GOD WAS IN CHRIST: An Essay on Incarnation and Atonement by D. M. BAILLIE, 0.0.
Late Professor of Systematic Theology in the University of St. Andrews
This book is an important essay in Christology for the present times. A generation ago, the theological emphasis was upon the human figure of the rediscovered Jesus of history. Our generation has seen a strong reaction, caused partly by the return to dogma, partly by the emergence of Form Criticism, which has tended to shift the interest from the historical figure to the reconstruction of the apostolic message. The author, arguing that we must maintain both positions, treats the problem of Incarnation and Atonement in the special form which it has assumed in the middle of the twentieth century. The argument leads to a consideration of theological questions of peculiar moment for our time ; and it is directed both to the theologian and to the typical 'modern man'. It culminates in the confession of the Church that' God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself'. 'One of the wisest and most refreshingly sane theological books of recent years . . . .
