PURPOSE AND USE OF PROCESS INDUSTRY PRACTICES In an effort to minimize the cost of process industry facilities, this Practice has been prepared from the technical requirements in the existing standards of major industrial users, contractors, or standards organizations. By harmonizing these technical requirements into a single set of Practices, administrative, application, and engineering costs to both the purchaser and the manufacturer should be reduced. While this Practice is expected to incorporate the majority of requirements of most users, individual applications may involve requirements that will be appended to and take precedence over this Practice. Determinations concerning fitness for purpose and particular matters or application of the Practice to particular project or engineering situations should not be made solely on information contained in these materials. The use of trade names from time to time should not be viewed as an expression of preference but rather recognized as normal usage in the trade. Other brands having the same specifications are equally correct and may be substituted for those named. All Practices or guidelines are intended to be consistent with applicable laws and regulations including OSHA requirements. To the extent these Practices or guidelines should conflict with OSHA or other applicable laws or regulations, such laws or regulations must be followed. Consult an appropriate professional before applying or acting on any material contained in or suggested by the Practice.

Introduction 1.1

Purpose The purpose of this Practice is to provide the manufacturer and the contracted installer of standard steel doors and frames with a specification for manufacturing and installing steel doors and frames to be used in process industry facilities.

1.2

Scope This Practice describes the requirements for all material, fabrication, finishes, delivery, and installation of standard steel doors and frames. This Practice does not include requirements for finish painting. Any conflicts or inconsistencies between this Practice, the design drawings, or contract documents shall be brought to the attention of owner for resolution.

1.3

Use of This Practice This Practice has been prepared to make maximum use of documents and standards provided to the construction industry by the Steel Door Institute (SDI) of Cleveland, Ohio. Where appropriate, documents furnished by SDI are referenced and made a part of this Practice. It is recommended that the architect or designer use SDI-108 to prepare the contract documents. This document is a complete revision of PIP ARS08111, and therefore, revision markings are not provided.

part of the legal contract agreement or purchase order agreement between the owner and the contractor designer: The party who prepares the drawings for the project manufacturer: The party who fabricates the doors and frames in accordance with contract documents and who provides shop drawings owner: The owner of the building or the owner’s authorized agent Note: For other definitions, refer to ANSI A250.7.

General 4.1

Quality Assurance The manufacturer shall provide and the contractor shall install doors and frames complying with ANSI A250.8 and as specified herein. Refer to SDI-122 to ensure that a quality installation has been achieved.

4.1.1

Qualifications: The manufacturer must be pre-qualified and must meet all requirements of the Steel Door Institute (SDI).

4.1.2

Experience: The contractor must be experienced with at least 3 years of steel door and frame installation and be pre-qualified by the owner’s representative.

Submittals 4.2.1

Product data: The manufacturer shall submit two copies of specifications for fabrication and installation including data substantiating that products comply with all requirements in this Practice and in the contract documents.

4.2.2

Shop drawings: The manufacturer shall submit shop drawings, indicating all details of design and fabrication. The shop drawings shall include details and the location of reinforcement for hardware, which is required for all doors and frames.

4.2.3

Fabrication of doors and frames shall not be started until after the shop drawings have been submitted and approved by the owner.

4.2.4

The contractor shall submit one copy of the final approved shop drawings to the owner for record keeping.

4.2.5

Fire-rated door assemblies: For door assemblies required to be fire rated and exceeding limitations of labeled assemblies, the manufacturer shall submit certification that each door and frame assembly has been constructed to conform to design, materials, and construction equivalent to requirements for labeled construction given in NFPA 80, NFPA 252, and UL 10B.

4.2.6

Pre-installation conference: The owner’s representative may call a preinstallation conference before the start of installation.

Delivery, Storage, and Handling 4.3.1

The manufacturer shall assume full responsibility for shipping the required number of units of size, thickness, and hand shown on the design drawings. All doors and frames shall be suitably reinforced for the hardware specified in the door hardware schedule.

4.3.2

The manufacturer shall deliver doors and frames wrapped in cardboard or crated to provide protection during transit and job site storage. Provide additional protection to prevent damage to finish of factory-finished doors and frames.

4.3.3

The contractor shall inspect doors and frames upon delivery for damage. Minor damages may be repaired provided refinished items are equal in all respects to new work and acceptable to owner; otherwise, remove and replace damaged items as directed.

4.3.4

The contractor shall provide job site storage as per ANSI A250.8.

