Analysis of LAZARILLO DE TORMES Chap6 & 7

 

SUMMARY CHAPTER 6 This is a short tratado in which Lázaro serves two masters. The first is a painter whom he mixes colours for. Although nothing much is said about him, according to lazaro he suffered with him as well. His second master is a chaplain who provides him a job as a water seller. This is his first real job and earns a good living through it .During the four years he served the chaplain he is able to earn enough to buy second hand clothes and an old sword. Lázaro abandons the work upon seeing himself dresses as an honourable man. CHAPTER 7 After leaving the chaplain he serves a constable but abandoned him due to the dangers involved with dealing with criminals. With the help of friends he finds himself an official as town crier. This involves announcing wine for sale accompanying criminal for punishment and broadcasting the ofence.Pleased with his achievement he says, Me ha sucedido tan bien, yo le he usado tan fácilmente, que casi  todas las cosas al oficio tocantes pasan por mi mano. Tanto, que, en toda la ciudad, el que ha de echar vino a vender, o algo, si Lázaro de Tormes no entiende en ello, hacen cuenta de no sacar provecho . After being noticed by the Archpriest he agrees to his offer of marrying his maid. There is rumour of an affair between the Archpriest and his wife after the two denied it, it is agreed between the three this issue will not be mentioned again .It is through this that we get to know what the ‘el caso’ mentioned mentioned in the prologue means, means, that is the rumour rumoured ed affair between his wife and the archpriest. For anyone that speaks on ‘el caso’ Lázaro cuts him off or threatens to kill him.

THEMES Honour When Lázaro begins to dress honourable like the squire he feels proud and considers himself  abve the task of selling water in the street.The used clothes for him represented a new social category where he has has gain some some level of honour. honour. Fufilment Lázaro moves up the social ladder just as he wanted.He has an official job as a town criar which offers him good living. He fills all his toils and hardship in the past has paid off with this new status. STYLE Satire During the Golden age the clerics were rumoured to be having affair with their maids but in order to cover it up they married them off to others .Their husbands in turn receive favours from the clerics. Lazaro thus write to show that it really exists but the husbands do not have any option but to deny the affair. Ambiguity The ending of this novel is open because the reader has little knowledge of what happens to lazarillo in the end; whether he was able maintain his currently achieved status or not.” Pues
