B A P T I S T H Y M N A L is the work of a committee of thirty-seven men and women from all sections of the Southern Baptist Convention. From the beginning it was determined that the committee would compile a flexible hymnbook suited to all types of churches, services, and needs of the denomination. Also, it was desired that the hymnal be designed especially for congregational singing. Genuine effort has been made to preserve the many hymns and gospel songs which have been so meaningful to the worship, education, and evangelistic activities of Southern Baptists through the years. W i t h the exception of attractive new hymns, all have become standard through successful use and the endless testing of time. Included in the hymnal are complete indexes of authors, composers, tunes, meters, topics, first lines and titles, doxologies, responses, benedictions, and a comprehensive selection of responsive readings complete with its own topical and scriptural indexes. Dates of birth and death of authors and composers have been given as well as other pertinent information. T u n e names appear on all hymns and gospel songs, many having been named for the first time in this book. Amens have been included only on the hymns where text and tune make them compatible. Convention Press acknowledges with grateful appreciation the kind co-operation of individuals and publishers who have granted permission for the use of their copyrighted hymns in Baptist Hymnal. An earnest effort has been made to ascertain the copyright status of each hymn included. Should there be any inclusions without proper permission and credit, Convention Press will upon notification, gladly make the necessary corrections in subsequent editions. Convention Press is greatly indebted to committee members for their many months of unselfish service in compiling the hymnal. Subcommittees on contents and topical index, words
and theology, tunes, and responsive readings made outstanding contributic ns and are due highest commendations. W i t h the editor serving as chairman, the committee consisted of the following: Theodore F. Adams Clifton J. Allen Warren M. Angell Claude U. Broach Herman F. Burns George W. Card Martha Moore Clancy Howard P. Colson J. Marvin Crowe William J. Fallis Allen W. Graves J. D. Grey
Forrest H. Heeren Clifford A. Holcorab T . Luther Holcorab Harold E. Ingraham W. D. Kendall Paul McCommon W. Plunkett Martin Ruth Nininger Russell Newport William J. Norton William R. Pettigrew William J. Reynolds
Fred G. Scholfield Samuel Shanko Genter L. Stephens James L. Sullivan Noble Van Ness Keith Von Hagen G. Allen West Jerome O. Williams John H. Williams Loren R. Williams J. Campbell Wray Kyle M. Yates
T h e editor is particularly indebted to Loren R. Williams, William J. Reynolds, Novella D. Preston, and Alta C. Faircloth, who have comprised his editorial staff and who have contributed immeasurably to many editorial phases of the book. W. H I N E S SIMS, Secretary

PREFACE C H R I S T I A N I T Y has progressed on wings of song from the birth of Christ to our day. In every service of worship great congregational singing plays a vital part. This singing of hymns is a Christian privilege given to every redeemed soul. T h e Scriptures admonish all believers to sing "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your hearts to the Lord." Each worshiper, as he sings "with the spirit, and . . . with the understanding," actively participates in the services. H e feels the unifying influence of music. His heart is attuned to God and his purposes for human life through hymns of praise, adoration, prayer, consecration, and testimony. Each Christian can express the inmost feelings of his soul through the singing of hymns. Authors and composers have left us a rich heritage of hymnody. In this music we find expressed every feeling and emotion, every truth and doctrine of our Christian faith. As we sing, we not only express what is in our hearts, but we grow in Christian character and are strengthened in our faith. Convention Press sends forth the Baptist Hymnal as a hymnbook designed especially for congregational singing. It is our prayer that through the choice hymns and gospel songs found in this book great and spirited singing may become the standard of every church, and that, as he sings, every person may be lifted to a closer walk with the Saviour at whose birth the angels sang.
