Shearing is not recommended, as damage to shears may result from Astralloy-V’s Astralloy-V’s higher physical properes.

WELdIng In order to weld Astralloy-V, a fresh and dry electrode t hat is low in Hydrogen is recommended. The E7018 is excellent for normal welding procedures, providing adequate strength with good duclity. In colder climates, it is always recommended that the plate be preheated to over 300°F (149°C) to remove moisture. The preheang should be applied to areas that will be welded and must uniformly

Astralloy 8000 is an an-abrasive, high-quality oil tempered steel. It is characterized by it s high performance, with resistance to wear 50% beer than water tempered 500 BHN steels. Astralloy 8000 features an innovave concept, based on an original combinaon of chemical analysis and heat treatment (oil tempering). This combinaon gives the steel enhanced resistance to abrasion by adding the following features: *

Fine chrome and molybdenum carbides that reinforce the steel’s microstructure.

*

Exceponal added 70 BHN work hardening capacity, produced by a metallurgical process called Transformaon Transformaon Induced Plascity (TRIP).

All the classic thermal cung processes (oxy-plasma-laser) can be used without preheang for thicknesses up to 1 ½" (the plate temperature must be at least 50°F (10°C). Plates above 1 ½" thick must be preheated to 302°F (150°C) to avoid fractures at the edges. Plasma and laser processes are especially recommended because they increase the precision and appearance of cuts and limit alteraon of the aected area.

EB 450 is a liquid, quenched and tempered, through-hardened, high impact alloy steel with excellent abrasion-resistant properes. Its balanced boron, modied nickel-chrome moly chemistry is ideal for achieving an opmum hardness to toughness rao. EB 450 boasts a longer wear life due to its through-hardness which is more uniform than what is found in convenonal carbon/manganese steels. This quench-hardened material is compevely priced for opmum cost/wear raons. This steel’s resistance to atmospheric corrosion further reduces surface ping. EB 450 is eld proven in extremely abrasive bulk handling installaons.

EB 450 BEnEFITS *

Higher wear resistance, when compared to convenonal steels, due to its uniform hardness.

*

Easy to weld with normal low hydrogen simple techniques.

*

May be ame cut with oxyacetylene, plasma or similar methods.

*

Cold formable with heavy presses or rolls.

*

The high hardness and toughness in combinaon with its high fricon coecient, reduces maintenance costs.

*

EB 450 may be easily cut, welded, machined and cold formed, as required.

The following parameters are provided as a g uide:

CUTTING

To re-sharpen the tool, a point angle between 135° and 150° and negave rake is recommended. Speed must be between 10 – 20 SFPM (surface feet per minute). For example, when drill ing 3/4", the feeding must be between 0.004" and 0.008" per revoluon.

MAnUFACTURIng Despite the high toughness of EB 450, it is possible to bend it with a hydraulic press and cold form it. We recommend bending it transverse to the rolling direcon marked on each plate. The internal minimum radius for forming EB 450 is: *

When bending transverse to the rolling direcon, the minimum radius is 6 mes the thickness of the plate.

*

When bending parallel to the rolling direcon, the minimum radius is 12 mes the thickness of the plate.

*

To cold bend t he EB 450 plate to 90°, form in gradual steps without exceeding the recommended minimum radius.

The most common cung methods for EB 450 plate are ame and plasma. For a successful cut, use the procedures and fuel recommended by equipment vendors. As a precauon, the EB 450 plates must be pre-heated before

WELdIng

cung. Thicknesses of up to 1" require a temperature of 250°F

The EB 450 is readily weldable by following some basic welding

(120°C) and larger thicknesses require a temperature of 300°F

guidelines.

(140°C). Normally, for an-abrasive applicaons, these cut methods provide a precision range of +/- 1/8" along the length and width. For applicaons where stricter tolerances are required, please consult our technical department.

DRILLING EB 450 requires slow speeds for beer drilling. Feed speed must be maintained constant.

To prevent cracking during the welding process, the following three areas should be controlled: 1. Eliminate hydrogen pick-up in the weld metal during welding. 2. Minimize stress in the weld joint. 3. Use proper preheat and interpass temperatures and avoid rapid cooling of the weld area following welding. While welding the EB 450 product, we recommend the use of skip welding and backstep welding procedures, as well as minimizing the heat input.

