Preface APS 2.0 took the graphics asnd design industry by storm. Since its introduction in 1989, it has earned a place in computing history for its applications in Indian scripts and has become the most powerful software product developed for IBM-PC till date. This package as you know was running under DOD environment. Today experienced DTP users have shifted to a very powerful multiuser, multitasking, multiprocessing environment of MS WINDOWS. APS 3.0 and MS windows base Indian language interface was released in 1993 with powerful facility to work in any windows based software, in Devnagari, Gujrati. The release of APS 3.5 has become even more popular for its notable improvements (like various keyboard layouts, number of text import filters for standard word processors & Editors in Devnagari) over the previous version and has become easier operating software based packages. APS Designer 4.0 has been released taking into consideration requirements of DTP industry. Two powerful features like 'Other Vendors Font Support' and 'APS Mega Text Conversion' has been added in this version, it also supports bilingual typing. APS 4.0 manual provides with information for installing and operating the package with utmost ease. We assume that user is familiar with Windows (ver. 3.1 and later), Adobe Type Manager (ver. 2.6 or later) and atleast one of the Windows based DTP applications such as Aldus PageMaker (4.0 or above), CorelDraw (3.0 or above), MS Word (2.0 or above) QuarkExpress (3.3 or above) etc. Adobe Type Manager (ATM ver 2.6 or later) should be installed before installing APS Designer 4.0 package. Care has been taken in the manual to inform you about required techniques and neccessary tips needed for installing various utilities.

1 Introduction Necessity of Windows MS Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroup 3.11, & now Windows 95, Windows 98 products of MICROSOFT are already in the market. Basically it is WYSIWYG {what you see (on screen display) is what you get (on printer output)}. Secondly Windows uses scalable typeface technology which helps the users to create adorable layouts, for precision and overall presentation, of any jobwork. Windows support almost all the printers i.e. Dot Matrix, Ink-Jet, Laser (NonPostscript & PostScript) & Imagesetters available in market. Window based packages are user friendly & have the facility of importing and exporting which allows user to use various packages simultaneously for a single job. Windows is multi tasking, multi user environment, in which many applications can concurrently work. Windows allows the use of many international packages available in market thereby increasing efficiency. There are some designing packages available which permit to stretch mind, to design unimaginable reations, or execute tabulation jobs with multiple columns. Color separation jobs of pre-scanned images in respective windows based programs, produces 4 color separated outputs for offset printing. Animation and Slide preparation or Charts etc. can also be handled by respective windows based applications.
Indian Scripts for Windows APS Designer 4.0 developed by a team of Calligraphers, Designers, Programmers & Technologists provides for the extenstion of these facilities of DTP application in Indian Scripts under Windows environment.

Overview of APS Software APS Designer 4.0 APS Designer 4.0 package is an interface to the Windows based DTP packages like PageMaker, CorelDraw, MS Word, MS Excel etc. APS 4.0 package consists of basic Indian scripts with an adorable quality font library, Borders and additional utilities like Multilayout Keyboard, Format Conversion Wizard, Keyboard Layout Viewer. Beside this in this version we are encorporating two powerful feature in package. 'Other Vendor Font Support' and Maga Text Conversion Utility as well as Shbdankan, APS Keypad, word processor for Indian Languages Chitragupt. This Package is available from VSOFT Services Pvt. Ltd. Mumbai (VSPL) or local dealers. The necessary software support will be provided by VSPL or dealers as the case may be.

Format Conversion Wizard APS Designer 4.0 software allows users to convert text generated through various text editors (Akshar, Shabdaratna, Modular, Script, Prakashak, LE (.ISC), Devyani) prevalent in the market through Format Conversion Wizard utility.

