About the Arranger Warren Massey has a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Kansas State Teacher’s College at Emporia and a Master of Music Education degree from the University of Kansas. He taught music at both the elementary and secondary levels from 1955 to 1966 after which he left teaching for a 28-year career with the Social Security Administration. He is now retired. Although trained with no particular music specialty, he has always been interested in music theory and took as many arranging and composition courses as he could. He provided pieces for his choral groups while teaching and has also done so for church and secular choirs with which he has sung. In the Kansas City area Warren has sung with such varied groups as the Fine Arts Chorale, the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quarter Singing in America and the Civic Opera Theater of Kansas City (formerly known as The Meistersingers). He presently sings with the William Baker Festival Singers.

About this arrangement of “Angels We Have Heard On High” This traditional French carol is found in most hymn books with four verses, each followed by a florid melismatic refrain harmonized with sequential chords. The melody for the verse consists of one phrase with an exact repeat. If constrained to preserve the exact melody, the arranger is challenged to incorporate variety as the verses unfold. This arrangement overcomes this difficulty by building an extra measure during the second phrase of the verse melody, offering opportunities for variety in performance. The version of this verse was found in the 1932 Methodist Hymnal. Also, the downard sequential harmonization of the “Gloria” has been arranged with many variations over the years. This arrangement offers some of those harmonic variations.

Angels We Have Heard On High Angels we have heard on high sweetly singing o’er the plains, And the mountains in reply echoingtheir joyous strains. Gloria in excelsis Deo. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be which inspire your heav’nly song? Gloria in excelsis Deo. Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing. Come adore on bended knee Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria in excelsis Deo.
