The Empty Throne Il trono vuoto A novel that recounts the farse of politics when the party leaders are inexistent and anyone can take their place

A combination of Acciaio and Gomorra, another young talent of Italian fiction denounces her world – a Southern Italy that could be different if someone talked about it

The leader of the main opposion party, Salvatore Olivieri, fifty years old, tired out by the negative opinion polls and by some judiciary problems, decides one day to hook it: he disappears without telling anyone (not even his wife or assistant), leaving just a short note of reassurance. He anonymously travels to Paris, to Danielle, an actress with whom he had had a brief affair twenty years before, but meanwhile, in Italy, his nearest and dearest are trying to find a solution to the very serious problem that Salvatore’s disappearance has caused the party. His wife and spokesperson turn to his twin brother, Ernani, a professor of philosophy and ex-psychiatric patient. He’s the only one that could know where Salvatore is. In actual fact, Ernani provides no clues but takes over his absent brother’s position in all naturalness: he gives interviews, holds rallies, presides over meetings – and, obviously, revolutionises the party’s politicies. But this is not necessarily harmful, on the contrary...

A market: the one at Rosarno, where a thousand tensions have preceded and “warned”those who should have understood and didn’t. A hospital, also in Calabria, where various women have been abandoned in the corridor because those responsible for the stretchers had finished their shift. A factory, typical of the industrialisation of the South, full of illegalities and pollution. Crotone, a city that symbolises the whole region of Calabria, lacking in bookshops and where one of the few booksellers confuses Agota Kristof and Agatha Christie. And finally Rome, where the author studies and where she sees the protests against the condition of women in Iran, without thinking of those secret acts of violence and the inferiority declared and introjected by so many women in Southern Italy.

ROBERTO ANDò, BESIDES HIS STUDIES IN PHILOSOPHY, HAS COLLABORATED WITH SUCH GIANTS OF CINEMA AS FRANCESCO ROSI, FEDERICO FELLINI, MICHAEL CIMINO AND FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA. In Sicilian tradition the “cunti” were the fairy stories told by the elderly in the evening, with the children arranged in a circle. Modern interpreter of this tradition, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco tells the story of the life of Scipione il Cicalazadé, known in the Orient as Sinan Pascià and in the West, in his home town of Messina, as the Rinnegato (the Renegade). Captured by the Pirates of Dragut at the age of twelve, Scipione is educated at the court of the Sultan, becomes the chosen one and is, therefore, nominated Commander of the Ottoman Armies on sea and land. Midst battles, conquests, booties and glory, Sinan Pascià harbours in his heart nostalgia for his homeland, and for this reason he returns to the Long Land – Italy – in Calabria and then Sicily. At Palermo, Scipione glimpses the other half of his destiny: a lady made Moon who engraves on his heart a graft from which love will germinate. But the battle cannot wait: Scipione must hoist the sails and head towards Messina where his brother is ready to give the order to fire on him. So it’s battle – a long, crude battle between brothers. But an angry “Hooray!” salutes Scipione’s victory, and so he can make his way back up the secret heart of Sicily and return, at last, to the arms of the Lady made Moon. And live with her forever: the Wolf and the Moon is a “cunto” but it’s also a true story.

As in a piece of crime news, a disappearance, a suicide, a wealthy couple, a poor, devout, immigrant maid with psychic powers: a mysterious picture to reconstruct in order to find the culprit – if there is one....... Milagro, an immigrant who works in the house of a very wealthy couple, has disappeared. The Police investigate and, very soon, question her employers. But on arriving at the house, all they find is the body of the owner who has hanged himself for no apparent reason; on the computer screen, in the form of a farewell note, is a phrase from Genesis about Cain and Abel. The Police try to reconstruct the incident. They discover that Milagro was a tormented girl, afflicted by a sense of guilt for mysterious events that had happened to her that she did not want to confess to anyone. Her personality had intrigued Max, the man she worked for, a successful marketing director, who had taken her side when his wife criticised her, who had talked to her and realized that she talked to herself believing she was talking to someone. Shortly before his wife and son went away on holiday, Max had discovered that Milagro was even able to levitate – like a saint, or someone possessed. One evening, after following her to a mass where they listened to a sermon about Cain and Abel, which upset her, and having witnessed Milagro being attacked in a park and done nothing to help her, Max lost it. Then the tragedy: Max kills her, Max’s wife hides the corpse but the next day the man can’t stand the sense of guilt and kills himself. Rights of her previous novel Il pianista muto have been sold to: Germany (Elke Heidenreich); Russia (Text Publishers)

A Kiss

Un bacio

Leielui

A psychological thriller that is a vibrant indictment against the fear we all harbour for the Other.