Keyboard Layout Viewer An on-line Keyboard Layout viewer is provided for viewing the layout of keyboard being used. Layout can also be printed. Other Vendors Font Support APS Designer 4.0 offers you font support of popular vendors in market , with multiple languages and multiple keyboard layouts for each languages of each vendor. Mega Text Conversion This utility provides flexibility in different vendors file format. Using this utility you can convert text saved in other vendor's format to APS format and vice versa.This utility provides flexibility in different vendors file format. Using this utility you can conve Bilingual Typing Facility In APS Designer 4.0 you can type bilingual (biscript) text, in particular fonts. By selecting vendor as 'APS Corporate Office. Chitragupt Word processing in Text and Rich text format with all basic facilities, this editor comes with support for translation of text from one script to another . It has a build in dictionary for translation of text in different scripts. The user dictionary can be used to build word bank neccessary for translation of scripts. The editor comes with all defaults necessary for billingual text processing. You can send emails in devnagari scripts or save files in html format. Shabdankan Shabdankan is a simple user friendly and powerful utility for those who find it difficult to type in Indian scripts (Devnagari / Gujarati). In this utility you can type in English and the text is converted in Indian scripts depending on selected language. The translated text can be copied to any other application you want or also the created / edited file can be saved. The utility translates the text using the typing sequences some of which are displayed on the right hand side of the screen. However, a complete list can be obtained using the help menu Any simple text file, which is typed in this sequence, can be opened in the application and is translated in the Indian script. The utility has editing options similar to that of other word editor.

2 Setup and Installation Contents of the package APS Designer 4.0 CD-Rom APS Lock floppy User’s Manual Registration Card Machine Sticker
Product Registration VSPL assumes that users agrees to the license conditions. Please furnish all details in the enclosed registration card and return the same to VSPL at the earliest. Please note down the Registration Number, and paste the machine Sticker supplied with the package on your machine for future reference and technical support. Registration ensures user for entitlement to receive upgrades of existing APS products and new products as & when launched, at a reasonable cost. Users will be informed about upgrades of APS package from time to time. Always remember to inform your Registration number for any kind of support. No support of any kind will be given if you have not send the registration card.
Protection Scheme APS contains software lock. The package is licensed for one machine only. For installing on second machine you must uninstall the software from the first machine.

Software requirements Prerequisites for use of APS software APS software is a 32bit interface to MS Windows thus it requires MS Windows 95, 98 or MS WIndows NT installed in the machine. APS software supports MS Windows based application software like Adobe PageMaker, CorelDraw, MS Office, Lotus SmartSuite, MS Visual FoxPro and rest alike.
Installation of APS Software Please ensure before installing APS Software: a. Please exit all the software operating under Windows before commencing installation of APS Software. b. Virus protector program is not loaded. If loaded please disable Virus protector program while installing APS Software. APS Installation procedure consists of Lock

Transfer operation which some of the Virus protector programs will not allow to perform. You can enable the Virus protector just after APS Installation is completed. c. Machine should be virus free, otherwise APS Software will not be installed properly. d. Please exit all the software operating under Windows before commencing installation of APS Software. Installation of APS software is similar to that of any other package or utilities to be added to Windows environment.
Installation Procedure Select Start, Run and type D:\setup.exe (where D is CD Drive Letter). a. SETUP program will start with a welcome screen as shown in figure # 2.1.

b. SETUP program will ask to read the License Areement as shown in figure # 2.2. Read this agreement carefully before proceeding. Click on “I Accept” to continue the installation.

c. SETUP program will ask for the installation directory as shown in figure # 2.3. Setup will install APS Designer 4.0 files under c:\Program Files\aps40 directory by default. If you prefer to install APS software in different directory, change the directory using “Change Direcotry” button.

d. The screen shown in Figure # 2.4 will appear. Enter the directory name and press OK. In the event of invalid path/directory (it contains invalid drive letters etc. or you do not have access or read/write permission to that path) setup program will not proceed until proper path/directory is given.

e. Setup will ask to specify the program group name as shown in Figure # 2.5. Press Continue to start copying the files.

After completing the files copy operation, setup will ask for APS lock floppy before transfering copy protection. Insert the floppy disk named APS Lock floppy, select the drive letter from the dialog box as shown in Figure # 2.6 and press OK.

Note If any error occurs while transfering lock from APS Lock Floppy to hard disk, setup will display an error message as shown in Figure # 2.7.

g. Confirm that the proper APS Lock floppy is inserted in the selected drive, and it /is not write protected, and press retry. If the APS Lock floppy contains no count (the software is being installed 2 times without uninstallation) then the following message as shown in Figure # 2.8 will appear (Refer the trouble shooting chapter). Press OK to continue.

