Ba Zi notes from Yap -

Destiny does not mean predestination. It is more like cards that you have but it’s up to you how you play. There are two systems in Chinese Astrology for determining one’s destiny code – BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu (purple star astrology). Both are equally great. Two steps – we need to find the code, and then decode it. BaZi refers to 8 characters arranged in 4 pillars (Si Zhu). The four pillars consist of four JIA ZI – four pairings of heavenly stems and earthly branches. These describe person’s character, nature, and life path with great accuracy. One can use this information to overcome weaknesses, and maximize potential, as well as make timely decisions. Every person is affected by certain energies at their birth. We can track them and track their changes during the lifetime. We can forecast a pattern. BaZi is not fortune telling, it is understanding oneself and external factors in order to make better decisions. BaZi is like a guide for better life. BaZi chart top row – heavenly stems, bottom row – earthly branches. A good chart will have good balance and harmonious coexistence of 5 ELEMENTS. A bad chart will have conflicts and disharmony among ELEMENTS. Heavenly Stems relate to person’s surface Qi – to the perceptible qualities such as character and personality as can be perceived by others. E.g. if a Wealth Element appears among the stems, this person will like to show others that he is wealthy = showing off. Driving a mercedes. On the other hand, if the wealth element is in the Earthly branch line, the person will drive a humble car and not show off their wealth. Low profile and modesty.

The stems are the positive and negative aspects of the five elements. It helps to visualize lements, for later analysis. Learn to think in pictures. o Yang Wood – a large solid tree, unyielding and hard o Yin Wood – leaves, flowers, small bushes, grass. Flexible and malleable. o Yang Fire – the Sun, bright, vibrant, life-giving, brightness to the world o Yin Fire – candle fire, small, but illuminating in the darkness o Yang Earth – large stones, solid, heavy, unmoving. o Yin Earth – soil, sand, soft earth. Fine and porous. o Yang Metal – raw iron or axe. Hard, tough, unfinished. o Yin Metal – fine jewelry, necklaces, rings. Shiny, sparkling, glamorous. o Yang Water – ocean water, lake, powerful river. o Yin Water – rain clouds, mist, dew, frost.

Earthly Branches also represent the positive and negative aspects of the elements. The animals are just representations of that. Do not htink that the associated animals represent certain personal traits! The Earthly branches represent the deep roots, the fundamentals that keep the tree stable. The heavenly stems show the surface Qi, like the appearance of a tree – but what really gives it life and makes it stable is the roots. So: branches – less obvious but carry more strength, Stems more obvious but less strength. The branches play a more important role because they also carry the force of time, represent the seasons, and tell the strength of the elements. A clash in the branches is more severe than a clash in the stems. o Tb note correlate with what you learned – do not look at the obvious – look at what is not seen. A pillar consists of heavenly stem and earthly branch – and should be sturdy like a strong tree. Their elements should be harmonious with each other. Otherwise Qi will not flow well (between heaven and earth).

PLOTTING THE CHART -

We need to convert gregorian (western) date into Chinese (solar) date of birth. The best reference guide is the book Ten Thousand Year Calendar. Lunar calendar is the reference for chinese festivals and New Year. Solar Calendar runs parallel to it, and is used for many important Feng Shui and Ba Zi calculations. The two calendars together form Farmer’s Calendar, Nong Li. Solar Calendar – February 4th is the New Year every year. No leap months, no missing months.
