Golden Oldies When freshmen of spirituality enter the scene of evolutionary development, they are usually struck by how much more advanced some of the ancient mystics seemed to be, in comparison to what exists in the modern world. It can be startling to realize that the mystics of old, from thousands of years ago, had more powerful abilities and a richer, more-detailed understanding of the Greater Reality and the human energy body than we have today. I think that this, at least in part, was due to the mystics of old having vastly fewer distractions. They lived a heavily-grounded agricultural existence, had no TV, radio, computers, Internet, and had enormous amounts of quality time on their hands… time to meditate and practice and talk and THINK and explore subtle energies and dimensions. This also applies to spiritual practitioners up until the late 1950’s, who also lived much simpler lives. They had radio, but no TV or Computers or Internet. I worked with some of the old spiritualists in my early days. They told me that it was normal for people to gather in groups for several hours of spiritual practice every night. They sat on stools and wooden benches, meditating and practicing and generally communing with spirit together. Looking back at some of the greatest spiritual mediums of our time…like, Estelle Roberts and Helen Duncan, it is easy to think that they must have had something, some knowledge or ability that we lack today. But in truth, I think the key ingredient here is that they had far more free TIME on their hands than people do today.

It dawns on new practitioners that they stand on the border of entering a world of occult and obscure knowledge and practices. And a lot of what they are learning comes from long ago. Typically, they have to start excavating like an archaeologist, digging through large piles of books, information, and resources, just to find a few nuggets of golden truth that WORK... to even begin to put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Taking The Red Pill The budding practitioner stands at a fork in the road... do they continue traveling down the largely unpaved, uncharted road of raw spirituality, or do they take the worn out paths of modern science and religion. At some point in spiritual development, all honest practitioners must ask themselves: Do I keep going, because I know in my heart that it’s right, or do I deny my intuition and stick to the “approved” story of life? Just how far down the rabbit hole do I go? What happens if I take the red pill? In case you don’t know, the “red pill” metaphor is a popular experience that spiritualists, magickians, and mystics have. In the movie, “The Matrix” the lead role, Neo, is plucked from his normal life and given a chance to decide whether or not he wants to learn the *REAL TRUTH* about reality and existence. The bearer of his opportunity, Morpheus, provides him this choice in the form of two options: Neo can swallow either a red pill, or a blue pill. The red pill of course is his voluntary agreement to find out the real truth, and the blue pill would be his opting out.

Here’s the exact quote from Morpheus, taken right from the script:

“This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.” This is strikingly close to the experience most mystics have when they wake up, once and for all, to the truth that the wool has been pulled over their eyes their whole lives. And by taking the red pill, they are removing the wool, and REALLY using their eyes for the first time. Think about this. The “average” human being has never used her Third Eye for clairvoyant vision. She’s never used her Third Ear for clairaudient hearing. She’s never gone out of body, or explored the Afterlife. She’s never tapped into her tremendous power to heal or influence energy. She’s never seen or felt her own energy body! She’s never communicated with her own Higher Self! It’s sad. And we need to change that. We need to start a revolution of the mind inside our species, and help everyone to wake up to the truth... that they are immortal consciousness, operating a physical body temporarily, with the mental power to change reality. You cannot meditate on this beautiful fact enough. It is, after all, a fact and not speculation.

It’s been proven over and over and over again by psychics and mystics since time immemorial. And you must REFUSE to let the programming of contemporary science and religion hold you back. Liberate yourself and LIVE in truth! The Greater Reality awaits! Like a saint, embodying truth and moral virtue in EVERYTHING you do. This alone will have REMARKABLE effects on the health and well-being of your mind and energy body… and your Higher Self connection. Let’s move on now to look at some of the most useful lessons we can learn by studying our predecessors, the ancient mystics from whom we inherited much of our wisdom, and the hunger for truth.

Soulful Solitude With any penetrating glimpse into the practices of mystics, a common theme appears, and that is the leading mystics and psychics always went off on their own for significant periods of time, to “find themselves”. Now we hear the catchphrase “find myself” occasionally. What it means is to *GO INSIDE* the mind, to meditate, and to learn their truth. The truth about self and the truth about the world, and how all this fits in with the Greater Spiritual Reality. Much to the disillusion of westerners, packing up and selling all their possessions and “heading off to Tibet or India” can be a useless exercise. Those people are taking the phrase “finding yourself” too literally, as if they have to go to other locations to accomplish this. And for some