Leielui (Sheandhe) is a love story. It takes place during a very hot summer in Milan, Liguria, the South of France and Vancouver, Canada. The “lei” is Clare Moletto, an American who has been living in Italy for some years and works at the call centre of a large insurance company. The “lui” is Daniel Deserti, author of the international bestseller Lo sguardo della lepre and other less successful novels. One day, in the pouring rain, Daniel, who is going through a creative crisis and is completely drunk, drives into the car in which Clare is travelling with her fiancé. The result of this potentially catastrophic incident is the birth of a relationship that goes from hostility to diffidence to curiosity to uncontrollable attraction. I wanted to relate the reasons, doubts and profound contradictions that a man and a woman are faced with when they happen to fall in love for real. The challenge was to talk about it as honestly as possible and give the same importance to both protagonists – the man and the woman. So, in alternating chapters, the story is told from both their viewpoints: the perspective changes, as do the perceptions, the sentiments involved and the questions unresolved. I think that for both male and female readers it is almost impossible not to relate to one of the two characters, and, in some cases, this may provoke a strange alternation of identification and anger. It happened to me, with “lei” and with “lui”. Andrea De Carlo

Luca, Laura, Antonio. These are the protagonists of a novel told through three voices, narrating a cruel tale of love, hate and violence. A difficult, introvert sixteen-year-old boy who arrives in a small town in the provinces. A weary, forty-year-old school mistress, who anxiously urges her students to face up to life with the courage that she herself is lacking. A young man who has grown up too fast, incapable of relating to others and educated in violence. At the centre, a gun, a shot fired at the temple in a school classroom, and perhaps a kiss. One single, simple, kiss, capable of unleashing madness. A psychological thriller, jigsaw puzzle of sentiments, dramatic account of an impossible love, constructed like a time-bomb dense with revelations, Un Bacio will conquer readers for the force of the story and a writing style capable of touching, moving and disturbing. The Great Excommunicated

Il grande scomunicato

Between comedy of errors and kitchen sink drama, the reconstruction of the lives of others, on the phone. Between apartments.

Like a modern fairy tale: in a nowhen time, in a nowhere place, there once lived twenty-four half-wits and the most wicked of dictators, the Great Excommunicated, with an infamous face and fine head: an erring clergyman of monstrous evil. He is the protagonist of this cleverly spun tale by Luca Di Fulvio. A human drama that starts off with a clear image: the pure halfwits (twelve couples, men and women in equal number) – live outside the world, in an unknown desert. It’s impossible not to feel affection for the characters of this fairy tale, with their expressive names: LaFemmina (TheFemale), Rubezia (Rubicia), Mastro Tagliabue (Master Oxcutter), Luis Veloce (Speedy Louis), Augustin della Battaglia (Augustin of the Battle). A grotesque portrait and metamorphosis. They all take action, they clash, they join forces – in the rises and falls of the events of a lifetime in an imaginary (but almost credible) State, as if in a dream. The life of the Great Excommunicated One, of course. Deus ex machina, alpha and omega, the protagonist you won’t forget and who, like it or not, resembles ourselves a little. Rights of previous novels sold to: France (Gallimard, Albin Michel, Le Club); Germany (Luebbe, Club Première); Japan (Hayakawa); the Netherlands (Karakter); Poland (Proszynski i S-ka); Russia (Azbooka); Serbia (Laguna); Spain (Grijalbo); UK (Bitter Lemon Press)

Diego Tribeca, a rootless forty-year-old who has been travelling the world for years, writing tourist guides for Lonely Planet, is obliged to return to Italy for a surgical operation. He settles into the apartment left vacant by his elder sister Sonia, who’s living in New York with her husband. Diego discovers that the house phone has an inexplicable defect – when it rings, Diego hears the conversations of the other phones in the block. Instead of getting the phone repaired, Diego starts listening to the phone calls of the other residents and gradually becomes totally hooked: he falls in love with one of them, saves another from anorexia, flees with a third after learning some disturbing secrets about his own family... Occhi di sonno ovvero I quattro canti di Palermo

Il cimitero di Praga

Four short stories set in Palermo in the early ‘80s, protagonist being a young journalist and the subject cases of Mafia and affairs of the heart.

30 years after The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco comes back with an historical novel about the intrigues of politics and the power of human intelligence. Enrolled by secret services all across Europe, a cynical falsifier weaves plots, conspiracies, intrigues, attacks, which will actually decide the historical and political course in the Old Continent. A novel on the most secret and unavowable depths of the politics of a XIX century, throwing a disturbing light on the times we live in.

DARIO FRANCESCHINI

Allegra Street

Over Again Daccapo

A Comedy about Living as a Couple. Like a Woody Allen film – the secrets, lies and paradoxes of that time-bomb mechanism that is the situation of two people who share their lives.

When a son is not at all suspicious about his father and mother’s private life. A provocative novel by Dario Franceschini

What happens when a well-to-do, respectable Italian diplomat in London, whose marriage is rather dull, suddenly, during a massage, discovers homosexual tendencies he never dreamt he had? And what happens when his equally respectable wife, Paula, falls in love with a young macho, tosses everything to the wind and runs off with him? In the London district of Montrose Place, as in the most typical Anglo-Saxon comedies, lies and secrets interweave giving life to a an amusing, bitter-sweet novel that is both funny and ruthless.

