Interpupillary Scale Knurled Adapter Ring Diopter Scale Eye lens Cover

The friction necessary to maintain the proper interpupillary distance (distance between the eyes) is created by special grease lubricant on the hinge pin. Once this distance is set for your eye spacing, the reading on the interpupillary scale (5) can be noted for future reference. By rotating the knurled adapter ring (6) of the eyepieces, you can focus each telescope to accommodate your particular optical characteristics. The reading on each diopter scale (7) should then be noted for future reference. The eye lens cover (8) should be placed over the eyepieces when the M22 binocular is not in use.

Each telescope is comprised of eyecups (1), a housing assembly (2 or 3) and objective covers (4). These assemblies are optically prealigned at the factory and must not be disassembled. 2

LASER PROTECTION FILTERS

WARNING

Use of a M22 binocular with a faulty coated lens may result in irreparable eye damage if laser light is viewed through the M22 binocular.

The M22 binocular is provided with laser protection filters as indicated by the label located around the spindle. The laser protective coating is contained on the surfaces of the lens located behind the M22 binocular objective lens. If this lens is lost or damaged, the M22 binocular is considered nonoperational and must be turned in. Under the special conditions when direct sunlight enters the M22 binocular, a portion of this light

will be reflected back, producing a sun glint which may be detectable at positions in the general target field. 4

HANDLING PRECAUTIONS DO'S

Handle the M22 binocular with care. Dropping or jarring the M22 binocular can damage or misalign the optics. Use the carrying strap to protect against accidental dropping of the M22 binocular. Keep the M22 binocular as clean and dry as possible and always store in clean, dry place when not actually in use. Follow the instructions outlined in this TM to obtain the best possible usage and service from the M22 binocular.

DON'TS

Do not use a dry cloth to clean the glass surfaces of the M22 binocular. Specific cleaning instructions are given on page 13. Do not attempt to open or close the M22 binocular beyond its stop limits, as this may damage internal and external parts. Do not unnecessarily expose the M22 binocular to severe weather elements. Special precautions are noted on page 11 and 12. Do not force the knurled adapter rings beyond marked diopter scale reading as this may damage internal parts.

5

HOW TO REMOVE/INSTALL NECK STRAP 1. 2.

Set carrying strap's buckles (1) and keepers (2) as shown. Insert one end of the carrying strap through the slot on the eye lens cover (3) and pass it through the slot on the M22 binocular (4).

3. Pass the carrying strap through the keeper (2) and buckle (1). 4. Repeat on the other side. Note: On right side, carrying strap passes through the M22 binoculars slot only.

6

OPERATING ADJUSTMENTS

WARNING

When using the M22 binocular, never point it directly at the sun. The heat generated by the focused rays of the sun may cause serious damage to your eyes and to the optical elements of the M22 binocular. Diopter Adjustment Each eyepiece of the M22 binocular has a diopter scale graduated from plus 4 to minus 4 in onediopter increments and can be adjusted to suit your eyesight characteristics. Rotate the knurled adapter rings (2) to obtain the sharpest focus and note the scale reading for future reference.

Interpupillary Adjustment To obtain the proper interpupillary setting for your particular eye spacing, view a distant object through the M22 binocular. Then, rotate the telescopes about the center of hinge until both circular fields of view have merged into one circle. Note the reading on the interpupillary scale (1) for future reference. 7

NORMAL OPERATION (1) (2)

(3)

(4)

(5)

(6) (7)

Place carrying strap about your neck. Remove eye lens cover by first rotating M22 binocular telescopes inward and then lifting off eye lens cover. Unsnap objective covers from front of M22 binocular and let them hang down from M22 binocular. Close the telescopes of the M22 binocular until the interpupillary index scale is at the proper setting for use (see page 7). Rotate the eyepiece adapter rings to obtain the proper diopter settings on the diopter scale (see page 7). When sighting through the M22 binocular, hold it in a comfortable and stable position. Refer to pages 11 and 12 for precautions to be observed when unusual weather or atmospheric conditions prevail. 8

USE OF RETICLE One of the telescopes of the M22 binocular includes a horizontal and vertical scale reticle graduated in 10mil increment unit markings (1 unit - 10 mils, 2 units - 20 mils, etc.).

Fire corrections can be made by viewing the impact area and determining angular corrections by use of the left or right horizontal reticle scale.

9

USE OF RETICLE (cont'd) In determining range, if an object fills one 10 mil unit marking on the horizontal reticle scale and is known to be 10 meters wide, the object is 1000 meters away. If the same size object fills two unit markings (20 mils), it would be 500 meters away. When this formula is used, the distance will be given in the same units of measurement (feet, meters, etc.) as is used in estimating the known size of the object. The same formula can be used to determine range with the vertical reticle scale when the height of an object is known. The use of the vertical scale is preferred (especially on level terrain), since objects are often viewed obliquely along the horizontal axis.

10

EXTREME COLD (1) Avoid breathing directly on the optical elements of the M22 binocular. The breath may condense and freeze. (2) Do not expose the M22 binocular to sudden and extreme temperature changes, such as carrying it directly from a well-heated area into subzero temperatures. Extreme temperature changes may cause the optical elements to crock. EXTREME HEAT (1) Do not allow the M22 binocular to lie unprotected from the direct rays of the sun. The intensified heat may damage the M22 binocular mechanisms. (2) Place the M22 binocular objective and eye lens covers on the M22 binocular before entering an air conditioned area. This will permit the binocular to cool down gradually and prevent condensation from forming. 11

OTHER EXTREME CONDITIONS Sand and Dust (1) Always keep the M22 binocular objective and eye lens covers on when not actually in use. Sand and dust will etch glass surfaces and can penetrate through the smallest openings causing damage to adjusting mechanisms. (2) Upon completion of operations, remove all particles of sand and dust from optical elements as instructed on page 13 before installing protective objective and eye lens covers. High Humidity or Salty Conditions (1) Avoid exposing the M22 binocular to direct salt spray. Salt water is extremely corrosive and can cause irreparable damage to the M22 binocular. (2) Always dry the M22 binocular thoroughly after use and immediately clean lens as instructed on page 13 and install objective and eye lens covers. 12

CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS M22 Binocular Exterior Clean the exterior of the M22 binocular (but not the lenses) with a lintfree cloth. (ltem 4, p. 18). Remove grease spots, fingerprints and other soil with soap and water and a well wrung-out cloth (Item 4, p. 18); then dry with a clean, lint-free cloth. (ltem 4, p. 18). Remove dirt and lint from objective and eye lens cover interior surfaces with a blower. (ltem 1, p.17). Optical Surfaces Blow as much dust and dirt as possible from the exposed lens surfaces. Then, using a soft brush (ltem 2, p. 17), brush across the surface with light, quick strokes, flicking the brush after each stroke to dislodge the dust it has picked up. When all visible particles of dust and dirt have been removed, moisten a piece of lens tissue (Item 5, p. 18 with lens cleaner (ltem 3, p. 18) and gently wipe over the surfaces.

13
