2 SMALL CELL FOR THE ENTERPRISE 2.1

Overview

An Enterprise Cell is a wireless access point using licensed spectrum delivering improved network reach and increased capacity while offloading traffic from the macro network. Small Cell Access Points, 9366 Small Cell Gateway and Small Cell Management System (SCMS) are included in 9360 Small Cell solution to allow a highly scalable interconnection to the existing UMTS network over the existing standardized 3GPP interfaces. The Enterprise Cell offers legacy support for Circuit Switched Voice and UMTS Packet Data with standard 3G handsets. The solution has been designed for an effective plug & play installation.

2.2

Small Cell Solution architecture

The high level system architecture for small cells as defined by 3GPP is depicted in the diagram in Figure 1.

The 9360 Small Cell solution uses 3GPP interfaces to connect to the existing mobile core network nodes while offering 3GPP compliant air interface. The backhaul connection from the Access Point is IP and an IPsec Tunnel is used to guarantee a secure link. Furthermore, an Iu’ interface is supported between the Access Point and the 9366 Small Cells Gateway (which 9365 is part of) from BCR 3.0. The architecture integrates seamlessly into the operator's existing 3GPP network, including the 3G MSC, SGSN and therefore existing Applications, Portals, Services through standard Iu-CS and Iu-PS interfaces. For more information on the architecture of the solution please refer to [7].

2.3

Enterprise Cell benefits

The Enterprise Cell can be installed in any indoor private places such as business environments or indoor public places (shopping malls, airport…) and can bring a lot of different benefits. If installed in business offices, new sources of revenue from new corporate applications are enabled by the enhanced indoor coverage and corporate networking possibilities. For instance, with the presence location API feature, the users can be connected to the Small Cell Access Points to take advantage of enterprise services. As an example, workers can be always connected to the company anytime, anywhere through a mobile application. They can make and receive their business calls as if they were in their office, thanks to a “One Number” capability. Options such as call history, visual voice mails, corporate directory, call routing are available on this kind of mobile application. Furthermore, an integration within Alcatel-Lucent IP-PBX can also bring benefits such as short-cut dialing, access to My Instant Communicator… If installed in indoor public places, the Enterprise Cell can be deployed in areas formerly covered by microcells or picocells, but can also be used in many more cases, instead of macrocells, since they are very easy to install and are less subject to regulatory constraints with their low emission power. As a result, 10 to 100 Enterprise Cells may be deployed in place of one macrocell. With a high capacity, the Enterprise Cell is ideal for high user density places where additional capacity is required or even in areas where cell phone coverage is needed on short notice. This deployment also allows new innovative applications such as location, Quality of Service (QoS) and trusted security for application development. Enterprise Cells also allow the operator to propose bundled offers and to include an entire group of employees into a single agreement. This leads to reduce churn and to allow higher revenue per user.

2.4

Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Cell

With a fully 3GPP compliant implementation, the Enterprise Cell allows the end user to use the wide range of available 3G devices and applications with higher data rates and, depending on the operator strategy, at lower call costs. The Enterprise Cell uses a flat IP architecture, collapsing the traditional 3G Node B and RNC functions into one. It also uses the same end to end solution as the Home Cell and Metro Cells. It can be deployed in a network supporting a mix of Home, Enterprise and Metro Cells.

Table 4: Frequency bands 3G Network Listening The 3G Network Listening feature allows the Enterprise Cell to act as a UE and receive transmission from neighboring base stations. The feature also allows the Enterprise Cell to automatically identify, measure and record its neighbor UMTS cells, eliminating the need for operator provisioned neighbor cell lists. This information is used by the Enterprise Cell to automatically select its primary scrambling code and power levels to transmit and to create and update a list of UMTS neighbor cells. This neighbor cell list is used by the Enterprise Cell, when in base station mode, for identification of the target cell for UMTS handover and for rebroadcasting of the system information messages, in support of reselection by the UE. 2G Network listening The Enterprise Cell supports a GSM receiver chain and can therefore receive the signal transmitted by the 2G Macro network. The Enterprise Cell can search for and sync to a macro base station, and then decode the BCCH channel. It can then retrieve the relevant information to build and maintain 2G neighbor lists and target cells for IRAT handover and later, when in base station mode, to broadcast to the UE for cell reselection. Measurements and information are provided by the network listening feature to the auto-configuration and self-optimization functions.

Reliability

The MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is calculated based on Telcordia SR-332 Issue 2, September 2006. The MTBF of the 9362 Enterprise Cell V2.2 at 25°C on a stand position is about 60 years (526 Khours). 3.1.10 Security A secure memory is used to authenticate and store sensitive data in the Access Point (i.e. shared secret for authentication). From BCR 3.0, the V2.2 Enterprise can also support digital certificate instead of this mechanism. However, once the authentication method is configured in the product (either shared secret or digital certificate) then there is no way to change it anymore. As an option, forced opening of the casing causes permanent disablement of the unit. In this case, repair process is not available as irreversible damage is caused to the printed circuit board and a new one must be provided. 3.1.11 Status indicators Four LEDs provide indication for power status, internet, service, use as shown in the table 6 below. A status button is also present. Its purpose is to turn On/Off all the LEDs (except the Power LED and the LEDs on the RJ45 ports).