reason, they always think they need to go East, and not North or South or West. But in the Greater Reality, to “find themselves” they need to STOP TALKING, SIT DOWN, and MEDITATE! You are what you are *INSIDE YOURSELF* and NOT OUTSIDE somewhere else. The *YOU* they are searching for is INTERNAL, not external. So if you’re following my logic, you now understand why going to any external place to try to find yourself is unworkable. I know people who are paying off CAVES in India, where they plan to live and find enlightenment… when they have the free time to do this… or when they retire. This is more escapism than anything spiritually real. People want to escape the pressures and strains of mundane life by escaping to a lifestyle they have come to believe is spiritually idyllic. I also know people who have actually done the cave thing. Trust me here… a year or so living with dirt and bugs, with poor quality food and no running water and electricity sends most people running for home. YOU ARE INSIDE yourself and nowhere else. And guess what? When you finally realize that you need to start going within to find yourself, it dawns on you that you’ll need to find solitude to do this. You’ve spent your whole life “outside” yourself doing things... sports, music, school, ballgames, television, movies, dates, dinners, travel, and so on.

It’s time now to go inside yourself, and begin doing activities internally, inside your mind. These activities involve PSYCHIC ABILITIES. What does clairvoyance, astral projection, healing, and energy work all have in common? They all require you to be INTERNAL, to internalize your attention, to perform them. The bright light bulb of realization turns on above your head RIGHT NOW - as you go “Aha!” I need to go INSIDE more often and for longer. People are generally unhappy because they never go inside themselves. They’re too distracted by external life on the outside. The secret to happiness is making progress inside yourself, through meditation and spiritual development. And to meditate - to go inside - you’ll need to be somewhere you can be undisturbed and undistracted by the outside world. If there is one MAJOR LESSON I want you to take away from this, it’s that the ancient mystics figured this out and tried to tell us. They would say things like “The truth is inside you” or “Find yourself within” or “Be still and know that I AM within”. They are being literal. They’re saying, “Turn off the television. Sit down. Be quiet. Close your eyes. And do the meditation that you know.” Being still and going within during meditation will

help connect you to your Higher Self. This will help you to get answers to your questions psychically. Hence, they say, “All the answers are inside you.” Hanging out on forums and chatting with friends about spirituality is all good, but there comes a time when you must go and do the practice. This is how you get results, find yourself, and open the blossom of your psychic abilities. Set aside a private space in your home, and tell your housemates to respect your privacy and give you time alone there. One of the so-called “virtues” of our society is “socialization”. For some reason, if a person does not like socializing they are considered “wrong” or “crazy”. But the truth is, while socialization has benefits, we also need alone time for internal development. You need to withdraw from too much social time, and create some personal time where you can be alone with your thoughts and spiritual practices. Let’s move on to explore the power of respiration and how it will improve your meditation.

Respiration for Inspiration Another clue the ancients left for us, is to harness the power of breathing. We are continually breathing and life depends on this. But very few understand the spiritual power of conscious breathing. Conscious control of your breathing gives you conscious control over your life force. Doing this will

gently guide you into profound altered states of consciousness. Respiration leads to inspiration. By respiring according to a very simple and ancient method, you will shift into an altered state and feel great in the process. This method takes a little practice to master…not because it is difficult but simply because it is different. Your body will want to go back to its natural way of breathing. But it will soon adapt to new patterns of breathing if you persevere. The body awareness focus on a particular breathing pattern, as opposed to unconscious natural breathing, is an essential ingredient to this method. This focus occupies the mind and makes it easier to quieten unwanted thoughts, and to induce an altered state of consciousness. A clear and relaxed mind is the goal. EXERCISE: Respiration For Inspiration Breathe from your ABDOMEN throughout your meditation, and not from your chest. Your awareness should be focused on the movement in your abdomen. Breathe in through your mouth and out through your nose. (Yes, this contradicts modern breathing techniques of in through the nose, out through the mouth) In the beginning, you will have to regulate your breathing by counting in your mind. With practice, the counting will become unnecessary and you will be able to regulate your breathing pattern automatically. Physical Relaxation: If you are tense, start by focusing your body awareness sense on different areas of your body and feeling them relax. Focus on your feet and legs and “feel”

them relax, then your hips, then your torso, then your arms and shoulders, then your neck and head. Breathing Technique: - Sit with proper posture, shoulders back, head tilted slightly forwards, hands in your lap. - Inhale through your MOUTH slowly for a 4-count, hold it for a 2-count, exhale through your NOSE for a 4-count. - Feel yourself automatically shifting into a deep inspiring altered state as you respire with this pattern. The takeaway here is to inhale through the mouth, and exhale through the nose. And try to make the period of holding the breath in your lungs between inhalation and exhalation half the length of the inhalation and exhalation. This technique is PROVEN to put you into a nice trance state for entering meditation. It will melt away physical tension and loosen you up. It’s that simple, folks. No need for any complicated breathing techniques. It is important that the breathing pattern you use does NOT cause stress. Again, the breathing pattern must not cause stress or shortness of breath, or anxiety, as this will cause tension and defeat the purpose of this as a meditation technique. It is important that you focus on your breath, on the feeling of air filling your abdomen, holding, and leaving your abdomen.