For opmum drilling results, we recommend using low rpm speeds for tools, short stem bits and generous cung lubricaon. Bits with

THICKNESS & SIZES

carbide inserts provide longer life; however, however, a good quality high speed bit is enough.

AstraWear AstraWear 500F is a water tempered martensic steel, with 500 BHN (51.5 HRC), typical hardness and resistant to wear from very severe abrasion. Its mechanical properes, high wear resistance, hardness, and strength make AstraWear 500F steel ideal for use in applicaons requiring resistance to sliding abrasion and where 400 BHN steels do not provide a long enough service life. Compared with convenonal steels, like A572-50 (S355), AstraWear 500F oers real improvement in equipment lifespans, of up to 5 mes, and consequently allows for signicant reducons in design thickness. AstraWear AstraWear 500F steel is especially suited for applicaons in quarries, construcon, mines, cement plants, and the iron and steel industry, among others. is not heat treated, so welding does not aect its properes. It can be formed to a radius as small as 3" (on thin plate.) With the relaxed condion of the Astralloy Trip-L-Tu base material, the forming will not create cracks on the outer bend, and with the consistency of the Astralloy Trip-L-Tu Trip-L-Tu weld material,no spalling or breakage will occur on the inner surface.

Applicas a Uses

Astralloy Trip-L-Tu Trip-L-Tu pipe is used primarily for wear due to fricon. With plate, this could be from coal, rock, or gravel moving through or across a chute, liner, liner, cyclone, sizing screen, dozier blade, breaker plate, etc. With the pipe, applicaons may include slurry, coke, coal dust, etc.

Base material is ASTM A 36 structural steel. The overlay consists of predominantly hard chromium carbides in a tough iron-base matrix. Nominal hardness is 555 – 653; microhardness of chromium carbide is 1800 VPH (70 – 75 Rockwell C converted.)

Avataes ver ther wear materials

Ceramic: Astralloy Trip-L-Tu Trip-L-Tu also has certain advantages over ceramics. Given the high price of ceramics, cost is a major factor. Installaon costs are also a factor due to the thickness and

aachment procedures necessary for the fragile ceramic. Chipping is another factor inherent in ceramic. Ceramic cannot handle impact whatsoever, whatsoever, whereas the Astralloy Trip-L-Tu will handle moderate to (in some cases) severe impact. Aachment failure is yet another drawback to glued on ceramic pieces. In piping, Astralloy Trip-L-Tu Trip-L-Tu is parcularly beer suited than ceramic. connecons are no longer a concern.

Astralloy Trip-L-Tu Trip-L-Tu will typically exhibit stress relief cracks in the overlay surface. These cracks are an inherent feature of hard-facing and develop as the overlay cools following deposion, at 5/8" to 2" spacing transverse to the weld bead. They are conned to the overlay and do not penetrate into the base plate nor propagate in service. Rol-Man DRILLING *

MACHINING

Rol-Man can be successfully drilled with “M-Style Hardsteel Drills”. Hardsteel drilling is fricon drilling, not twist drilling. The process involves heang the steel under the drill point, not just cung it cold.

*

On a lathe, use carbide tools, 90 – 100 SFM, feed at .012" per revoluon for roughing, and .008" revoluon for nishing.

*

For milling, use carbide tools, 50 SFM, with a .004- chip load per insert per revoluon.

*

Maintain selected speed and constant feed pressure.

*

Use rust-inhibited water coolant to minimize drill heang.

*

Because Rol-Man is a work hardening steel, convenonal drill bits tend to harden rather than cut the steel.

*

Plasma or laser cung works well. Oxyacetylene cung gives a poor edge.

Astralloy-V MACHINING For the best connuous machining, we recommend using disposable negave rake, mechanically clamped tungsten carbide inserts and contoured grinders. For an excellent nish, speeds should be 180 to 270 SFM. A generous and connuous lubricant/coolant bath will prolong tool life. For beer metal removal, the cung depth should exceed the feed rate by a factor of 10.

MILLING For opmum metal removal in interrupted machining , use negave rake, mechanically clamped tungsten carbide inserts. The generally recommended feed rate is 0.003" per tooth. The total cung rate is equal to 0.003" mes the number of inserts in the cuer x rpm. Uniform feed distribuon requires the use of precision inserts. At a hardness of 350 B HN, 150 surface feet per minute is reasonable. Slower rates for greater hardness and higher rates for lesser hardness.
