The head is crocheted in rounds and put to one side. The face is worked in rows and then joined to the head by crocheting into the stitches of both pieces at the same time. The head is continued in short rows to shape the top, beginning with a small number of stitches and then working Into an extra stitch at each end of every row. The neck is worked in rounds, and the chest is shaped by working short rows. The white markings on the face are worked in rows and the whiskery detail is formed by crocheting a number of half-treble and treble stitches into one stitch or a loop of chain stitches. When stitched to the head, the line of the last row forms the llne of the mouth. The base is made f rom two circular crocheted pieces, joined together to form a pocket for a circular piece of board, to keep it firm. The ears are made in two pieces, worked in rows, which are
To crochet the scallops, rotate the
work so the posts of the tieble stitches are horizontal. To crochet around the post of the treble, insert the hook between the set of 2tr sts, f rom the f ront, around the back of the post of the tr and out to the f ront of the work, before crocheting each stitch (see illustration for the swan on page 74). joined by crocheting into the stitches of both pieces at the same time. Mount board is cut to size and folded down the middle to shape it, before inserting one into each ear to keep them rigid. The eyes are crocheted in rounds and the eyelids worked in rows. The pupils are embroidered on. The nose is worked in rounds. The piece is flattened and the stitches at the top joined together. Each corner of the top edge is stitched to the narrow end to shape the nose and form the nostrils and septum. A small lining is crocheted and inserted into the nose to keep its shape. The chest f ur is crocheted in rows. Treble stitches are worked around the posts of the stitches on the previous round to form layered scallops. The features are stitched on to the main form, and the fox is finished with nylon whiskers hooked into the top lip and a crocheted loop to hang it up.

Method The head, neck and chest are worked in one piece, in rounds and rows of double crochet. The shaping at the top of the head and the f ront of the chest is done by working short rows, starting with a small number of stitches crocheted into the previous round, and then crocheting into an extra stitch on each end of every row. The base consists of two crocheted circular pieces that are crocheted together to form a pocket In

which mount board is inserted to keep it frrm. This is crocheted onto the lower edges of the stuffed main piece of the ram. The ears and muzzle are worked in rounds and stitched onto the head. A couple of stitches are sewn f rom the nose to the lower lip to form the split
top llp. The eyeballs and sockets are crocheted in one piece, with the eyelid formed by working double crochet into the f ront loops of the upper line of stitches and slip stitching into the lower lid. The horizontal pupils of the eyes are embroidered. The horns are crocheted in rows, increasing the stitches to form the curved shape, and finished with two short rows of dou ble crochet to shape the lower end. The seam is joined by crocheting into each stitch on both sides

The head, neck and body are wbrked in one piece in rounds and rows of double crochet. Starting at the top of the head, the rounds are increased and then divided to continue the head and neck of the swan. The bill is attached to the head by working into the stitches of both pieces at the same time. The trlangular-shaped markings on each side of the face are worked in rows f rom the round that joined the billto the head. The shaping is done by crocheting short rows, starting with a small number of stitches at the f ront of the swan and then working into an extra stitch at both ends of each row to create a curve in the body. The circular base is made in two pieces with mount board sandwiched between them to keep it frrm. A metal ring is crocheted around and stitched to the base so the swan can be hung on the wall. The feathers are made in two panels that are sewn on to the body. Three sizes of hook are used to form the small, medium and large feathers. The eyes, and the nail and knob on the bill, are crocheted separately and stitched In place. The features are finished with embroidered nostrils and a line_of chain stitch a rou nd the edges of the blll.
