3. General 3.1 Connections 3.1.1 Beam connections, unless noted otherwise on design drawings, shall be one of the following types of bolted shear connections, see SES B01-F01-03, Sheet 1 and 2. a. Beam to column flange connections shall be shear plate, shop welded to the supporting column and field bolted in accordance with Detail S10 b. Beam to column web connections shall be shear plate, shop welded to the supporting column web and field bolted in accordance with Detail S11 c. Beam to beam connections shall be shear plate, shop welded to the supporting beam and field and field bolted in accordance with Detail S12 d. Beam to beam connections at fireproofed members shall be shear plate, shop welded to the supporting beam and field bolted in accordance with Detail S13 3.1.2 Bracing connections, unless noted otherwise on design drawings, shall be the appropriate detail selected from SES B01-F01-06 and shall be single shear. If required, double shear connections (DS) shall be noted on design drawings with the brace member callout, for example W10X30 (DS). 3.1.3 Gusset plates, shear plates, and stiffener plates, for example T1, T2, shall be 10 mm thick unless noted otherwise on design drawings. 3.1.4 For stiffener plate types, for example Type 1, Type 2, see SES B01-F01-01. 3.1.5 Where long slotted holes for expansion are noted on design drawings, fabricator shall furnish bolts with adequate length and threads to accommodate 2 nuts. Bolts shall be hand tightened, with nuts jammed to provide a 1 mm clearance between the nut and the connection member.

3.1.6 Structural steel members shall stop 20 mm clear from the edge of supporting member or fireproofing, as indicated on the details. 3.2 Bolting 3.2.1 All bolted connections, unless noted otherwise, shall use 20 mm diameter which comply with the requirements of ASTM A 325/A 325 M, Type 1. The following connections shall have fully tensioned (F/T) bolts installed according to the Specification for Structural Joints using ASTM A 325 or A 490 bolts, Section a.

All other member connections shall be snug tight (S/T). 3.2.2 Holes for bolts shall be 2 mm larger than the bolt diameter unless noted otherwise. 3.2.3 Unless noted otherwise on design drawings for bolted shear connections, the following number of bolt rows (R1) shall be used for the indicated beam sizes:

3.2.4 Where long slotted holes are used in an outer ply, plate washers or a continuous bar shall be provided in accordance with the AISC Specification for Structural Joints using ASTM A 325 or A 490 Bolts, Section 7(c) (6) and (7). 3.2.5 All high strength bolts for connections noted as fully tensioned (F/T) shall be designed using allowable loads for bearing connections, but shall be pretensioned in accordance with AISC ASD, Ninth Edition, Table J3.7, or LRFD, Second Edition, Table J3.1. Special inspection on fully tensioned (F/T) bolts shall not be required. 3.2.6 All high strength bolts for connections noted as slip critical (SC) shall be pretensioned in accordance with AISC ASD, Ninth Edition, Table J3.7 or LRFD, Second Edition, Table J3.1 and shall be inspected in accordance with AISC specification. 3.3 Welding 3.3.1 All fillet welds (for example, W1, W2) indicated on the standard drawings shall be AISC minimum or 6 mm whichever is larger, unless noted otherwise on design drawings. 3.3.2 Fillet welds which occur on opposite sides of a common plane shall stop one weld-size short of the corner common to both welds. 3.3.3 All groove welds shall have complete joint penetration in accordance with AWS D1.1, unless noted otherwise on design drawings. 3.3.4 For complete penetration shop welds, backing bar shall be used. Otherwise, groove welds shall be back gouged and welded from the opposite side.

3.3.5 All field welding shall be performed by AWS certified welders and shall be inspected by an AWS certified inspector. 3.3.6 For field welded connections, all beam ends shall be cut square and true (length: overcut = 0”, undercut = 6 mm maximum). 3.3.7 For complete penetration field welds, un-galvanized backing bars shall be provided in 3050 mm lengths. 3.3.8 Backing bars and run-off tabs, used in complete penetration field welding, shall not need removing. 3.3.9 Weld access holes shall be left open. 3.3.10 Ultrasonic testing (UT) shall be required on complete penetration welds only where noted on design drawings. UT inspection criteria shall follow guidelines from AWS D1.1 for structures designed for static loadings, unless noted otherwise. 3.4 Painting / Galvanizing 3.4.1 Shop shall omit paint within 50 mm of all field welded connections. Field shall mechanically remove galvanizing within 50 mm of all field welded connections. 3.4.2 Shop shall omit paint at facing surfaces of bolted connections noted as ‘slip critical’ (SC) on design drawings. Paint shall not be omitted for bolted connections noted as ‘fully tensioned’ (F/T) on design drawings. 3.4.3 When steel members are to be galvanized, the edges of tightly contacting surfaces shall be completely seal welded. 3.5 Miscellaneous 3.5.1 All dimensions shall be in millimeters, unless noted otherwise. 3.5.2 All elevations and coordinates shall be in meters, unless noted otherwise. 3.5.3 Plus (+) or minus (-) dimensions noted following member sizes in plan view are from top of steel elevation noted for overall plan. 3.5.4 Holes in structural base plates shall be 5 mm larger than the anchor bolt diameter for bolts 22 mm and smaller, and shall be 8 mm larger for bolts larger than 22 mm. 3.5.5 Fabricator shall provide safety holes in non-fireproofed beams and columns as indicated by the constructability/safety details shown on B01-F01-05
