This is the cell layer that we treat and hydrate. Cells on the surface of the skin are continually sloughed off to make way for replacement cells. The whole process takes about 2-3 weeks for younger skin, and about twice that long for mature skin. The longer the process takes, the more prone the skin is to moisture loss.

What is a pore? Pores are openings in the skin's surface from which hairs grow and through which oil from oil glands flows to the surface. The size of a pore is proportional to the size of the oil gland under it. Can pore size be reduced? There is no known way to shrink or reduce the size of pores. Enlarged pores indicate a large oil gland below the surface. It is, however, possible to make pores appear smaller with the appropriate skin care measures - namely, those skincare techniques that remove oil from the skin's surface. When the cells that make up the skin's surface are free of excess oil, pores will appear smaller.

The alcohol in Clarifying Astringent Toner acts as an astringent and removes excess oils and sebum from the skin. Various ARTISTRY products also contain fatty (non-ethanol) alcohols; these are non-drying, non-volatile alcohols which serve as thickeners and as emollients. Behenyl Alcohol is used in Clarifying Moisturiser. Cetyl Alcohol is used in Moisture Rich Protective Moisturiser.

Q Are all ARTISTRY products non-comedogenic? A No. A product is considered non-comedogenic if it does not cause clogged pores. A comedone is a plug that forms in the opening of a sebaceous follicle or pore. In humans, comedones require a number of weeks to form; a comedone is not the result of a single product application. Only products left on the skin (i.e., toners, moisturisers, and foundations) need to be tested for comedogenicity because they are applied and left on the skin for extended periods of time. Products that are applied and immediately removed (cleansers, masques) are not left on the skin long enough to clog pores. Therefore, the claim non-comedogenic is not valid for these products.

Q ls it necessary to apply sun protection lotions on top of the ARTISTRY moisturisers? A That depends on several factors. The ARTISTRY Clarifying and Moisture Rich Moisturisers were designed to afford sun protection during normal, everyday, incidental sun exposure as you go about your daily activities. In this way, ARTISTRY offers you protection for these times without needing to use an extra product.

Q What is the difference between young and mature skin? A As normal, healthy, and well cared for skin

matures, it undergoes changes which are consistent with normal ageing of other organs of the body. Basically, all skin functions begin to work slower and are less quick to respond to changing needs or trauma. It takes skin longer to recover from cuts and abrasions. Skin seems to dry out quicker in the Autumn and take longer to recover in the Spring, and is generally less reactive overall. One of the most important changes resulting from this slow down in skin functioning is that it takes longer for the epidermis to renew itself. This is how the stratum corneum is constantly being replaced. It is the stratum corneum which is the skin's first line of defence and it needs to be in good condition to fulfil this role. The stratum corneum of mature skin has to perform this function longer because it is not being replaced as quickly as in young skin. Therefore, the water-soluble components (humectants) and the oil-soluble components (lipids) between these cells can be depleted. This leads to a drier, rougher, and more brittle surface which allows greater moisture loss out through the skin as well as a less effective barrier against environmental insults. Photo damaged skin can result in what is known as "premature ageing" of the skin. While this is different than normal ageing, many of the features of photo damaged skin such as dryness and wrinkling can make the skin look much older than its real age.
