ertheless, I would like to question a few points in Devon Francis’ article on Ultra| matic in the June issue [p. 1391. On page 140 he writes: “It (direct drive) gives extra acceleration fast,” while on the ! next page he says: “If you need a sudden burst of acceleration, just push the pedal to the floor. Back you go to torque-converter drive.” Now which does give the most positive acceleration—direct drive or torque I conversion? Another question is how can one acceler­ ate in direct drive between 15 and 56 m .p.h.? Or can one? 1 saw nothing to hold the direct-drive actuating valve when the accelerator was depressed after the momen­ tary release to shift the drive, but on page 142 it says: “This opposing hydraulic pres­ sure . . . gives you a choice between the two drives at any speed between 15 and 56 m .p.h.” II governor pressure couldn’t open Ilie valve before, how can it keep the valve -open if the same governor pressure returns?