Iacopo Dalla Libera is a solicitor in a small town in the province of Mantua. He is a distinguished gentleman, known by everyone, well-to-do, married to a woman whom he does not particularly care for, with a father who was also a solicitor but is now elderly and dying. Indeed, on his death-bed, Iacopo’s father confesses to having had 52 other children with the same number of prostitutes. He explains how he always kept a count of them and sent them money for many years. Now he is asking his son to trace them so he can see them all once more before it’s too late. So begins Iacopo’s odyssey. Completely dazed, he goes to Ferrara in search of some prostitutes and, at the first address he visits, he meets the beautiful young Mila who immediately seduces him. Mila knows all about the man who sowed wild oats far and wide and she slowly leads Iacopo into a world of folly and passion that overwhelms his own family and his very wife’s identity... Everyone, it seems, has hidden secrets and one by one Iacopo discovers them. There’s no going back when you find out certain truths. A name well-known by the Italian people and media for his role in the Democratic Party (PD) A writer of quality whose books have been translated into French by Gallimard A story of passion and folly that will make both men and women readers reflect on the secrets that lie within our daily lives and on the contradictions of our respectability

Diary of Solitude

Who Writes Dies

Diario delle solitudini

Chi scrive muore

The story of a man who finds the strength to face the future in solitude and recollection. The case of a journalist who has lost almost everything for the sake of truth.

Gasping, on the brink of a never-ending explosion, day after day, lost in a vortex of hunteddown days and short, decayed breaths, in the gleaming tailspin of speeding cars their doors slamming, of assaults, prisoner inside anonymous, weightless buildings, so long, so big, perhaps inexistent, dead inside, dead before him. Disillusioned, sad, angry, lacerated, with a companion and a daughter, that’s how the writer imagines him. And inexorably caught up in the affairs of another man, chief escort – Angelo – a talking name, a livid though loyal messenger of a world to be both fought and protected, of an intimacy to live from afar and an everyday life inaccessible to the writer. The metres he walks are nothing but the corrupt dust of a condemned man, of a live man already putrified, an eagle with an instinct more in the earth than in the sky. Like Angelo after all, like the ‘Camorristi’ who persecute him, like every other nature and flesh. There’s no hope in life, only in writing. Those who read, that which is read – they are saved; the writer is not. All the rest is a trap, blackmail, persecution.

A journalist is the victim of a serious accident that leaves him permanently disfigured. To regain his equilibrium he seeks refuge in a house near a lagoon in total isolation except for the occasional company of Norberto, the person who brings his supplies. Soon the large house he is staying in begins to rouse his curiosity and, from the clues that surround him (paintings, furniture) he reconstructs the life of the inhabitants, scarred by wars and redeemed through art. In particular, he recomposes the lives of Rodolfo and Gualtiero, the former a businessman, the latter an artist – both protagonists of the most significant events of the first half of the 1900s in Italy (the war in Libya, World War I...) and short-lived but passionate love affairs. By reconstructing the lives of his predecessors in the house, the journalist also manages to recall his own recent past: the accident, the woman who was with him, the bomb that hit them while they were making a reportage.

Without Heels

The Conspiracy of the Doves

Senza tacchi A contemporary coming-of-age novel, a cross between Catcher in the Rye and The Devil wears Prada.

La cospirazione delle colombe “400 breathtaking pages: an immense and harsh portrait of contemporary society. […] With extraordinary skill, Latronico, a new Dos Passos, successfully portrays the crisis of a civilization, the brutality of finance, the verminous obsession for money, the loneliness of contemporary love.” Il Sole 24 Ore

Sofia is twenty-five. She is Milanese, the daughter of a wealthy bourgeois family, the sister of a super-intelligent, psychologically unstable fifteen-year-old (Ginevra), and has a degree in Letters. Although books are her universe, she works as a model. That way she earns a lot of money and travels between Milan, Miami and Barcellona. As she skips from one love affair to another, she tries to escape from a reality which does not satisfy her – allergic as she is to human beings – in search of a place in the sun in that glittering yet cynical world of fashion and appearances. But peace does not come, at least not in the fashion world... A merciless, moving and enthralling portrait of a young woman’s adventures in her search for herself, finding her way in a reality seeming to row against every form of self-knowledge. We struggle as hard as we can to pursue success, wealth, happiness. But what can we do when talent just isn't enough and fair play seems to lead nowhere? How many failures does it take to change a dove into a hawk? The Conspiracy of Doves follows two friends through this transformation. Alfredo Cannella is heir to a prominent Venetian real estate developer; Donka Berati is an Albanian orphan. Both Harvard dropouts, they are the best in their class at Italy’s leading business university. Alfredo’s family has made a big donation to the university; Donka is there on a scholarship. Yet they become close friends, united in their quest to get all they feel that they deserve. Their friendship grows out of their mutual successes, but their successes, in turn, start to compromise everything else. Donka, a promising scholar, soon lands on the tenure track at a prestigious business school. Alfredo enters his father’s real estate business where, after a string of cunning investments, he bribes his way to a huge government contract. Alfredo, however, ultimately finds himself on the wrong side of the deal, while Donka’s academic hopes end abruptly when his professor and mentor passes away. Still, the pair’s careers proceed, bolstered by ambition and by the reappearance of Drina, Donka’s fiancée at Harvard, and now Alfredo’s. But as the stakes rise, and morally right decisions don’t seem to work, their only chances seem to lie in the wrong ones. In his critically acclaimed second novel, 27-year-old Vincenzo Latronico masterfully summons a cast of human, complex and morally ambiguous characters, crafting a breathtaking plot around their deep passions – love, envy, ambition – and the justifications they offer for betraying those who trust them. For an elderly, self-deprecating homosexual life has a lot of surprises in store Raffaele is an ageing, gay tv and theatre actor from Foggia in South Italy who moved to Milan many years ago. One evening he gives a lift to a youth who looks like he’s going to seduce him but as soon as they get into the suburbs the boy pulls out a knife and robs him.The fear and dejection he feels when faced with such violence starts him reminiscing and brings to mind his long-forgotten friendship with Michele and the journey he made before World War II from Puglia to Berlin where he got a job as a singer in drag, in a gay club called ‘Eldorado’ together with two ‘sisters’ – Franz and Karl. One night the SS invaded the club and arrested everyone. Raffaele was sent back to Italy and the Germans, including Franz and Karl, were deported. Now, after many decades, the past seems to have caught up with him to tie up the loose ends, not only in his memory but also his life.

