Introduction
ANSI/TIA-1179-2010 addresses cabling structures in health care buildings. Regarding cabling structure in general it references the current TIA standards on cabling. ANSI/TIA-1179-2010 does NOT define specific data channels or cabling structures but it adheres to the relevant standards for office premises, residential areas, data centers and industrial buildings in this respect. The purpose of the standard is to provide input and considerations for planning and installation, taking into consideration that additional factors need to be taken into account regarding maintenance, modifications, expansions and upgrades when it comes to cabling health care buildings. Much more so than for an office building for example. It is thus important to be forward-looking in the planning and installation and to include future requirements.

Cabling structure
The cabling structure is identical to the one described in the standards ANSI/TIA 568-C (customer premises) ANSI/TIA 570-B (residential) and ANSI/TIA 1005 (industrial premises). The standard lists several "physical elements", which differ in their application. The way they are linked to the data network, however, does not vary from regular structured cabling systems.
To illustrate the star configuration, the standard presents the example on the left. Legend:

For new installations the standard recommends either Cat 6A / Cat 6a for copper cabling or multimode for fiber optic cabling. The standard repeatedly stresses the importance of taking future adaptations in the network in health care buildings into account in the planning and installation work (floor space requirements).

Differences compared to the standards on structured cabling (e.g. TIA 568-C) Forward-looking planning
The standard underlines the significance of forward-looking planning regarding expansions, adaptations, etc. of the network without interfering with network operation, elaborating all aspect in a specific chapter, namely chapter 9, Work Area. In this chapter the standard defines different work-area classifications of the rooms and services connected to the network and characterizes them as "low-", "medium-" or "high-" density work areas (L, M and H). In an exemplary manner, the standard adds that the list provided is not complete and needed to be considered on a case by case basis:

These recommendations once again underline one of the key points of the standard, namely to include future requirements and not be limited to the number of telecommunications outlets needed at the time of planning.

3.2
Operational environment
To a greater extent than the already known TIA standards for structured cabling (e.g. ANSI/TIA-568-C.1 for commercial premises), the standard points out that locally higher electromagnetic interference has to be expected in hospital environments, for example in the vicinity of a magnetic resonance scanner, an X-ray machine or electric equipment in the intensive care unit. The standard also calls attention to the fact that locally occurring chemical loads or temperature fluctuations can have their effect on the cabling equipment. The standard, however, does not issue any limit values or recommendations (unlike the ANSI/TIA 1005 for industrial premises for example), but only concludes this section with the remark that "cabling needed to be positioned in a way that minimized these effects...".

Specific health care standards in acc. to IEC or EN
Neither ISO/IEC nor EN offer specific standards on cabling structures of health care facilities. In their standards on office premises, industrial facilities, data centers and residential cabling, both standardization bodies point out that these standards are also applicable "for example for health care buildings".
