GUIDELINES INSTALLATION OF KILOMETRE POST

GUIDELINES FOR THE INSTALLATION OF KILOMETRE POST CONTENTS I, Introduction In line with the Government's policy on metrication, the kilometre post was introduced in the mid 1970's to replace the milestone. During the course of time the original design encountered numerous shortfalls and inadequacies such as the legibility of the letterings, spacing of the post and type of information provided. As a result of the above deficiencies several states took the initiative to put up their own design, resulting in non-4niformity. In order to attain a standard kilometre post throughout the country, a review was carried out by the Road Branch (Design Unit), The revised design was presented at a Workshop on Road Standards in May 1984 and was adopted to replace all existing posts. The revised post was designed basing on the following objectives : i. a source of information to the public as regarding the distance to and from cities, towns terminal points and important locations. ii. to designate the road for adminis trative purpose. iii. an inventory for the purpose of road maintenance iv. a means of locating addresses in particular those addresses located outside the town limits. The post also serves to locate position of villages or settlement away from the town. v. an assurance to the road users that they are travelling in the right direction.

II. Design Requirements The kilometre post shall consist of two types to be installed together at different spacing on all Federal Roads. The two types shall be designated as Type A and Type B. 1. Type A 1.1 Shape The shape shall be of a V - section of thickness 50mm. The detailed dimensions are as shown in Appendix 1 1.2

Material The material shall be concrete of mix 1:1.5:3 - 19mm. The concrete shall have a minimum crushing cube strength of 25 N/mm2 at 28 days and shall comply with the recommendations in CP 110 (1972)The concrete shall be reinforced with wire meshing of size 1 SWG. at 100mm spacing complying with BS. 4483. The details of reinforcements are as shown in Appendix I. 1.3

Interval The post shall be installed at every 5 kilometre spacing or at least one shall be planted if the distance between two important locations is less than 5 km. 1.4

Information

1.4.1 The information written on the face shall be both the destination name and the distance to the destination. The destination shall be of two, one primary and the other secondary. On roads where there is no secondary destination ahead the post shall only show the name of the primary destination and the

distance to it. Primary and secondary destinations are generally define& as below:-

section of thickness 5*)0 mm. The detailed dimensions are as given in Appendix II.

Primary destinations are: Federal Capital, State capitals, ports of disembarkation and terminal points. Secondary destinations are: District capitals, intersection points and other important towns. A list of the primary and secondary destinations for Peninsular Malaysia is as shown in Appendix IV together with their abbreviated form. It is to be noted that some of the secondary destinations listed in Appendix IV are designated as primary destinations for certain roads. The arrangement of the letterings and numerals is as shown by a typical example in Appendix I. The information shall be written on both the longer outer facesof the post. 1.4.2 A route-marker in the form of a standard JKR logo shall be fixed to both the longer outer facesof the post to indicate the number of the route.

2.2 Material The material and specifications shall be as stated under sub-clause 1.2

1.5

Benchmark A brass benchmark supplied by the Survey Department shall be cast into the concrete foundation as shown in Appendix III. The reduced level of the benchmark shall be determined by the Survey Department. The Survey Department shall be informed of any physical movement of the concrete foundation to enable them to redetermine the reduced level of the benchmark . 2. Type B 2.1 Shape The shape shall be of a rectangulation Cawangan Jalan, Ibu Pejabat JKR, K.L

2.3 Interval The post shall be placed at every 1 km except the fifth post which will be replaced by Type A.

2.4

Information The post shall indicate the primary destination and the distance to the primary destination. The primary destination is as defined under subclause 1.4.1. A list of primary destinations for Post Type B and their abbreviations is as shown in Appendix111. 3.General (For both type A and Type B). 3.1 Colour 3.1.1 The colour of the post and foundation shall be in white. 3.1.2 The destination letterings and distance numerals shall be in silver white on blue background. The numeral for the route marker shall be in black on yellow background (For Type A only) 3.1.3 The colour shall comply to the following: a.Blue - No 109 Middle Blue B.S. 381 C: 1964 b.Yellow - No. 356 Golden Yellow B.S 381 C:1964 c. White - To comply with clause 1.3.2 B.S. 873 Part 2 1973. Reflection factor not less than 0.8 and the day light luminance factor not less than 0.6 Page 2

3.1.3 The colour shall comply to the following: a.Blue - No 109 Middle Blue B.S. 381 C: 1964 b.Yellow - No. 356 Golden Yellow B.S 381 C:1964 c. White - To comply with clause 1.3.2 B.S. 873 Part 2 1973. Reflection factor not less than 0.8 and the day light luminance factor not less than 0.6 d.Black - To comply with Clause 1.3.3 B.S. 873 Part 2 1973. Reflection factor not more than 0.02. e.For the Chromaticity Colour Coordinates refer to Appendix A. Aluminium blank This shall be of wrought alminium sheet conforming to B.S 1470: 1072 and B.S. 4300/6: 1969 (Suplementary;. It shall be of 1 mm thick with a thickness tolerances t 0.06mm

uniform and the retro-reflective sign shall not present a patchy appearance. The retro-reflective sheeting shall be adhered securely onto the aluminium blank by means of a vacuum applicator. The adhesive bond shall not be less than 3.5N/mm2 when tested in single shear. The transparent colours are tc be applied to the reflective sheeting by the conventional silk screen process. 3.4

Epoxy bonder The aluminium blank shall be adhered to the concrete surface and by an approved epoxy bonder. It shall have a minimum tensile bond strength and shear bond strength of 3.5 N/mm2 and 2.1N/mm2 respectively.

3.2

3.3

Retro-reflective sheeting This shall be of high intensity grade. The sheeting shall consist of spherical lens elements embedded within a transparent plastic having a smooth flat outer surface. The requirements for encapsulated lens wide angle flat top reflective sheeting are as tabulated below: The photometric performance of the reflective sheeting shall satisfy the following conditions: i. The average luminance shall be between 43 and 108 cd/m2 ii. The maximum luminance shall not exceed 323 cd/m2 iii. There shall be a minimum lumi nance variation. The distribution of illumination shall be reasonably Cawangan Jalan, Ibu Pejabat JKR, K.L

Letterings and Numerals The height of the numerals shall be 100mm for both Type A and B. The height of the letterings to indicate the destination shall be 80 mm for Type A and 70 mm for Type B. The height however may be reduced to no less than 60 mm for certain excessively long name which cannot be abbreviated. Both the numerals and letterings shall be of Series 2 Standard 3.6 Location 3.6.1 The post shall be planted on the left side of the road if the motorist is heading north and east. If the motorist is heading north-east or north-west, it shall also be planted on the left. 3.6.2 On divided roads the post shall be planted on the left side of each carriageway. The posts on both sides of the carriageway shall be directly opposite each other. 3.6.3 The post shall be planted at 2 Page 3