This technique will put you into a nice altered state meditation fairly quickly. It will melt away physical and mental tension and loosen you up considerably. Alternative Method: There is another very simple alternative called Belly Breathing that everyone can perform easily. With this method, you breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. Do what works for you, while following the pattern given here. Just observe your natural breathing, feeling your abdomen rise and fall as you breathe in and out, and continue with this only. Keep your awareness focused on your abdomen at all times. Again, everything else still applies. Try this method as an alternative. Its simplicity and effectiveness might surprise you, and you will still achieve an altered state.

Spiritual Practice During meditation, your mind will want to wander and play, and at times you will lose track of what you are doing and find yourself thinking about a problem or fantasizing. This is called ‘monkey mind’. Do not force your mind to obey you. Meditation is a gentle and relaxed process. When you catch your mind wandering off, allow yourself to follow the distracting train of thought until it completes, and then rewind your memory back to where the loss of focus started and continue your meditation from there.

Meditation can have a focus beyond breathing. You can focus on a candle flame through slitted eyes, a thought, a concept, a sound, an image, a scene. But it is best to master the breathing method first. Meditation can be done anywhere and anytime… while commuting, waiting, even while walking. But best results are obtained when you use your own private space at home. To increase the effects of any breathing meditation technique, imagine and feel that you are in a big mining elevator with open sides to the rock, and that you are going down, down, down. . . When you use the same private space frequently for meditation, the power of that space increases progressively. This helps to produce more profound altered states of consciousness. If you are new to meditation, slow and easy is the best way to begin. Do not overdo things in the beginning. Start with 5 minute sessions, once or twice per day, and increase this time as you become used to this new state of being. We are more likely to do things that we are successful at doing, and this applies to meditation. So please start with short meditations and do not try to run before you can walk. Early morning is the most productive time to meditate, because your mind is still fresh and your body is still relaxed from recent sleep. But meditation can be done anytime you need to recharge and distress… so take advantage of opportunities that present themselves during your day to day life for short refreshing meditations. notes!

Meditation is an important journey within, so take

Keeping a journal of your meditations is very helpful. Write down your thoughts and experiences immediately after each meditation. To this end, keep your meditation journal nearby during meditation sessions. Altered state memory is a fickle thing and meditation experiences will tend to vaporize quickly after a meditation. Recording meditation experiences will help you progress. Always write down key words first when you make a journal entry, in case these memories evaporate before you have time to write them down. Then write the full account of your session, and your thoughts about what happened and how you think you are progressing. Keeping a meditation journal will also help to improve all other types of subtle memory, including dream and out-of-body experience recall. A sitting position with a straight back and no head support is superior to using a bed. A simple dining or office chair will suffice, unless you prefer to sit cross legged. Too much comfort during a meditation promotes sleep and poor recall of the experience. Use dark glasses if you take advantage of free time while waiting or commuting during your day for meditation. The dark glasses provide a sense of privacy. You can also hold a book or magazine on your lap, so it looks as if you are reading. When I started doing this many years ago, I cut the eyes out of a magazine picture, poked small holes in the irises, and fitted these inside my dark glasses so it looked like my eyes were open. But it is advisable, if you do this, to pick eye pictures that are looking down, or people will think you are staring unblinkingly at them.

Let’s move into the third and final ancient secret for modern mystics...

Tears Of Joy As I explained, most people are unhappy due to their addiction to the external world, rather than the internal world. And there is another factor at play. Too many people are unappreciative of both their external and internal worlds. So they not only don’t USE their internal world, they’re CERTAINLY not THANKFUL for it. The ancient mystics teach a message of happiness and gratitude through spirituality. And you’ll find the most upbeat, optimistic and productive people are ALWAYS people who have a deep purpose, like we find in spirituality. Our mystical ancestors IMPLORED us to take time to be thankful for our minds and bodies. Because when we do, we will associate good feelings to our practices, which in turn makes us want to spend more time on them. People will ALWAYS prefer to do something that makes them feel good over something that makes them feel bad. This is the key to dedication to spirituality. When you take time to attach APPRECIATION to your work, you’ll FEEL BETTER ABOUT IT, and thus be naturally drawn to DO MORE. The fastest way I know for you to naturally associate positive feelings for meditation and psychic work, rather than annoying feelings, is to GET RESULTS.