The novel opens in 2054 and tells the story of three women whose lives are closely intertwined: the first is Emilia, mad about dancing, exploited by the star system and then left alone with an illegitimate daughter; the second is Mrs Richter, a wealthy German widow who is renovating a large house in Italy purely for love; the third is Gemma, an elderly nun whose past is clouded by depression. In the large house the three women rediscover themselves and their serenity...

The Story of My People

You, like everything you touch

Storia della mia gente

Tu, come tutto quello che tocchi

The story of a broken dream. An Italian epic recalling many American stories.

A story of mafia, earth and love, because “the mafia is like a love story”.

Once upon a time the Italian Provinces were rich, happy and very productive. They traded with foreign countries, were on intimate terms with the Big Ones across the border, and were proud of having their not only national but communal identity. There was a time when even the stupid made money, in a nation where the GNP increased by two figures per year. Where the money earned in a carefree, high spirited, even ill-mannered way was openly displayed in luxury goods. Then came the gurus of globalisation saying that things had to change, going on television to sponsor markets in China and claiming that the old model – where things were going well – was going badly. This is “the story of my people”, all the people of a happy and intelligent province, sacrificed in the name of globalisation.

Maira, a student; Minguccio, her brother, a drug addict, and Charlie, her bootlegger brother. A story of love and friendship, but above all of the sea and smuggling, and the complications when their lives become linked with Ninì, a boss of the Sacred United Crown. Set in a wasted, chemical, smoky Brindisi – the “Marlboro City” of the ‘80s and ‘90s with the smuggler’s boats, the strongholds of the fugitioves from justice in Montenegro, the rackets of the police, the excise officers and the politicians – we see the stories of each explode and burn out: one heads north, one stays and continues dreaming, one leaves forever, and the boss moves on from gangland to collaboarting with the law. A story told through different voices, tracing the rise and fall of the boss Ninì, parallel to the painful, thorny growing-up of Maira, Minguccio and Charlie.

Addio

Four friends: an art critic, Joe – a businessman and philanderer, Pier – a scientist, and Dido, the socially committed intellectual. All connected through a coincidence: they were all “born under the moon”, in 1969 – the year man took his first step on the earth’s satellite. When Dido marries the lovely Assunta, whom he met during a trip to post-communist Cuba, he does not to know that his marriage would mark the beginning of a pounding series of events that would be a tough test on the friendship of the four. Midst economic hardship, contrasting love affairs, murders and prostitutes, ideals and lies, a novel that lays bare the contradictions of a generation – those born between the Sixties and Seventies, in constant struggle with themselves.

The story of a kid from the poor outskirts of Rome who swaps his childhood dreams for the illusion of criminal power.

A kid called Alfredo, the backdrop a choral fresco of the Italy of the Sixties: a period of innocence and happiness, when seen through the eyes of a child. But growing up everything changes and things are no longer what they appear to be. Alfredo experiences life in a reformatory, in a period when reality is changing: on one side a popular, proletarian Rome, whose daily life is marked by the songs of Don Backy and Caterina Caselli and episodes of crime news – a life hanging out in bars. On the other, the dream of an America made up of fast motorbikes and movies but also heinous homicides like that of Sharon Tate. Between these two worlds, Alfredo finds the road to crime more and more imposing, all his dreams are lost. It fills his life.

