Chapter 5 - The chapter depicted the journey of Carlos and his mother throughout different towns to sell beans, harvest mongo, and undertake different forms of livelihood. - It was also here when Carlos realized the cruelty of the middle class. - He also asserted to himself that he will become a doctor, after seeing Irene, her sister, die in front of her at their home. Chapter 6 - Macario met a girl who eventually brought misfortune to him, as he was forced to stop teaching at the local public school because he did not want to marry the girl. - Francisca was about to be born - He knew that marriage would be the end of his family obligations, which would stop the installments for their land - Allos decided to take on another job, harvesting coconuts, which resulted to his injury - Macario was able to teach again but in Mindanao, then eventually contemplated to go the US - Amado after being kicked out of the public market, took on a ship to America. Chapter 7 Chapter 8 Chapter 9 - Allos was able to start fresh in Baguio City where there a great contrast was established between his current and former life - It seemed like he was entering his manhood and leaving all the pain of his childhood - He was able to secure a job as a house help then eventually as a library help - He learned basic English

Chapter 10 - Allos came back to Binalonan - He discovered that his family was not in the best state that he hoped for - He felt he was home again, and everything seemed alright - His family had already moved to Mangusmana, but he eventually needed to go back to Binalonan then to Lingayen, hoping to earn more money in the fishing industry Chapter 11 - In Lingayen, Allos stayed in his cousin’s boarding house and worked with the fisherman who owned it. - He was able to study at a highschool and was able to interact with his English teacher whom he realized as someone who turned his back from his own class and heritage after being educated in the US. - He was able to excel in school and eventually grew popular - He gained importance and relevance to the community he is in, something that he didn’t have before. - He then was advised to get out of Lingayen after being mistakenly part of a premarital birth of a baby - He got perfect credit cards - “I was nearing the dark land of home.” Chapter 12 - As he arrived, he deduced that his brother Luciano already ended his political ambitions and will soon be having two kids - They felt sentimental about their old house as they would never get to live in it again

Allos created a conviction that he will be buying the house again and will furnish it once he has enough money. He felt that losing the house meant losing his family as they are now scattered. He said goodbye to his family as he will be travelling to America

He arrived in Manila and was exposed to the frustrations the city had to offer
