Material verification requirements (7.4.6) •

Issue: Per the current NDE requirements language a Landing Nipple or Lock Mandrel (where both can act as a barrier) that is manufactured by a tubular (wrought ) product and has a design safety factor of at least 1.11 would not be required to have raw material verification (i.e. UT) nor surface defect verification (i.e. surface NDE) at all. In addition, 14L does not require pressure testing.

The reason for the above is a two-fold: 1. 14L uses critically stressed component terminology to drive material verification activities (Just like API 11D1 uses ‘Type 1’). However, critically stressed components is defined as “Critically stressed components are those which are stressed to 90 % or greater of the minimum design yield strength of the material ”.  2.

Section 7.4.6.1 d) excludes wrought products (only covers forgings and castings). What this means is that all mechanical tubulars / coupling stock , bar is not required to be UT inspected.