A journey through the most intimate confessions and personal notes on cinema ethics, by one of the contemporary leading film directors. For the first time the director of Russian Ark, Elegy of a Voyage etc., abandons the cine-camera and writes his first book. From the steppes of Chechena to the silent rooms of the Kremlin and on to the Japanese islands: stories, pages from his diary and reflections on cinema, this book gives us the testimony of an exceptional observer, Alexandr Sokurov, who reveals how he feels in this world and emerges us in the intimacy of his recollections. The book opens with Alexandra, a tale of the war in Chechena telling of the human desolation of every war; this story is followed by other short stories that include reflections on history, war and personal memories. From this intimate prose the author passes on to the Elegies (which immediately recall his cinematographic elegies), followed by a letter to himself entitled My Place in Cinema. Finally, some reflections on Ejzenstejn – an inspiration for re-reading the world and art as well as himself.

Nothing ever happens at Nuraiò, an imaginary (but quite realistic) little town in Sardinia.Until the murder of Maria Deiana, a pretty, easy-going young schoolteacher with short, red hair and coffee-coloured eyes. When they start investigating, the carabinieri, led by Martino Crissanti, are already well-informed. On the night of the crime heavy drops are falling on the window panes, on the houses and on the tarmac. And in this Sardinia, far from every cliché, it continues to rain on the good people and on the bad – sooner or later they’re all going to have to pay their dues. FAQ Mafia

Letters to Gabriele D’Annunzio

2012

edited by Franca Minnucci Epistolary New Issue

The questions we all ask about the mafia. The answers of one who can give them with authority: one of the authors of Il capo dei capi. Much has been written about the Mafia, not to mention the films, the television series and the plays, from The Godfather to La Piovra (The Leech). And yet its real “truth” continues to escape us: its laws, its rites, its origins, its language and propagating methods. In this volume with the usual, simple, straightforward language of the FAQ series, we look back over the history of Sicilian Mafia, going on to examine its relations and differences from the Calabrian ‘ndrangheta, the Neapolitan Camorra and the Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia. Mafia and religion, Mafia and politics, Mafia and finance: where are the boundaries of the Mafia phenomenon? And who are the Mafiosi? Strange subjects on the verge of bestiality, or “normal” persons mingling among us, unseen, unrecognizable?

Eleonora Duse and Gabriele D'Annunzio kept up one of the most harrowing, moving love affairs in the history of Italian culture. The actress and the Bard first met in Venice in September 1894 when they were both at the peak of their success. The Bard saw in the actress the person who better than anyone else could have exalted his future theatre and Eleonora considered the author an ideal partner for her performances of Shakespeare and Ibsen and her entire repertoire. Their love story and intellectual collaboration was to continue until Duse's death in 1924 and, in this book, Franca Minnucci has collected over one thousand three hundred missives that they exchanged showing the totality of an affection that lives on through the eternal pages of history and literature. Just as Eleonora was to say in one of the last messages written to Gabriele:“We'll talk – I'll hold you tight – Will I too tell you? – there, the last evening or the first? Always. Always.”

Building the Enemy and Other Occasional Writings

Costruire il nemico e altri scritti occasionali

Minima Mercatalia. Genesi e critica del capitalismo assoluto

An exposure of the false truths that create ideologies and racism at the service of those in power

The acquisition of self-awareness on behalf of humanity was defined in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit as a “historical novel”of conscience. What we propose here,in a kind of phenomenology of the “spirit of capitalism”, constitutes instead a “gothic novel” which narrates the process with which the “monster”created by humanity is becoming progessively autonomised until it will be the undisputed master:capitalism, today, knows no social resistance (no class hinders it),nor political opposition (right, left and centre share the same ultracapitalistic vision of the world),nor philosophical delegitimisation (apart from rare exceptions, today’s intellectuals are “organic”- in the Gramscian sense – to the system in force,to which they supply legitimising ideological pictures). Thus it can expand uncontrollably on a global scale, passing itself off as the “end of history”.The postmodern, secularised world in which we live has abandoned the traditional divinities, turning to a blind faith in a new monotheistic divinity that, like all others, does not accept “competitors”:the monotheism of the market.A brand new vision of the world has arisen, passing itself off as aseptic, secular, neutral and purely economical, but it is in fact a highly ideological and religious position because it holds (relegates, according to the original etymon of religio) all the peoples of the planet to the omnipotence of one sole directive principle of the totality of fetishised social relations – the market.

Minimum Marketaly. Genesis and Criticism

Every society and every individual, in order to define himself better, needs an enemy from whom to distinguish himself. All the racist regimes – from Nazism to Fascism – have proved it once and for all. They invented a monstrous enemy using intolerable racist arguments. The populist forms of government are still proving it, pursuing consensus by finding enemies in the immigrants, the Southerners, the homosexuals. Eco starts from this critical, anti-ideological reflection and continues with a series of ‘occasional’ writings of the most varied topics – those that have always characterised the author’s universe: the system of the media, the political and “perverse” uses of science, little stories of ideas particularly dear to him (the absolute, fire, lists... ), and small incursions into literature (from Hugo to Anna Karenina) and popular culture. A journey through the passions, curiosities and obsessions of one of the world’s most highly esteemed intellectuals, capable of reflecting while enjoying himself and, always, amusing us. One of the most well-known militant critics, from 1972 to 1974 the author interviewed Giorgio Bassani, Lalla Romano, Lucio Mastronardi, Domenico Rea on school; Alberto Moravia, Luigi Malerba, Raffaele La Capria, Attilio Bertolucci on nature; Carlo Bernari, Romano Bilenchi, Vasco Pratolini, Ottiero Ottieri, Paolo Volponi, Nanni Balestrini on the work of the labourer; Pier Paolo Pasolini, Tullio De Mauro, Carlo Cassola, Ignazio Buttitta, Umberto Eco on language and dialect; Franco Fortini, Arrigo Benedetti, Alberto Moravia on history. In this book, the chorus of voices, among the most important in the cultural field (not only in Italy), evokes aspects of individual and collective sensibility that are surprisingly topical, in dialogues that are never academic.

