Foreword Have you ever thought about all of the famous two-person teams you may have encountered through the entertainment world? To get you thinking, here are a few that quickly come to mind: Abbot & Costello; Batman & Robin; Lucy & Ricky; Fred & Ethel; Ozzie & Harriet; Laverne & Shirley. How about Simon & Garfunkel; Bert & Ernie; or in the upper Midwest where I live, we often cite Sven & Ole. And that just barely scratches the surface! We could turn to biblical duos and the list would be just as long: Adam & Eve; Cain & Abel; Moses & Aaron; Abraham & Isaac; Jacob & Esau; Joseph & Mary; Mary & Martha. Again, this barely starts what could be a very lengthy list. It seems that adding another person into the mix often adds an interesting dimension as opposed to going solo. Sometimes it is a good thing, sometimes not so good. (See names above.) But when it comes to singing, I’ve always thought that adding another voice enhanced the total experience. I guess that is one of the reasons I have invested a good bit of time over the years in doing several vocal duet collections for Hope Publishing Company. There have been many great hymns and songs to arrange. Crafting these duet arrangements has afforded me the opportunity to partner with a number of duos in my church and across the country by accompanying or singing many of these arrangements in workshop and concert venues. One can quickly surmise that God thought two were better than one as well. Look what was done with Adam and Eve! The sheer number of partnerships that were shaped throughout the Bible seems to underscore the significance of two-person teams. Jesus even talked about the impact two persons in agreement could have with their requests to God. (Mt. 18:19) There is a lot of strength, influence, and potential joy found in such partnerships! So . . . let me encourage you to go and find a singing partner (your own Simon or Garfunkel, Bert or Ernie), grab a couple of these books along with an accompanist, and lift your voices collectively in praise. I believe God will be honored and you will find great joy in the experience!
