Preface This set of eight preludes was first published by Heugel, Paris, in 1859 in two suites of four pieces.* They are marked “for organ” and, written on just two staves, the pieces themselves suggest a small organ or harmonium. Since they don't make use of any pedal notes, they also work very well on the piano and so we've added the set to SOUNDkiosk Piano Edition. Alkan used double bar lines to delineate phrases and, with a few exceptions, appear part way through a bar. In just one bar, bar 5 of prelude 6, the split appears at a different point in the bar in each stave. This notation has been retained from the 1859 edition. Fingering in preludes 2 and 7 is also from this edition. In bar 20 of prelude 8 there is a single stem bearing a two beat G and a one beat C. This appears to be a deliberate, practical notation as the C is played again in the third beat of the bar. The 8 preludes use only the white notes and in terms of the modern keyboard, the 8 modes on which they're based are: Dorian: D to D, with a cadence on D and Hypodorian: A to A, with a cadence on D Phrygian: E to E, with a cadence on E and Hypophrygian: B to B, with a cadence on E Lydian: F to F, with a cadence on F and Hypolydian: C to C, with a cadence on C Mixolydian: G to G, with a cadence on G and Hypomixolydian: D to D, with a cadence on D Jamie Crofts 2012

* Published by Heugel in two sets: H.2982(1) and H.2982(2) Probably part of a Heugel series of sacred organ and choral works (1857 onwards) edited by Joseph d’Ortigue and Louis Niedermeyer. Title: Petits préludes sur les 8 gammes du plain-chant. Composer: C.V. Alkan aîné Top of page: Left – GRANDE MAITRISE and Right – MUSIQUE RELIGIEUSE