Italy is not just a place of art and unique landscapes; it’s also a land where every corner has its own traditions, every village its specificity, every place its gastronomy. Luca Guadagnino takes us through this country to discover those little known spots which preserve their strong identity, and tells us of these places through their dishes and their recipes. The Italians under the Church.

In the Name of God. Sex, Money and Spies.

From St. Peter to Berlusconi

The Enquiry into the Vatican

Gli italiani sotto la Chiesa. Da San Pietro a Berlusconi

In nome di Dio. Sesso, soldi e spie. L’inchiesta sul Vaticano

The Italians and the Church, Rome and the Pope: a couple that, a bit for love a lot for obligation, have been together for over two thousand years. The Italians owe the Church part of their fortune and , perhaps, a greater part of their misfortune: the Church protected them from the Barbarians only later to leave them disunited for centuries in the hands of foreign masters; the Church educated them in Christian values and diseducated them in civil values. Giordano Bruno Guerri looks at this topic as a layman, but has great respect for those who believe or have believed (but not for those who pretend or have pretended to believe). And, as a historian, he has brilliantly reconstructed a fascinating affair that from St Peter to Berlusconi crosses all the most important crossroads of our history: from the Communes to the struggles between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines, from the Renaissance to the CounterReformation, from the Decadence to the 17th and 18th centuries of the Italian Unification, up until the Second Republic. One after the other we discover the origins of many Italian events and behaviours, even the most up-to-date, that one would consider far-removed from religion.

Dangerous friends. Unconfessable affairs. Unofficial agreements with political parties for sharing multi-millionaire priveleges, often on the threshold of illegality. Midst shady, factional games, scandals and misdeeds, the Church has become like politics. But even more openly rich, unprincipled and arrogant in its demand for immunity for its men, more involved in outdoing MPs in appearances on talk-shows or in court rather than at the altar. For this, the most recent surveys reveal that the Catholic population throughout the world has turned their backs on them. Stefano Livadiotti, author of the best sellers L’altra casta and Magistrati. L’ultracasta, in a ‘shock-enquiry’, reports all the truth about a world of power as gilded as it is hypocritical and corrupt, who doesn’t practice what it preaches. Where what counts is fame, money and career, common acts of crime are normal and the most hardened paedophiles are lovingly safeguarded.Where, in the shadow of sacred buildings packed with bugs, wheelers, mafiosi and secret agents go about their business. Where stories of weapon trading intertwine with mysterious deaths, charity is an optional, the truth a miracle and sex is made but not talked about. All this with the Pope’s approval? Anyway, in the utmost secrecy, like any respectable lobby. And always, of course, in the name of God.

Mussolini’s Diaries – 1936 vol. 3

Gardens and Non-Gardens

(presumed)

Giardini e no

The inheritance of a recently deceased ex-partisan who had participated in Mussolini’s arrest reveals a clamorous discovery: six notebooks each of three hundred pages, attributable to the Duce and bearing a precious autographic testimony of the years from 1935 to 1942. Thus begins one of the most enthralling editorial events of recent years, rotating around the “Diaries of Mussolini”. The scientific community and the press are divided as regards the authenticity of the writings, with illustrious supporters for and against. If the attribution of the diaries is still under debate, certain is their value and historical and artistic interest. An unpublished document recounting what took place behind the scenes during the years that marked Italy’s modern history. The first volume is dedicated to 1939, the year of the German invasion of Poland, the spark that triggered off World War II: relations with Hitler, vitriolic comments on the Fascist hierarchy – a day-by-day diary describing the personality of a statesman, his errors and weaknesses, through a text of great intensity.