APS Designer 4.0 offers you library of True Type fonts and ATM fonts. After transferring the APS-Lock Setup will display following message as shown in Figure #2.9

After selecting Type of font to install press OK to Continue Setup will display following message as shown in Figure #2.10 depend on the type of fonts you have selected.

Setup will create APS group and necessary icons. Setup procedure maintains some system informations and interaction with Windows files. On successfull installation Setup will display the follwing message as shown in Figure #2.11.

Installation for Network Ensure following for Installation under Novel Netware: a. Windows is installed properly for Novel Netware. b
User should posses proper login rights for executing setup.exe
c. If you have to install the software from the diskless node then you must create a logical 'C' drive using MAP command, before installing APS software. To install the software on server hard disk a. Run (CD Drive Letter):\SETUP. from APS Software CD. b. Change the default installation directory name with the required server hard disk directory path (e.g h:\aps40 ). The user should have all access rights for this particular directory. Installation for different User IDs c. Run the Setup.exe from APS Designer 4.0 CD. d. Type the same installation directory name for each user ID (e.g. h:\aps40 in this case) so that setup will overwrite previous contents of this directory each time. e. Restart the Windows for a particular user ID for changes to take effect.

3 Operation After restarting the Windows the APS Desktop manager will be displayed on the left top corner of the screen.

APS Desktop Manager is a convenient and efficient way to work with APS software. APS Desktop Buttons are provided for on-line functionality while working with other applications. Please note that, for basic bilingual functionality the APS Desktop Manager should be contineously running you should not close this application. All the APS utilities can be loaded using this Desktop Manager.
ABOUT APS This button provides information about the APS software like package name, version number, version date etc.
Script Indicator Button: Script indicator button is used for toggling between English and Indian Scripts. The default script is English
. By clicking this button you can select Indian script. In

case of Devnagari it will display . In case of Gujrati it will display Switching between scripts is also possible by pressing ‘5’ key on numeric pad, while Num Lock is off. Select Vendor Button Using this button you can select vendor which enables you to type in selected vendor's font. You can select vendor name through this button from given list.
Select Indian Script: By clicking this button you can see available languages of selected vendor. You can select language of vendor in which you want to type, through this button e.g. for APS vendor languages are Devnagari, Gujrati, Vedic etc. The table of different languages available under different vendor are : APS

Select Keyboard Layout: APS Designer 4.0 gives you variety in selecting Keyboard Layouts of your choice. Using this button you can select any keyboard layout suitable for you, from listed keyboard layouts. A menu appears when you click this button which shows various keyboard layouts available for a particular vendor for a particular language. Choose the layout of your choice from this menu. The selected layout typing will be effective whenever toggle button of Desktop Manager is showing Indian Language character e.g. You can use this menu as any other menu in Windows. Select the layout of your choice by clicking with the mouse, using arrow keys or pressing the underligned character. Selected keyboard will have 'Check Mark'. To Select and Type using particular Vendor's Font - Load an applicatiom program in which you want to type in Indian Languages. - Select a Vendor of your choice in which you want use the font of that vendor. - Select the Language from Language Menu. - And Finally select Keyboard Layout of your choice from the keyboard list. - in the application package select the font of that particular vendor. or select the respective font supplied by VSOFT as shown in table below. Keyboard Layout Viewer: Displays currently selected Keyboard Layout. Selecting particular layout will automatically change the layout displayed. The right top corner of Layout Viewer will show the keyboard name, language name and layout name e.g. (APS Devnagari Godrej) where 'APS' is vendor name, 'Devnagari' is language and 'Godrej' is keyboard layout name. If you change a language then the previous selected layout of that particular language will be displayed in that particular language. If you select any other vendor then keyboard of that particular vendor of the selected language will be displayed. Detailed information of this utility is given in APS Utilities chapter.
Format Conversion Wizard: Format Conversion Wizard is a utility to convert files from various DOS based text editors to APS format. Detailed explanation is given under Utilities chapter.
Mega Text Conversion: This button gives you option to select Mega Conversion for vendor you want. If you run "Mega Text Conversion 1" and could not found Vendor name for which you want conversion, you check requiered name in "Mega Text Conversion 2". APS Keypad: APS Keypad is a unique utility which assist you to type in Indian Scripts, with the help of APS Keypad you can easily learn any Indian Script's Keyboard Layouts which is provided in APS Designer 4.0. APS Keypad displays different keyboard layout selected by you in 'APS Desktop Manager'. Using this utility you can type in most of the popular Windows based application with mouse.

