Standard Practice for

Conversion of Kinematic Viscosity to Saybolt Universal Viscosity or to Saybolt Furol Viscosity1 This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 2161; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of  original adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. A superscript supers cript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. The Saybolt Universal viscosity equivalent to a given kinematic viscosity at any temperature may be calculated as described in 4.3. Equivalent values at 210°F are given in Table 1 for convenience. 3.2 The Saybolt Furol viscosity viscosity equivalents are tabulated tabulated in Table 3 for temperatures of 122°F and 210°F only. 3.3 Examp Examples les for using the tables tables are given in Appenix Appenix X1.

1.1 This practice practice covers the conversion tables and equations for converting kinematic viscosity in centistokes (cSt) at any tem temper peratu ature re to Say Saybol boltt Uni Univer versal sal vis viscos cosity ity in Say Saybol boltt Univer Uni versal sal sec second ondss (SU (SUS) S) at the sam samee tem temper peratu ature re and for converting kinematic viscosity in centistokes at 122 and 210°F to Saybolt Furol viscosity in Saybolt Furol seconds (SFS) at the same temperatures temperatures.. Kinem Kinematic atic viscosity viscosity valu values es are based on 2 water being 1.0038 mm  /s (cSt) at 68°F (20°C).

4. Signi Significanc ficancee and Use

NOTE  1—A fundamental and preferred preferred method for measuring kinematic viscosity is by use of kinematic viscometers as outlined in Test Method D 445 445.. It is re reco comm mmen ende ded d tha thatt kin kinem emati aticc vi visc scosi osity ty be re repo porte rted d in centistokes, centisto kes, instead of Saybolt Universal Universal Second Secondss (SUS) or Saybolt Furol Seconds (SFS). Thus this method is being retained for the purpose of  calculation of kinematic viscosities from SUS and SFS data which appear in pas pastt lite literat rature ure.. One cen centist tistoke okess equ equals als one mil millime limetre tre squa squared red per second (mm2 /s).

4.1 At one time the petroleum petroleum industry industry relied relied on meas measuring uring kinematic viscosity by means of the Saybolt viscometer, and expressing kinematic viscosity in units of Saybolt Universal, Seconds (SUS) and Saybolt Furol, Seconds (SFS). This practice is now obsolete in the petroleum industry. 4.2 This practice practice establishes establishes the officia officiall equa equations tions relating relating 2 SUS and SFS to the SI kinematic viscosity units, mm  /s. 4.3 This practice practice allows for the conversion conversion between SUS and SFS units and SI units of kinematic viscosity.

1.2 The SI unit of kinematic viscosity viscosity,, mm2 /s, and temperature in degrees Fahrenheit are the standard in this practice.