A manual of Botanic Resistance. Vices and virtues of the Italians through the gardens they cultivate . This book is a personal, ironic manifesto of botanic resistance that, starting from the controversy over the gardens in fashion today, offers a cross section of our society. The author takes into consideration the gardens of fanatic collectors obsessed by the rarity and peculiarity of the species to such an extent as to forget to draw pleasure from the aspect and perfume of the flowers; the gardens of the well-to-do ladies, spoilt by an asphyxial, mechanical creativity – lacquered and fake; the billionaire gardens, status symbols showing off their wealth, one of the maximum examples of non-garden since the owners have not a crumb of passion, relying entirely on professionals so-called garden designers; the Moorish gardens having replaced the Japanese ones in the western exoticist trend... Fortunately, in this valley of horrors, there also are some pleasant surprises like the gardens of the petrol stations – those wild and unpredictable flower beds fertilised by pollution, that for some bizarre twist of nature give life to surprising, touching creations. Visioni

Rome: from Renaissance to the Present Day

Visions. Conversation with Mariuccia Ciotta and Roberto Silvestri

Roma. Dal Rinascimento ai giorni nostri

The last century girl, talking about cinema and political commitment

In this book Vittorio Sgarbi leads us to discover Rome’s most secret places through the architects, sculptors and painters who made Italy’s capital city eternal. With him we discover a different Rome, partly known, partly unknown and ignored. Like this we can visit the wonders of Rome in a clear and easy way: in alphabetical order of place-names, authors and the monuments. Over 1500 sites reviewed and 3000 authors named: the largest compendium on Rome’s art and its historical and artistic beauties.

The “last century girl” in the darkened cinema. The thoughts, emotions and battles of a special spectator – Rossana Rossanda – face to face with the critics of the daily newspaper “Manifesto”. When the “Manifesto”was only about politics, in its early days, the early seventies, Rossanda was the first to fight for adding cultural pages, including cinema, to the paper. She reviewed hundreds of films, her approach to cinema always being a moment for reflection and militant criticism, rarely mere escapism. Visioni is a conversation on cinema and politics from 1900 to today. It looks at the revolution of form and the forms of revolution from the Russian screen to Hollywood, from the avantgarde to classic cinema, to digital.

Two front-line journalists, one anti- Berlusconian, one pro Berlusconi (maybe); one collaborator of the newspaper “Fatto Quotidiano”, one editor of the newspaper “Giornale”. Both answering the questions that all Italians ask about their Prime Minister. Why did Berlusconi enter politics? Why have the magistrates got it in for him? Does Berlusconi reflect the nation? Has he kept his promises? Is his leadership really on the brink of collapse or is it still solid? Through a brand new bipartisan experiment, this book helps understand better what is really going on; a manual for confuting, or confirming, one’s own convictions concerning a leading protagonist of the last fifteen years of Italian politics.

History of Beauty History of Ugliness

The Infinity of List

Storia della Bellezza Storia della Bruttezza

In the history of western culture the taste for accumulation often recurs: lists of saints, formations of soldiers, catalogues of monstrous beings or medicinal plants, hoards of treasures, up to the parades of the 1900s, from music hall to fashion. The vertigo of the list is neither innocent nor casual. A culture prefers enclosed, stable forms when certain of its own cultural identity, while it makes lists when faced with a disorderly series of phenomena in need of criteria. The poetics of the catalogue therefore runs through the whole history of art and literature; it is not only at work in the files of the legendary animals of the antique bestiaries, or in the celestial host of angels and those infernal of devils. We find it more transversely from Homer to Joyce, from the treasures of the Gothic cathedrals to Bosch’s oneiric landscapes, up to the 20th century with Andy Warhol or Arman. In this book Umberto Eco reflects on how the idea of catalogue has changed over the centuries and how, from one period to the next, it expressed the spirit of its time. Alongside his essay, a literary anthology and an ample selection of works of art to illustrate and develop the presented texts.

Vertigine della lista

Beauty and Ugliness are mutable, cultural attributes relative to the period and the society. What was beautifu or ugly in Ancient Greece probably did not correspond to what was considered so in those same times in the Arab world, just as what the Middle Ages considered monstrous became seductive in certain epochs of our same culture. History of Beauty and History of Ugliness also look back over all Western culture (literature, philosophy, iconography), identifying the declinations of aesthetic, conceptual categories which never represented absolute and changeless valves. The Weeping Statue Book + film in dvd The book contains a text by Giovanni Reale and Elisabetta Sgarbi on the “lamentations” in terracotta by Niccolò dell’Arca, Guido Mazzoni and Antonio Begarelli. These sculptural groups – masterpieces of humanistic and Rennaissance art – infer an extraordinarily intense reading on the experience of grief and separation, lightened by faith.

The Camera picta, better known as the Camera degli sposi, by Andrea Mantegna in Castello San Giorgio, Mantua, has fascinated millions of spectators, travellers and sightseers and has accompanied generations of Mantuans. In the light of the critical observations by Rodolfo Signorini, a wellknown Mantuan scholar, two leading interpreters of world art, Giovanni Reale and Vittorio Sgarbi, tackle the miracle of Mantegna’s art, recovering story-lines of ancient inspirations (Luciano di Samosata) and coeval contaminations (Leon Battista Alberti) in an unprecedented dialogue between hermeneutics and art criticism, research into the sources and a mystery as yet unresolved. How could Andrea Mantegna portray at the very moment a particular event occurred (the communication of the election of Francesco Gonzaga to the cardinal throne) a whole pack of men who from the fifteenth century to today can still miraculously be seen on the streets of Mantua? What pact with eternity did the painter make when he set those everlasting faces, expressions and grimaces on that wall? A map in which the visions of art and the landscapes of the soul are interwoven, overcoming the distance between things and places. CESARE BRANDI