Adobe Photoshop Other Select the appropriate package name depending on the working application.
Help On APS software: This button provides On-line help for using APS desktop manager and its utilities both in English and Hindi. To view Hindi help select the required sub-menu from the ‘Help in Hindi’ menu.

4 Standard Settings for Indian Script Please incorporate following settings as indicated in the following charts for obtaining correct and efficient results in Indian Script mode.
Microsoft Word 97 Click AutoCorrect (Tools menu) select AutoCorrect tab and clear the different check boxes as shown in figure # 4.1

Click AutoFormat (Format menu) click Option button and clear the various check boxes as shown in figure # 4.2

Click Options (Tools menu) and select Spelling & Grammer tab. In Spelling section clear Check spelling as you type check box. In Grammar section clear Check grammar as you type check box as shown in figure # 4.4

While viewing the document in Normal view (select Normal (View menu)), click Options (Tools menu) and select View tab and clear the Draft Font check box. In same View tab clear all check boxes under Nonprinting characters option as shown in figure

Placing a file To place the text saved in wri, rtf or doc format or the text converted through Format Conversion Wizard (described in APS utilities chapter) select Place (File menu), select a file to be placed (e.g. c:\apsjobs\apstest) and clear Convert Quotes check box as shown in figure # 4.6

Setting Preferences Select Preferences, General (File menu), select More button. In More Preferences Window, clear Use typographer's Quotes check box in Text tab. Select APS font from Font list in Story Editor as shown in figure # 4.7.

Lower versions of PageMaker For PageMaker 4.0 / 5.0 above menu options are as follows: a. For Placing a file select Place (File menu) and clear Convert Quotes check box. b. For setting preferences, select Preferences (File menu) click Others button. Clear Use typographer's quotes option from Text tab. Select APS font in Font list from Story Editor tab.

CorelDraw Using ‘Fit Text to Path’ Fit Text to path tool in CorelDraw can be used for Indian scripts upto certain limits. To overcome this problem use ‘Edit Envelope’ (For more detaile refer CorelDraw 8.0 manual). Or use Adobe Illustrator for desired effects. Select Type Assist (Text menu) and clear all the check boxes as shown in Figure # 4.8.

5 Standard Operating Steps Load the application software you want to work with (e.g. MS Word). For typing with APS: 1. Using
button, select the vendor you want to work with.

6 Uninstallation and Reinstallation In case of following circumstances a. You need to reload Windows due to improper working b. Machine is affected with virus & you have to format the hard disk c. You need to replace the hard disk You must first uninstall the APS Software before performing the above step so that the installation count gets recovered. If not the installation count will be lost. If you exhaust both the installation counts you will not be able to install the software again. It's advisable to first uninstall the APS software before performing the above step.
Uninstall Please ensure before uninstalling : a. APS Desktop Manager is already closed, if not exit it. b. APS Lock floppy is not write protected. (floppy media) c. APS registration number on the machine sticker is matching with the installation CDRom. d. No virus protector program loaded. If yes please disable Virus protector program before uninstalling APS Software. APS uninstallation procedure consists of Lock Transfer operation which some of the Virus protector programs will not allow to perform. e
Machine should be virus free, otherwise Lock Transfer operation will not be performed during uninstallation.

Please exit all the software operating under Windows before commencing uninstallation of APS Software.
To uninstall APS software, a. From APS Designer 4.0 Group click Uninstall APS Designer 4.0. Or from control panel, Add/Remove programs select APS Designer 4.0 to uninstall the software. b. Select 'Yes' to continue uninstallation from the dialog box shown in figure # 6.1.

To add a word to users dictionary Click the Add button, enter the english word and respective hindi or gujrati word and press update to save the entry. To modify an existing word of dictionary Click the Modify button to enter the modify mode, make changes to the hindi or gujrati word and press update to save the changes made. To cancel changes press the cancel button. To delete an entry of word Move to the word to delete and press the Delete button.

