April 29, 2010 RE: Harvard ALI Health Care Reform Think Tank Greetings: I write to invite you to participate in the Harvard University Advanced Leadership Initiative Think Tank on “Health Care Reform” that will take place May 6-8, 2010 at Harvard University. The Advanced Leadership program is designed to prepare experienced leaders to transition from their previous work in the private and public sectors to take on new challenges in the social sector where they potentially can make a significant societal impact. The program seeks to enhance and leverage the skills of already-accomplished leaders for maximum impact on significant social problems, including those that affect health and welfare, children, and the environment. The Think Tank – our name for an innovative solution-finding workshop – is a centerpiece of the Advanced Leadership Initiative, founded in 2009 by Professor Rosabeth Moss Kanter of the Harvard Business School. It serves to enable experienced leaders to fill leadership gaps to support institutions that promote health, education, welfare and the environment. Along with faculty from five professional schools at Harvard, I serve as a co-chair of this program. With the recent passage of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act, the Think Tank on “Health Care Reform” comes at a critical time in our country and globally, as the technological opportunities for improved health, the demand for better and more equitable services, and the ever escalating costs of health, threaten the economic and social stability of nations around the world. We are bringing together an extraordinary group of experts in the field, and our hope is to generate a lively discussion among panelists and the ALI Fellows. We believe that by considering the challenges of health policies and services in the context of both industrialized and developing countries we may better be able to find new ways of achieving the goals of health security, health care quality and health equity for people everywhere. I enclose a preliminary agenda for this Think Tank on “Health Care Reform. The success of the meeting will largely depend on the quality of the discussion. We know you have a great deal to contribute to this discussion and would greatly value your participation in this meeting.