Government Regulations 4.4.1

All work covered by this Practice shall comply with federal standards and instructions of OSHA, NFPA 101, and state and local codes, including any additional requirements by state or local agencies that have jurisdiction where doors and frames are to be installed.

4.4.2

Where applicable, meet design and construction requirements of the ADA particularly as defined in ADAAG 4.1.6(3)(d), ADAAG 4.13.5, and ADAAG 4.13.6.

Products 5.1

Manufacturer The manufacturer must be a member of the Steel Door Institute (SDI) unless written approval for a non-SDI member is obtained from the owner’s representative.

5.2

Materials 5.2.1

Frames shall be fabricated from 16-gauge minimum cold-rolled steel conforming to ASTM A366/M. Width and profile of frames shall be as shown on the design drawings.

5.2.2

Doors shall comply with the following guidelines: 5.2.2.1 Interior doors: ANSI A250.8, Level II, Model 2, heavy duty, 18-gauge minimum cold-rolled sheet steel faces unless noted otherwise Core design: ANSI A250.8, Section 2.3.2, unless noted otherwise 5.2.2.2 Exterior doors: ANSI A250.8, Level-III, Model 2, extra heavy duty, 16-gauge minimum galvanized steel faces unless noted otherwise

Insulation: a minimum insulation R factor of 12.5 unless noted otherwise 5.2.2.3 Low-frequency standard duty doors: ANSI A250.8, Level-I, Model 2 seamless doors as called for on design drawings 5.2.2.4 Labeling: The UL 10B, which shall show degree of fire protection indicated by opening class, shall be affixed and visible on all firerated doors and frames as evidence of compliance with procedures of label agency. 5.2.2.5 Hardware preparation for lock reinforcing shall be 14-gauge hinge mortises and shall be reinforced with 10-gauge steel plates. Closer reinforcing shall be 12 gauge. 5.2.3 5.3

Door hardware: Door hardware procurement and installation shall comply with PIP ARS08710.

Accessories 5.3.1

Stops: Provide non-removable stops on outside of exterior doors and on secure side of interior doors for louvers and glazing.

5.3.2

Door silencers: Except on weather-stripped frames, drill stops (before priming) shall receive three silencers on strike jambs of single-doorframes and shall receive two silencers on heads of double doorframes.

5.3.3

Non-rated door accessories: Accessories for non-rated doors shall comply with the following: 5.3.3.1 Louvers: Inverted “V” blade as per SDI-111-C with a nominal size of 24 inches (600 mm) wide by 18 inches (450 mm) high or as shown on drawings 5.3.3.2 Glazing stops: Extruded aluminum with snap-in aluminum glazing stops or minimum 20-gauge steel as per ANSI A250.8

5.3.4

Fire-rated doors: Only UL-listed fire door hardware shall be used. 5.3.4.1 Louvers: UL-listed, automatic-closing type, operated by 135ºF (57ºC) fusible link, constructed of roll-formed steel conforming to ASTM A366/M and SDI-111-C Maximum louver size is 24 inches by 24 inches (600 x 600 mm). Louvers are not permitted to be installed in doors with fire exit hardware or in stairwells. Louvers can be furnished in 1-3/4-inch (44-mm)-thick doors with a 1-1/2 hour B label or a 3/4 hour C label. Glass light and louver combinations are not permitted in a single door. 5.3.4.2 Glazing stops: constructed of roll-formed steel conforming to ASTM A366/M, UL requirements, and SDI 118. Glazing stops must be factory installed. Glazing is not permitted in class A, 3-hour-rated doors.

Frames in contact with masonry: Provide field-applied bituminous coating inside frame profile.

5.5.3

When specified in the contract documents, provide factory-baked-on finish coats in accordance with ANSI A250.8. Color and finish shall be as specified by the owner in the contract documents.

5.5.4

When specified in the contract documents, provide galvanized doors and frames in accordance with SDI-112.

Execution 6.1

Installation 6.1.1

Frames: Install in accordance with ANSI A250.8 and SDI-105.

6.1.2

Doors: Install in accordance with ANSI A250.8, SDI 122, and SDI 111-D. Fire-rated doors shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 80 and SDI-118.

6.1.3

Installation tolerances shall be as listed in SDI-122-90.

Adjusting and Cleaning 6.2.1

Adjust door and hardware for smooth and balanced operation.

6.2.2

Clean all surfaces of grease, oil, dirt, and other impurities.

6.2.3

Touch-up scratched surfaces with primer equivalent to that of shop coat.

6.2.4.

Replace damaged, dented doors and/or frames at no cost to owner.

Protection Protect doors and frames from damage during construction operations.