Shabdankan: Shabdankan is a simple user friendly and powerful utility for those who find it difficult to type in Indian scripts (Devnagari / Gujarati). In this utility you can type in English and the text is converted in Indian scripts depending on selected language. The translated text can be copied to any other application you want or also the created / edited file can be saved. The utility translates the text using the typing sequences some of which are displayed on the right hand side of the screen. However, a complete list can be obtained using the help menu. Any simple text file, which is typed in this sequence, can be opened in the application and is translated in the Indian script. The utility has editing options similar to that of other word editor.

Copy Language Text This button when clicked copies the language text into the clipboard which can be pasted in any other application . For pasting the data in any other windows based application Use ‘copy language text’ button. Paste the data in the application you want. Ensure the correct font in the said application is used. For devnagari data select the copied text and change the font to any of the APS Designer 4.0 devnagari font family. For Gujarati data select the copied text and change the font to any of the APS Dsigner gujarati font family. Using other Text editor files File from any text editor should be in text format (.txt). If you are using a shabdankan file, which allows .eng and .hnd formats. Use .eng extension for opening the file.
APS Keypad : APS Keypad is a unique utility which assist you to type in Indian Scripts, with the help of APS Keypad you can easily learn any Indian Script's Keyboard Layouts which is provided in APS Designer 4.0. APS Keypad displays different keyboard layout selected by you in 'APS Desktop Manager'. Using this utility you can type in most of the popular Windows based application with mouse.

After clicking APS Keypad button of Desktop Manager it shows menu containing following items Start APS Keypad Set Application Window Always on top Start APS Keypad This item starts APS Keypad. You can see pad which is similar to normal English keyboard as shown below in figure #7.9.

APS Keypad displays keyboard layout of selected language in selected vendor's font. If current mode of Desktop Manager is English i.e. 'Script Indicator Button' is showing then APS Keypad will display English characters, otherwise it will display characters corresponding to language. By moving mouse on each button it will display characters of all four positions (i.e. normal, shift, alt, alt+shift) for that button. User can get display of individual position by simply clicking or pressing Alt or Shift keys.

You can type in desired application with mouse using APS Keypad, for that you have to set application window. Without setting application window if you clicked on any button of the APS Keypad it will show message as shown below in Figure #7.15

Set Application Window To type in any application using APS Keypad user have to select application window in which user want to type, to select window user have to select "Set Application Window" item. After selecting this item mouse cursor will get change to

indicating that the user should select application window by clicking in it, in which user want to type. Always on Top By selecting this option you can set attribute APS Keypad windw as ‘Always on top’. Which keeps APS keypad on top of all window.
Lock Transfer Utility Using Lock Transfer utility you can easily transfer APS-Lock from Hard Disk to APS Lock Floppy and vice versa. While installing APS-Software if by any means APS Lock doesn’t get transferred then you can use this utility to transfer the APS Lock. To run this program select item ‘APS Designer 4.0 Uninstall’ from APS Designer 4.0 program group, you’ll see interface as shown in Figure #7.16

‘Hard Disk Directory’ box shows current path of APS Designer 4.0 where it has been installed. ‘APS lock Floppy Drive’ gives you option to select the drive name where you have inserted APS Lock Floppy. If you want to transfer the lock from hard disk to Lock Floppy press ‘Hard Disk To Floppy’ button, if you want to transfer the lock from floppy to hard disk then press Floppy to Hard Disk’ button’. After transferring the lock ‘Lock Transfer Utility will display how many counts remaining on your Master Disk as shown in Figure # 7.17

8 TROUBLE SHOOTING Cribs and Solution c1. After installation, while reloading the Windows for the first time following message comes, Copy Protection error no. 028 Run CCMOVE to create a working copy r.
This message is because of the signature was not transferred to hard disk due to any of the following reason. a. APS Lock Floppy may be write protected. b. Machine is having some virus protector program installed, OR machine contains virus itself.
s . Confirm that APS Lock Floppy is not write protected. Disable any virus protector program if installed. Check for the virus in the machine. Then install the package again (first uninstall the package). For more details see “Please ensure before installing APS Software” subsection from “Installation of APS Software” section from “Setup and Installation” chapter.
