oil, water and sharp edges Always disconnect when not in use. Always use LOTO when doing maintenance or repairs Keep observers away while in use Avoid accidental starting by keeping fingers away from trigger while carrying and connected to power source Be sure to maintain your balance when using Wear proper apparel and PPE Damaged Power tools should be taken out of service immediately

Electric Power Tools The Greatest Risk is Electrocution  Burns and Shock – Shock Can lead to heart attack  If working on ladders falls may be imminent Things you can do to prevent shocks and general practices:  Always use three wire extension cords with grounds  Use double insulated cords(insulation on wires and outer insulating jacket)  Make sure ground is constant to the power source(don’t use another cord or adapter without a ground)  Inspect cords for cuts or frays before power is added  Use GFI outlets  Always operate within design limits  Wear proper PPE  When not in use, store in dry place  Do not use in damp or wet locations  May sure areas are well lit  Never use unless trained on equipment

Power Tools: Safety Switches Momentary “on-off” Control Switch Trigger with lock, but must provide turn off by a single motion of the same finger Examples of tools: Drills, Tappers, Fastener Drivers, Grinders, Disc and Belt Sanders and Reciprocating Saws Positive “on-off” Control Switch Trigger that is shut off when pressure is released(no lock) Examples of tools: Platen Sanders, Disc Sanders, Routers, Planers, Laminate Trimmers, Nibblers, Shears, Scroll Saws and some Jigsaws

Pneumatic Tools Air Powered Tools Precautions and Dangers:  Getting hit by one of the tool’s attachments or by some kind of fastener used in combination  Watch out for noise hazards  Check that air hose does not become disconnected(have locking mechanism to hold air source in place  Set up screens to protect near by workers when in use  Always wear safety glasses and face shield  Inspect tools before use

OSHA CFR 29: 1910 subpart P Hand Tools  Greatest hazards are misuse or improper maintenance Other Hazards:  Broken or split wooden handles on hammers (head flies off)  Mushroomed heads on chisels, wedges and pins (sharp fragments) Dull tools are more dangerous than sharp ones Replace broken or worn tools asap.