Travels and Literary Works Viaggi e scritti letterari Edited by Vittorio Rubiu Brandi “In the book you can find the same brilliant and elegant aura of the countless conversations around the table. His curiosity led him to explore especially the ancient civilizations.” Alberto Arbasino A unique opportunity to rediscover one of the most original and vigorous figures of 20th century Italian culture: Cesare Brandi. Art historian, essayist, philosopher, restoration theorist, but also a writer in the purest, truest sense, Brandi (Siena 1906-Rome 1988) is herein presented above all as a great, authentic story-teller of things, places and people, a tireless travel raconteur. Ancient Greece, the source of the Nile, the deserts of the Middle-East, the secrets of “Holy Russia”, Buddha’s lands, the legendary Persia, the great wall of China, the thousand faces of peasant and metropolitan Italy. All these are the stages of a long exterior journey counter-balanced by another, intimate journey that, in the subsequent sections – that of his autobiographical and literary writings – make us discovering a Brandi who is the interpreter and the friend of great international artists such as Guttuso, De Pisis, Klee, Morandi, Picasso, Matisse. Brandi’s look – with his exceptional language virtuosity, is conjured up in this book in all its complexity and richness. An essential critical anthology and an accurate bibliography offer on the other hand the basic data for a further historical and philological in-depth study of this important writer and man of culture. The book is edited by Vittorio Rubiu Brandi and enriched by three introductory essays by Roberto Barzanti, Franco Marcoaldi and Vittorio Sgarbi. FERNANDA PIVANO

Dolls Repaired Here

Diari 1917/1973, 1974/200 Edited by Enrico Rotelli with Mariarosa Bricchi

Si riparano bambole

A “live” classic that is an homage to Fernanda Pivano’s writing, talent, and vitality sharper than ever .

Profi’s life is at the centre of the most exemplary novel by Antonio Pizzuto. Si riparano bambole is the story of a life told in fragments, frames of biographical epics from childhood to senility, edited like movie sequences: from the richness of the early years to the poverty of the final ones, from childhood curiosity to old age resignation. Despite the dry, unembellished plot, this book is a powerful work: from a single, overwhelming memory, it develops a dense and composed continuum caught before his inexorable fading-out.

When Fernanda Pivano first went to the USA, in the fifties, she was a young student in love with the America of those times, with a strong desire to meet face to face the masters of fiction who were just beginning to be known in Italy thanks to Cesare Pavese and Elio Vittorini. She immediately discovered a world of dreams, ideals and values that she would never get tired of celebrating: from the pacificism of Norman Mailer – acknowledged master of American fiction, both loved and hated by the Beat Generation of the sixties, who drew his antiimperialism from him – to the example of an inexhaustible thirst for novelty and authenticity that was the living myth, Ernest Hemingway. From the beat generation gurus (Ginsberg, Kerouac, Corso, Ferlinghetti, men who – in the name of an idea to return to the essentiality of Man, and clashing with the prejudices of capitalistic consumerism, lived and wrote without distinguishing art from life) to Don DeLillo and the minimalists. In short, a new American journey, among the contradictions and secret hopes of that great, glorified and feared nation that is, and always has been, America. With contributions by Erica Jong, Bret Easton Ellis, Jay Mc Inerney, Gary Fisketjon

GIOVANNI TESTORI

Works, vol. I, II, III Opere, vol. I, II, III Edited by Fulvio Panzeri. With a preface by Giovanni Raboni

vol. I (1943-1961) The first volume of the Works by Giovanni Testori, edited by Fulvio Panzeri, with a preface by Giovanni Raboni, contains the Lombardy writer’s most well-known narrative and theatrical works. From his first dramatic works (La morte. Un quadro and Tentazione nel convento) to the masterpieces of his maturity (La Maria Brasca and L’Arialda); from the classic tales Dio di Roserio, Ponte della Ghisolfa and Gilda del Mac Mahon to the novels Il fabbricone and Nebbia al Giambellino. vol. II (1965-1977) The second volume, instead, is a collection of the author’s major poetic texts, from I Trionfi to Nel tuo sangue, and a precious review of compositions almost impossible to find nowadays, such as “For You, Alain”, together with some unpublished works like the two Suites for Francis Bacon… The collection will also include the novels La Cattedrale and Passio Laetitiae et Felicitatis, where Testori experiments an innovative disintegration of the traditional narrative forms, giving masterly proof of his linguistic exceptionality, and famous theatrical texts such as the Trilogia degli Scarozzanti, where educated speech is skilfully blended and harmonised with grotesque, popular deformations. The book, edited by Fulvio Panzeri (as vol. I), is prefaced by Giovanni Raboni. vol. III (1978-1993) The third volume is devoted to the period going from 1978 to 1993, and collects all his production of the Eighties. The main surprise of the volume is the unpublished poems, above all the "familiar" one, or the ones taken by magazines or art catalogues, as well as the publication of the two "Brianciatrilogie" and the second version of the Erodiade.
