NOTES FOR THE INSTRUCTOR
Introduction This is the fourth of eight volumes in the elementary phase of the American Language Course for foreign student stud ents. s. It is accompanied by 3 0 prerecorded tapes an and d by the Student W Workbook orkbook for Volumes 110 0, 120 0, 0, 1300-1 130 0-1,, an and d 1400.
There is also an Instructor Text for thes thesee boo books ks contai containing ning an outli outline ne of o f major structures and and special notes on the student text and on sounds and intonation. Objectives The object of the instruction outlined in this volume is to continue the development of an ability in the studentt to use the E studen English nglish lan languag guage. e. You will notice tha thatt this student study guide is intended to reinf orce the the vocabulary and structures in American English already introduced, as well as to introduce the student to new new vocabulary and structures with emphasis on pronunciation and aural comprehension. Methods of Presentation Th Thee units contain dialog material and a variety o f dr drills ills and exercises. The conversational dialogs should be be practiced in classroom and language laboratory drill until the students are able to speak the parts of each dialog dialog easily. Students generally learn by doing; therefore, you should concentrate on practices involving the students in in lea learn rnin ing g situations rather than on what you are going to explain to them.
For this reason, explanati explanations ons have bee been n
held to a minimum in this volume. Be sure your stude nts know the homewor k they'are they'a re to do before the they y come come to the the next clas class. s. Care Carefully fully explain the purpose and the pattern of each d drill. rill. A confused confu sed sstudent tudent ofte n pr practices actices errors and wastes time in an unprofitable activity. Prerecorded Tapes Ea Each ch prerecorded tape provides m material aterial for laboratory instructi instruction. on. Each tape is numbered to correspond correspond to the classroom unit it supports. The tapes requ require ire the stude student nt to partici participate pate by recording his voice in a a variety of drills. It is important important that eeach ach student kno w exactly what he is to do in the labo laboratory ratory.. He should also know know all vocab vocabulary ulary items and gram grammatical matical structures. structures. It is also necessary that the st udent have some guided practice practice in pronunciation of new terms so that his practice helps him sharpen his aural comprehension and improve his fluency.

Student Workbook Assignments The Student Workbook for Volumes 1100, 1200, 1300-1, and 1400 contains homework assignments related to the u units nits of this book book.. Not e carefully that some o f the homework is designed as review of m material aterial taught taught in cla class, ss, and that some is designed as prep preparation aration for the classwork to come.
Be sur suree the sstudent tudent understands understands
this. this. Some workbook exerci ses emplo employ y program programming ming techniques and p provide rovide their own answ answers. ers. In doing these, these, the student should cover the answers in the wor workbook kbook with the cardboard w which hich is provided. After h hee has has written his an answer, swer, he should che ck it a against gainst the answ answer er provided in the text for correctness. NO NOTE: TE: The The handwritten answers in the text are not intended as models of good writing for the student to follow; rather they are are intende intended d as “typi cal” cal ” han handwriting dwriting to give the stud student ent practice in reading cursive w writing. riting. It w will ill not no t be be necessary nece ssary for you t o “cor “correct rect ” the st udent ’s answ answers. ers. The stude student nt should do this himself. It may be w wise ise to to go through a few programmed exercises early in the course to be sure the student understands how to do them; then you should merely check whether or not he does the homework.
